2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

Back to back race weekends, after the chaos at Silverstone caused by Pirelli's tyres, it will be interesting to see if we see the same things happening again. It's a very different track, so perhaps the problem will be less acute.

The title race is certainly interesting with Alonso, Hamilton and Raikkonen in particular scoring points when Vettel couldn't.

Will Mercedes be able to continue its improvement in race pace? Is tyre degradation really less of an issue for them?

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

all depends on the weather I guess - looks like it's hot here in CH - so if they will have 27+ I am sure we will see more tire's burst unless they now all avoid curbs as much as they can....- Pirelli is a really bad tire....a guy close to the F1 circuit told me that "they couldn't build a better even if they tried...." being quite harsh..... I hope they will fix this in Budapest latest.....no change possible for this week-end though...

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

Hungaroring eats tires fast and you need to use the kerbs... adding the Pirelli tire creates a dangerous mix... I really hope nobody will get hurt...

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

The tires were purposefully made to not last, FIA thinks that would promote passing as their regulations have turned F1 into NASCAR racing, every car is pretty much the same as everyone else. And if there isn't DRS, there would be no passing at all.

Losen the rules and F1 would be more exciting.

Good decision...because if you were to use them, and if they would then blow up Pirelli would say that the condom was not well mounted :-D

Pirelli has blamed the way the Formula One teams used its tyres as the main cause of the blow outs it experienced at the British Grand Prix, citing tyres mounted the wrong way round

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

Actually they claim that some teams have put left to right and also didn't use enough pressure......but what bothers me is that they seem to life by "attack is the best defense" - instead of claiming like they have been told to build it fragile - which was very obviously the wrong way.  Now for Germany they seem to replace the shoulder already to Kevlar instead of steel - so I hope it's already over.....

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

I wonder whether all those issues with the F1 tyres are not detrimental to the Pirelli image attributes ? Recently any time you mention the tires a somehow negative connotation arises. I think it does not do good to Pirelli but this is just a personal observation.

Not like they had any to begin with. Most people consider the PZeros to be vastly inferior to the Michelin PS2/PSS.

I think if Porsche customers could custom-choose their tires for the ordered cars, they would go with Michelin most of the time. I always had issues with Pirelli tires, on my 996 Turbo, the tires had "cracks" in the sidewalls and only after I really wrote an angry letter to Porsche, Pirelli sent over an engineer and I got replacements. Even now I wonder how I could have been so stupid to actually drive that car with the "cracked" sidewalls.

Also, on my 997 Carrera GTS Cab, I drove through a curve at a moderate speed and suddenly the rear of the car came strongly (heavy oversteer) without any warning. I drove back to see if there was some oil or anything but nothing. Tire pressure was OK too, pretty weird.

Sorry, I don't like Pirelli tires, maybe it is a "head" thing but even the Michelin on my Cayenne GTS felt better. Didn't have much issues with the PZero on my Panamera Turbo S but I hope (and pray) that my 991 Turbo S will be delivered with Michelin tires.

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

I've never tried Pirelli on the 911, but on the Boxsters both 986 and 987 the Italian brand was deficient in two ways. The wear rate was very bad (8.000km the rears) and the driving characteristics of the tyres deteriorated very soon after.

The Michelin are the best in many areas except the channeling of standing water an area which I find the Bridgestone Potenza N1 very efficient. Our highways hold a lot of standing water because when it rains (not as often as elsewhere) it is frequently in the form of almost a tempest. Other wide tyres on sportscars are quite useless and dangerous.

I also rate the Bridgestones highly in terms of handling, roadholding, noise, wear. However, the sidewalls are stiffer than the Michelin's and this gives a bouncy feel on continuous bumps.

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

I am 100% with RC here - I've tried them just on a SUV and brought my car to the dealer saying I think something is wrong with the front differential - making these sounds - and they said the Pirelli's don't fit for this car making terrible noise and despite good alignment and correct pressure -  I have much more wear on the inside than outside..... - I never had that with Contis or Michelin's.... - I've decided actually now to only buy Michelin for my cars - must be psychological... indecision

Re: 2013 German F1 Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring

Oh, forgot to mention...Pirelli Scorpion Winter...worst winter tires I had ever (955 Cayenne), breaking distance was insanely long on snow/ice, stability a catastrophe . Since at that time, this was the only N-rated 19'' winter tire available for the Cayenne, I did something I never usually do: I got a non-N rated Nokian winter tire for the Cayenne and while the tire sucked on dry pavement (I really had to be careful in curves, the sidewalls weren't stiff enough for the weight of the Cayenne and the tire felt very "soft"), it proved to be a wonderful tire on snow and ice (very short braking distances and good stability in curves). Now I have a Dunlop M3(?) winter sport tire on my Cayenne, highly recommended, amazing winter tire.

No thanks, no Pirelli for me anymore.

A non-N rated tire, really?  Leawood911 must not be reading Rennteam yet today.

I also have Dunlops as winter for my Turbo S, one of the best winters I have used, it's so good, I had order another set for my Audi.  It's also on our family van also.

I will also recommend the Bridgestone as one of the best all around summer tire. It may not have the ultimate grip of the Mchelins, but the Bridgestone are out of this world in the rain. Night and day over the Michelins.

Did anyone notice the crash on the Nordschleife during P3?  The cameras panned onto it (with another vehicle approaching it) - not sure if it had just happened but it would appear so as it was ssideways across the road.  Looked pretty battered although it was in one piece...

    This is getting ridiculous :)

Watching the race on TV, driver tracker on my iPhone, lap times on my iPad, helmet cam on another iPad, Wimbledon Men's Final on my Mac, Tour de France on my wife's Mac ... I feel drunk with sport :)

    But there's a problem ... I don't have enough eyes and ears ....
