    Re: 991 RSR

Could it be that Porsche still has new RSR DFI engine in development and decided to use current RSR engine for next year's testing program?  Perhaps they don't want to show all their cards at once.  It seems a DFI  motor is being developed for 991 GT3 car scheduled for launch late next year.

Possibly, but another possibility is that Porsche see the 991 as the interim GTE product until they are able to offer a mid-engined V8 that will be able to compete with the Ferrari product. Who knows, but I can tell you that unless the 991 gets some serious performance breaks from the ACO (not the way Porsche should go racing) , they are going to be left in the dust by the Ferrari’s, Corvettes, etc.

    I am deeply dissapointed.

How can we talk about car speed that haven't already raced. I am quite sure that it will be very competitive car, otherwise porsche wouldn't merge their factory team with Olaf Manthey.

    Re: 991 RSR

The engine is the same (if the rumors are true). That means any performance gains will come from chassis/suspension. No matter how good the chassis is, it will still be a rear engine car that will have some advantages (example in the wet,& slow corner exit) but will be less competitive in the fast corners.

The engine is not DFI and has shown itself to be at a disadvantage with regards to fuel consumption in relation to the 458's.

Given the above, I expect the car to be quicker than the 997 based model, but the question is will it be able to compete (without performance breaks) against the Ferrari’s and other V8'. I have serious doubts. (i sincerely hope that I’m wrong).

Porsche are running the cars essentially to prepare the team for the LMP1 project.

    Re: 991 RSR

Since Ferrari is already hampered down with -5L tanks, the fuel consumption won't be much of an issue, but I am kinda woried that a brand spanking new porshce racer gets the same engine BoP as the BMW, cause I'm guessing porsche will be gunning for the same breaks on the basics that it's the same engine...

Ultimatly we will only know for sure in april, or when they debut..It would be sad if what I described above happened, since 2013 will be the last year of GTE racing in the format we know it, from 2014 a more GT3esce approach is expected...Also very sad there won't be any Porsche presence in the ALMS..

    Re: 991 RSR

As you know, the Porsche's were doing shorter stints than the Ferrari's (even with the smaller fuel tanks).

Going racing depending on perfomance breaks is just unecceptable for a company with the kind of racing and engineering tradition of Porsche.

Lets hope I am wrong and that Porsche can offer a product that will take on your Ferrari's mojelme, in a fair and constructive way.kiss

Don't care. I feel the same way. I wanted a 997 with the 1st Gen RSR Body and slashcut rear exhaust.

I agree we should cherish the tradition, but it's time to move on and be more competitive. The only reason I could see is they don't want to invest too much. Let's see. I would like to be proven wrong...

I don't think that it is an invest problem. Porsche invests great amount of money on new facilities + bought Nardo, creates 918 which without doubt is very expensive in development. I think I would not be wrong if I would say that it is much more expensive project than Mclarens P1 and Ferraris F70. Just compare amount of testing.

I think that... firstly, at this moment they just want to differentiate GT3 and GT3RS, secondly - new engine is under development and they just have no time to introduce it in 2013 but they want to prepare a new car in terms of balance and aero for future clients. Maybe in 2 years we could see DFI one. Or maybe, because of regulation changing in 2014 they just don't see the sense for preparing a new engine for old regulations.

Wolfgang Hatz -- "I know where the photos were taken and I don't know how they did it. We want to participate next year [the next day Manthey were announced as running factory 991 RSRs at Le Mans 2013] and, yes, the RSR and Cup will use the old engine. It is very reliable and strong and it does a good job and in the Cup it will be 3.8 litres. It was an easy decision."

