Yeah... the tattoos kinda spoil it all - why do people do that...?
Because tons of doctors are waiting to remove them for big money.
On a more serious note: I don't get it either. Especially body aware people (body shapers, body builders, etc.) seem to destroy their looks with tattoos, some of them looking hideous (like the colored ones on this woman), others just plain horrible but I guess it has something to do with education, personal goals and self esteem.
From my experience, especially here in Germany, people with a lower social standard usually have tattoos. They can barely pay their rent or are without a job but they pay thousands for tattoos. Me and my wife deal a lot with tattooed people because of our jobs and I can't say I'm not happy about that (infections, removal, etc.).
One thing is for sure: Those with good jobs (and/or a family with kids) later on usually regret having tattoos and they want them to be removed. Not always an easy, cheap or possible task.
I know that in the US, tattoos seem to be more normal (I see maybe one tattoo on 100 people over here in Germany but probably a rate of 20-30% in the US) but most of the time, they look horrible. Especially beautiful women with tattoos look hideous and just wait until that skin isn't that nice and shiny anymore but wrinkled.

The problem with tattoos, I find, only certain kind of people have the urge or even time to spent thinking about getting one. I must say i've never woken up thinking, hey i'd like a tattoo. On the other hand, people that do get inked I find always keep going. Had one cute girl in high school, she got one star on her wrist because she thought it was cool. Years later, her arms face and back are entirely covered

You'd be surprised to learned that many of these people actually think that they are special by doing that.
Are you surprised? Well...with many VIPs having tattoos and ink reality shows, this comes at no surprise to me. People want to mimic their idols and I'm afraid the time when idols were politicians, scientists or other important people, has long gone. Nowadays the new idols are reality show stars.
Speaking of tattoos: I recently met an English couple with their two kids in Florida. The woman had the faces and names of her small kids tattooed to her left and right shoulder. The guy had the name and face of his wife or girlfriend tattooed to his chest. You can't even imagine how stupid that looked, even if well intended.

Probably helps to keep him faithful..

I have no tattoos and not planning to do any, but they only tattoo I would consider is the names of my two children. That's something never will change.. guess I should do a DNA test first

What's the deal, it's a pretty girl, the fact that she likes tattoos doesn't change that fact imo. To each his own...
Have you ever seen women in their 40s/50s with "old" tattoos? Hold your vomit bag ready...
This has something to do with intelligence, like taking drugs, getting tattoos is a choice...a choice someone should really think very very good about it before doing it. The consequences are not immediately obvious (like with drugs) but from our (me, wife and doctor friends) experience, the whining starts after a couple of years and especially in the case of women, it can be very very psychotic. Especially if these women are very body/beauty conscious.

Too late...
I agree...no problem with private parts but unfortunately even there, the aging process doesn't stop.

And not only because my wife has one ( yes she is american...)
Unless she was in the Army/Navy...I'm not so sure it has a different meaning in the US.

A good doctor friend of ours actually makes his money with tattoo removal, which got very sophisticated since lasers are involved. Almost every weekend, he spends at a specialized facility to train and learn about new laser techniques, very impressive. His equipment alone is worth over 150k EUR. He actually views himself as an artist who corrects the work of other artists. Interesting philosophy.
