"If Cinderella were a car, her name would be Cayman. Cayman isn't tasked with scrubbing floors and toilets around Stuttgart and forbidden to attend royal balls, but she is destined to forever live in the cold shadow of her elder sibling: 911 Carrera. Frankly, we're tired of Porsche pretending to throw us a bone with an inferior (yet still pretty good) substitute that is the Cayman R. We demand an uncompromised effort, the sum of Porsche's greatest parts, which would culminate in the Cayman GT3 RS.

A direct-injected 475-hp, 3.8-liter flat-6 fitted with forged pistons and titanium connecting rods is centrally mounted and paired with the latest-generation seven-speed PDK. Its carbon-skinned aluminum unibody weighs no more than 2,800 pounds. All the usual high-tech goodies like dynamic engine mounts and Porsche torque vectoring are included, as are forged aluminum center-lock wheels wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup rubber. The 911's track record speaks for itself, but it's standing in the way of a more proficient platform starving for power.

Porsche, we dare you to prove us wrong."

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Cayman (2012)

It's not so much the Nuburgring that's the problem, modern cars are deliberately high geared to achieve the improvements in the stupid and irrelevant EU fuel consumption numbers. Great in a Skoda not so clever in sports cars.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Cayman (2012)

The 997 Carrera S is geared just about to be acceptable in G7 at above 130 km/h. Below that the engine is totally empty. Indicated 130 km/h (allowing for speedo error)  is the speed limit in most countries. Of course the driver could select Sport + that goes up to G6 only and drive with a more full engine and consume more fuel in the process.

For speed limit obsessed drivers/territories I have found that the 991 3.4 is more satisfying than the 991 3.8 in this respect. But who would pass by the S model just to feel better going slower?

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Cayman (2012)

You can wait for Porsche to see the light, or you can simply buy a Cayman S.

I wonder how history would have played out if Porsche, in the early 70's, had gone with a mid-engine design to replace the 911, instead of the front-engine 928 (transaxle and 50-50 weight distribution not withstanding; and I am a 928 fan). Perhaps Porsche traditionalists at the time would have embraced it, and we'd all be happily driving modern designs today.

Could you elaborate a bit more on what it is exactly that makes you say that the base 3.4 was more "satisfying" than the S 3.8 in the 991?

    many thanks

    Sorry frown

What I meant is that if someone is not using the full performance of the 991 S (due to speed limits or attitude) the 3.4 may be a better buy. When going slower like in the 130-180 km/h range the smaller engine is more eager to rev and it feels more "full", responsive and pleasing. The larger engine comes alive after those speeds and when going relatively slow it is little frustrating.

The 3.4 I drove was as fast as the 997.2 S and therefore still very fast (no scientific measurements but observing the speed attained at certain points on the route which I know very well) but the engine was more high revving and more alive all the time.

The S is worth it if you have the chance to utilize all its potential.

I suppose it is the old adage"driving a slower car fast is more fun than driving a faster car slow".

    Thanks.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Cayman (2012)

I drove a 991 (non S) PDK and a 981S PDK. I felt perfectly happy with the 991, enough power and great sound even without PSE. I'm a big Boxster fan, but felt the 981S could use a bit more power. But maybe that was because it was brand new, less than 3k km.  On paper the difference should be not as much? yes

    Did you drive a 981 Boxster S or a 981 Cayman S? Just clarifying,..
