This is why I love my Cayenne GTS

Yesterday, around 6 pm, a huge thunderstorm hit our region.

I was on my way home, most of the streets were closed due to high water levels and/or trees and other stuff lying around on the streets, making it almost impossible to drive.

My wife called me in the car to tell me that we had water in the cellar and that hell had broken loose, the house was damaged (roof) and the word was out, that a tornado (no kidding) had hit us.

Driving home was a challenge and shortly before I reached my house, all streets were completely blocked by huge trees lying there. My wife called again, she was desperate, she couldn't reach the fire department and the police told her that they cannot help because it was crazy because of a general disaster alert and and the highest security level (police was only supposed to patrol the area, everything else was left to the fire department and THW...something like FEMA in the US).

So I did the craziest thing, I drove on a pedestrain walk, then over some smaller tree branches and then a steep greenfield up a hill until I reached my house. I put the air suspension on the highest level and everything worked perfect, even in higher water (almost up to the exhaust pipes).

Sorry, these are the only photos I have, taken in a rush with my iPhone but believe me, the other photos would have been spectacular, I cannot believe what I did with the Cayenne, absolutely amazing car.

Without it, my wife with the kids would have been alone for at least another hour and the mess at home would have been much bigger. When I arrived, we started to remove the water from the cellar and to save everything we can, it was a five hour work but we did it. Today, we did the damage assessment and it will be at least 15-20 k EUR, maybe more. Thanks god the insurance already agreed to pay, I sent them the photos but I was really lucky to have the Cayenne yesterday. Many cars were stranded in the water, the engine went off.

That said, I think there will be always a Cayenne in the family...fantastic family AND emergency vehicle. Smiley

Best news is you and your family is ok. Everything else is just secondary.

We always knew the Cayenne is quite a capable off roader, just that no owners would take it off road. You just proved Porsche made the right decision is keeping the off road capability of the Cayenne.

Re: This is why I love my Cayenne GTS

Thankfully no one was hurt... Best of luck with the cleanup and dealing with insurance. We got hit by Sandy hurricane and 7 months later are still back to where we were after $100k of damages...

Re: This is why I love my Cayenne GTS

Thanks, guys. Sorry to hear about the insurance issues but luckily, I sent over the photos and the insurance already acknowledged the damage and allowed me to hire people to clean up the mess. They pay in full. I have lots of insurance contracts (incl. cars, business, etc.) with the same insurance company, so they are usually quite easy on the money when it comes to damage. Never had issues with them (Allianz).

Yes, it is unbelievable that even the quite sporty GTS is that good under such extreme driving conditions and this is why I highly recommend the air suspension. Never ever get a Cayenne without it, it basically allows things which you wouldn't think possible with such a car. I was just a little bit worried about the 21 rims (low profile tires) but luckily, they weren't damaged, not even a bit.

Great truck, I love it.  kiss

Wow, RC that is such a crazy story! I can only imagine how much you love the GTS right now. That is like the perfect car, and this time it literally saved you your furniture etc.. not to mention you were able to support your family. God knows what could have happened. That was a major storm, the pictures look horrifying.

Proper use of a good car in unfortunate circumstances...

Re: This is why I love my Cayenne GTS

I am very happy for you that there were only material damages and those all covered by insurance.

Your epic run to your wife and kids is a proof of a good family man kiss smiley

I noticed the "Apotheke " sign in your first picture, it must be your business, I presume

If someone can afford a good Cayenne model, he has himself covered on all grounds, practicality, comfort and speed. Way too expensive for me to own a V8 and a 911. Therefore, I preferred the sportscar and an affordable SUV.

Have said it before, between a Cayenne and a Panamera, the Cayenne wins. They are equally comfortable, and pretty much as fun to drive. Bonus: the Cayenne is cheaper, carries 5 people and their luggages and can be driven in the snow and is safer (higher driving position and more safe in a crash).

The Panamera should drive almost like a 911. But it is closer to a Cayenne. Sad.

Yes, the Cayenne is the better choice as a family car or daily driver but the Panamera has a more dynamic drive feel (GTS and Turbo/Turbo S) due to the slightly lower weight and different setup.

I learned my lesson...Cayenne GTS or Turbo/S & 991 Turbo/Turbo S or GT3 are the best combo for a family man. Lesson learned, the hard (expensive) way. Actually the Cayenne GTS and the 991 Turbo S is the perfect combo since you get something from both worlds (N/A engine with superb sound and amazing chassis for a SUV plus the turbo charged monster 991 Turbo S). I can also imagine that a Cayenne GTS & 991 GT3 combo would be perfect to some.

The Panamera should be only a choice if the 991 & Cayenne combo is too expensive and/or it needs to be one car only. As a family car, the Panamera failed miserably though. The luggage room is not acceptable.

Good to hear that you and your family are ok after the storm, that is indeed the most important thing. The Cayenne being such a good car in such situations is amazing. you definitely made the right choice.

Re: This is why I love my Cayenne GTS

This would be my ideal stable for now:

Diesel hybrid Range Rover Sport (daily driver and 7 seater, if it ever comes to the US)

Mini Cooper S convertible manual (fun low key daily driver MY07)

Ferrari 612 manual (fun exotic sporty family sedan MY05)

Ferrari California (wife fun daily driver MY09)

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster Sport Shift (with performance pack and loud exhaust, fun ride, the car is just too beautiful and exotic to get rid off MY08)

Cayenne TTS (my current old gen is fine for now MY09) or new Cayenne GTS or Tesla Model X

Last for a real blast would be a Porsche Singer. Can't get it out of my head. I could not deal with a true very old car as lovely as the idea sounds.
