    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

There are ancient exceptions, but the Porsche pricing philosophy in recent years has been to price their product lines somewhere between the massed produced sport cars and high end sport cars. They characterized their models as performance value. Lately they have been losing that designation with the cheaper competitors out performing them.

For the Porsche 960 to be a success, it will clearly need to have PerformanceStyling and Pricing that are competitive with the prevailing marques in the sector...

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

Well it needs to be competitive with what Ferrari , Mclaren and company will be offering 4-5 years down the road.  Comparing the theoretical specs of a project (960) to real cars of today (458, MP4 etc)  is I guess pure marketing. Said that I am very much looking forward to it.

    Boxster Coupe GTS:

    THE FLAT EIGHT

Porsche favours a new flat-eight engine for the 960. A development of the trademark six-cylinder boxer, the quad-turbo 3.9 is mounted low down in the spaceframe chassis and features a central take-off which connects to a seven-speed PDK ‘box. CAR understands that VW boss Ferdinand Piech is already running a stealth Cayman fitted with a 4.0-litre B8 prototype. This engine supersedes earlier plans for a 4.8 V8 or 911-related flat six.

I'm interested in what people think of this new rumour... IMO it is not likely that Porsche would need to develop an entirely new engine architecture when they have a V-8 that would serve the purpose.   Flat 8 engines would be more difficult to fit into a mid-engine frame as far as I see, though it would give slightly lower centre of gravity.  On the other hand Ferrari did cram a flat-12 into the Berlinetta Boxer in the 80's.   Smiley

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

It's not a new engine architecture.  The 9A1 is modular so the future Flat-4 in the 981 and the Flat-8 are both built on the current Flat-6 platform with more or fewer cylinders...

Although Ferrari did put flat 12 into Berlinetta Boxer, it was rubbish as the engine sat on top of the rear axle making the center of gravity too high.  I think the flat 8 on the 961 will be cool, but hope they employ GT3 style engine mount and reduce the vibration.

My question is why? They have the Panamera turbo which is pretty competitive. Have they decided not to build a 458 competitor?

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

A speculative article about the Porsche 960...

"Porsche supercar switching Ferrari target from 458 to F12"

    (15 February 2013)

A new Porsche supercar that would sit between the iconic 911 and upcoming 918 Spyder will switch its sights from the Ferrari 458 to the Ferrari F12 if it goes into production, according to company sources.

Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has previously stated the German car maker is considering a new supercar model to rival the V8-powered 458.

A Porsche insider told CarAdvice at the international launch of the new Cayman, however, that the new Porsche 911 Turbo due later this year would have sufficient performance to match the 458 Italia.

“We are still thinking of a car between 911 and [upcoming] 918, but I think with the 458 we can fight against that with the next 911 Turbo, that’s no problem.

“It’s the same power level. But there will be more a car that can fight against the [Ferrari] F12.”

The F12 is the fastest car ever produced by Ferrari and is powered by a 6.3-litre V12 with 544kW and 690Nm.

If the Porsche supercar gets the green light, it’s unlikely to go into production before 2017 our source indicated.

    918-RSR_side-view.jpg

The model, rumoured to be codenamed 960, would be built in much larger numbers than the Porsche 918 Spyder that will make its production debut at September’s 2013 Frankfurt motor show before hitting the assembly line in October.

Porsche is building just 918 units of the hybrid 918 that will be left-hand-drive only but from a combination of V8 engine and electric motors to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3 seconds yet use just 3.0 litres of fuel every 100km.

The Porsche insider says the 918 would be considered more of a successor to the company’s famous blockbuster supercars, the 959 and Carrera GT, rather than the F12 fighter.

“[The F12 fighter] could be something like this [a successor to 959], but normally we would say the 959 and Carrera GT are the predecessors of the 918, because they showed the latest technology. And that’s the same for the 918.”

Both our source and a Porsche engine development teamleader, Dr Martin Constien, have dismissed rumours of an eight-cylinder horizontally opposed – ‘boxer’ – engine for the new supercar.

To match the V12-powered Ferrari F12, it’s likely Porsche would borrow an engine from the group stable – a V8 or V10 boosted by two or more turbochargers.

The Porsche insider insists the supercar would be a pure Porsche despite rumours the model would be based on the platform of the next-generation Audi R8.

“If we build the car over 911 it will be a new model line, just like the Macan.

“We are integrated in the Volkswagen Group but I think we will [continue to] build our own cars. There is a share of some parts and some experience, so on, but you will see this [example of Porsche being a Porsche] when we enter Le Mans next year.

“This [race car] will not be an Audi [Le Mans car] with a Porsche shape. It’s a real Porsche.”

Hopes of a baby Porsche sports car to sit under the Boxster seem to have all but vanished, with the company going cold on the plan.

    They already have a 458 competitor...the 997 Turbo S or the 997 GT2 RS for that matter.

The new 991 Turbo will be the competitor of the revamped 458.

The Panamera Turbo is a sedan, which can't compete with the F12 (wouldn't make sense, class wise and performance wise).

I also hate these photoshop jobs, they are horrible and completely wrong.

It doesn't make sense for Porsche to develop a Panamera Coupe based on the current Panamera generation, even if some of the development is rumored to have happened already. My personal guess is that the Panamera Coupe (or whatever the name will be) is coming with the next generation and I'm not even sure it will be based on the Panamera.

I hope the 960 would be really stylish and emotional to drive to compete with Ferrari.  I mean even more stylish than the 918.

This is the FeFi after all.

When do you think we can start to see the test mules running around?