    Re: 991 RSR

I don't understand the confusion: The Porsche motorsport gear box always has clutch

    Here are the specs:

    • Porsche 6-speed sequential dog gearbox with active oil cooling and internal pressurized oil lubrication system
    • Gear ratios:
      Drop Gear 25/32 1,280
      CW & P 09/26 2,889
      1st gear 13/41 i = 3,154
      2nd gear 17/39 i = 2,294
      3rd gear 20/37 i = 1,850
      4th gear 23/35 i = 1,522
      5th gear 22/28 i = 1,273
      6th gear 31/34 i = 0,931
    • Limited slip differential 37% drive / 52% overrun
    • Single mass flywheel
    • Race clutch (5½" triple plate carbon clutch)
    • Hydraulic release bearing
    • Oil-water heat exchanger
    • Rear wheel drive
    • Paddleshift-System

It has nothing to do with PDK that does not have a clutch.

    Re: 991 RSR

The point is that with the 991 GT3 Cup and 991 GT3 RSR based on the Porsche Motorsport GT1-derived "Mezger" flat-six, along with the latest sequential racing gearbox, the concerns of existing GT3 customers around a 9A1 engine with a PDK "two-pedal" gearbox may be somewhat mitigated... Smiley

    2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup officially unveiled...

    Porsche-911-GT3-Cup.jpg

Porsche has officially unveiled the 2013 911 GT3 Cup at the company's "Night of Champions” celebration.

Stuttgart. The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is the most successful race car in the world. Since 1998, 2,395 units of the near standard vehicle for customer sport were produced. The new edition of the 911 GT3 Cup is the motorsports version of the future 911 GT3 and as such is the first race car that is based on the seventh generation of the sports car icon from Zuffenhausen. The 911 GT3 Cup will be run exclusively in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in 2013. The car for one-make racing made its debut on the occasion of the end of motorsport season “Night of Champions” celebration at the R&D Centre in Weissach.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is powered by a 3.8-litre six-cylinder flat engine. It generates 460 hp (338 kW) at 7,500 revs, surpassing the predecessor by 10 hp. A six-speed dog-type gearbox developed by Porsche Motorsport which is operated via shift paddles at the steering wheel for the first time in a Porsche brand trophy race car transmits the power to the rear axle. The single piece race wheels with centre mount were also newly designed by Porsche Motorsport. The width of the Michelin race slicks was increased by two centimetres to 27 centimetres at the front and by ten millimetres at the rear axle to now measure 31 centimetres.

A newly developed race braking system further improves the excellent endurance qualities compared to its successful predecessor. The 380 millimetre slotted and inner-vented steel brake rotors at the front axle are decelerated by six-piston aluminium fixed callipers. The rear axle features a four-piston version.

During the development of the new car a particular emphasis was put on the driver safety. A newly designed safety cage protects the pilot in case of a roll or a collision as does a newly developed race seat which is distinctively shaped around the head and shoulders and can be adjusted individually with the help of padding. A rescue hatch in the roof provides easy access for primary medical attention and for the extrication of the driver.

“The new 911 GT3 Cup is much easier to drive at the limit,” says Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard, who was significantly involved in the development of the new vehicle. “The car is excellently balanced. The new axle geometry is enormously positive for the handling. Apart from that the new Cup 911 is great fun to drive.”

Like its predecessor the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is produced in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen on the same assembly line as the road legal models. At the Motorsport Centre in Weissach it receives a general set-up for the circuit and is tested by a professional race driver before delivery to the customers. The basic price for the vehicle, which is available exclusively in white, is €181,200 plus the country-specific value added tax.

Hi Gregor -- thanks for your message, sir. You will have noted that prior to the launch, there was no official thread dedicated to the 991 GT3 Cup. There were, however, a couple of tangentially related threads on the "991 RSR" and the "New GT3" -- both of which included discussions that might be interested in the specifications, photos and videos of the 991 GT3 Cup. Ron has kindly now created an official thread for the 991 GT3 Cup -- much appreciated Ron! For some reason, the RT notifications seem to have been a bit sporadic recently, presumably relating to the new server. Apologies for any inconvenience -- no offence taken if you prefer to ignore my GT3-related posts. Happy driving!
