Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

RC, is PAG now open to all journalists for evaluation of the 991 turbo? I can see they are inviting a few selected ones to their home track for testing...

When do you think the US magazines like R&T and C&D will make their reviews? While 0-60 mph is not what matters to most, I suspect the turbo non-s will hit 2.6 seg and the Turbo S 2.5 or even 2.4 ..... The 997 turbo S hit 2.6 according R&T I dont see why not the new Turbo non-S hit the same mark with almost identical HP and a better PDK architecture that the S it replaces.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

here is my judgement until i drive one (in 3 weeks time): very fast, technologically very accomplished, ugly duckling-styling (form follows function? not sure.......) and uninspiring. it is probably the best sportscar, but  certainly not a supercar. why? well, a supercar is neither defined by speed nor practicality (nobody NEEDS a supercar) but by emotions and desirability. unfortunately herr achleitner forgot to program that into the turbo. this concept works well for the carrera models, which are much more prone to rational buying decisions, but IMHO it fails for the much more expensive turbos. herr preuninger did a much better job in this respect, the GT3 is super-desirable, even by supercar standards.  the turbos are just scaled down panameras which in turn are height-trimmed and stretched cayennes. in fact, the turbo S has the same desirablility factor as the cayenne turbo (is there an S?).

the reviews so far: mostly total crab, they are just stunned by speed and acceleration. no info on turbo lag, sound, overall feeling etc.

Opinions are like as****s,everybody has one.

Your opinions, fortunately, are just that,"yours" and totally irrelevant to the majority of folks who make the market for the 911 Turbo.

Fabulous car, great job from Porsche and definitely a car worth the "hypercar" moniker, better then your average "supercar" built (and used mostly) for posing and slow cruising in St Tropez. Smiley

By looking at some vids, I have the feeling that the Turbo has a sports exhaust fitted as standard and the valves are opened on startup and when you hit the sports button.......

Or the turbo comes with a mute button instead of the actual exhaust button Smiley

Ouch! Reading between the lines other than its substantial power characteristics the 991TTS doesn't provide a better driving experience than a Cayman but at three times the cost.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

The exhaust note on the Italian review sounds great, equal or better than the one in 991C2S in my opinion. You can also hear the sound symposer doing its work. Clear boxer sound ! Smiley

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

This part of Pistonheads review kills any enthusiasm for me:

"The electrically assisted steering doesn't offer any true feel. It's crisper than a standard Carrera's and, thanks to specific calibration work and the rear-wheel steering, it feels more responsive, but still numb, as is the brake pedal."

I would not take any UK and USA based review seriously lately.

Only sportscars that gets good review from these sources are: manual gearbox and hydraulic servo steering based sportscars.

Excellent reviews from same USA/UK based mags and webzines are expected when someone produce non ESP, non servo brakes, non servo steering sportcars again... That sportscar will have awsome FEEL...SmileySmiley

I'm sorry, but I must have seen another video. I found the sound in the italian video completely disappointing. That thing has no sound at all. Unbelievable.

    Very true.

None of these scribes represent the real buyers for these cars, they get these things for just a few hours of "testing" and they are looking for maximum entertainment and excitement in that short time, even if it requires unnecessary effort and sweat.

They are bored, since 90% of cars they usually test (and own) are compact and subcompact boredom/commuter appliances. The only worthy reviews come from journalists who also put their $$ where their mouths are, folks like Metcalfe or Harris for example.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Sounds quite good to me from inside:

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Guys, from the inside, the new Turbo S sounds MUCH better than the old one, it actually has a sporty "hauling" sound, which gets very nice over 4500 rpm. This sound is actually more muted in the regular Turbo.

From the outside, the (whoosh) sound is the same but louder and more intensive.

The steering is 10% more direct than in the GT3, so now you know what I think about those reviews...

Looks like about 18s 200 to 298kph so even allowing for speedo errors sub 30s 0-300kph looks very possible - impressive Smiley

Correcting for speedometer accurancy I would estimate something like 34s for 0-300kph. (Real 300kph should be like 315 on the speedo, 298-315 on the speedo would be at least 6s, i.e. 18+6=24s for 200-300kph.)

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

New speedos are more accurate MKSGR. I don't think the difference will be that big, maybe 3 seconds but not 6.
