    Daytime running lights

Has anyone programmed the daytime running lights to be on? Are they the headlights or foglights? I don't have SCP and may ask the dealer to do it for me. TIA.

    Re: Daytime running lights

It's customary in Canada I believe so it is doable on the 997. Dealers should be able to do in quickly.

    Re: Daytime running lights

I know the dealer can and must do it because I don't have SCP... Can anyone tell me which lights they are?

    Re: Daytime running lights

    Headlights dimmed.

    Re: Daytime running lights

Actually, at least on a car with Sports Chrono Package, both the headlights and the taillights work--not sure but I also think even the side markers are lit too, when you enable daytime running lights.

The differences between running with the daytime running lights vs. turning on your lights at the switch are two--on day time running light settings, the instrument panel isn't lit and you don't have high beams on the headlights. I presume that when a dealer enables daytime running lights using the PST 2 tester, you'd get the same functionality, but who knows

I have the daytime running lights activated through the Sports Chrono package on my Club Coupe--the extra visibility couldn't hurt

    Re: Daytime running lights

Paul, does the car have its down dedicated daytime running lights like those in a Lexus?

    Re: Daytime running lights

I've enabled the DRL using the Sport Chrono function in the PCM and it looks like with DRL all the lights come on except the interior lights and high beam isn't available (but flash to pass is). No separate DRL like some other cars have.

    Re: Daytime running lights

I wonder what enabling the DRL will do to the life expectancy of the bi-xenon lights?

One way of looking at that would be that, if you got creamed by a semi-trailer unit in low-light conditions because you didn't program in the the DRL and forgot to switch on your lights manually, then you would no longer worry about the life expectancy of your bi-xenon light units.

What life expectency matters? The point is lengthening YOUR life expectency with drl's. If you buy that, a little less bi-xenon life is a small price.

    Re: Daytime running lights

DRL also runs the headlights at less than full power

    Re: Daytime running lights

In that case, DRL it is...when my car finally gets here.

    Re: Daytime running lights

DRL's in canada are always on (regulation) and they are at the same intensity as the regular lights. This is unlike most cars, which have a dimmer setting for daytime.

    Re: Daytime running lights

Thanks. Normally, I'd just jump the lead for the fog lights to be on w/ ignition but I'm afraid to touch anything on this car.

The manual says DRL's run at "dim" but I think their definition of "dim" is low beams. I set up to have DRL using the Sport Chrono option and DRL and low beams are exactly the same.

    Re: Daytime running lights

After reading this post, I decided to set the DRL on - I think it's a reaonable safety thing to do.
I agree with jhbrennan about the power thing - with the DRL on, there appears to be NO change in intensity when I turn the headlights on manually.

    Re: Daytime running lights

I had auto DRL on a previous car and it usually seemed that my lights were on when most others weren't. (ala Volvo!)

What's wrong with turning on your lights when it starts to get dark or in poor weather conditions?

    There's nothing wrong with that.

    Re: Daytime running lights

I used to have DRL on, but often forgot to turn the rest of the lights on when it gets dark. Ended up, I would drive in the evening with the DRL on and without the tail lights on. No very safe in the dark. I wonder why P-car does not have automatic headlight like BMW or Lexus?

Interesting that with P-car DRL the only lights not on are the interior dash lights - with DRL activated the headlights, side lamps and rear lamps are all on.

My 997S does have automatic lights, the same as my BMW.

I just checked my car and the owner's manual page 131 still can not figure out how to set automatic lights. Can you enlighten me?

Hw must be talking about the "Welcome Home" function - this isn't the same as automatic lights. As far as I know no auto on/off function exists - no light sensor to take care of this.

Daytime running lights can be set through the PCM (but only if you have the Sport Chrono Plus as far as I know). Hit "set" on the main menu and there you will find some sub menus. On of them contains the according setting. Once you've set it, the lights will always be on (but not the interior lighting).
