    That is the million dollar question. I'm eager to learn more about it before trying to make a judgement call.

    Will certainly be interesting to watch as the factory team continues the development in the WEC races. Unfortunately, I will not get to see it race in person here in the US until 2014. 

    On another note, Flying Lizards announced today that they will be running a GT3 Cup Car in the the ALMS GTC class next year. Hopefully, we will see them move back to GT class in 2014 with the 991 RSR.

    The word is that Manthey will be racing the 991 RSR in the WEC next year in order to develop the car to be sold to customers in 2014.

    PORSCHE WORKS TEAM FIELDS TWO 911 RSR IN 2013.
    For the 2013 racing season, Porsche AG will field two new GT racecars based on the newest generation of the Porsche 911 at the Le Mans 24 hour race and in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). For the first time since the overall victory in 1998, a factory team from Porsche will tackle the famed long distance classic in France.

    The two new Porsche 911 RSR, which race in the GTE category, will be run by the Porsche AG Team Manthey. The role of team manager goes to the experienced endurance specialist Olaf Manthey, who has celebrated five overall wins with Porsche at the Nürburgring 24 hour race and recently fielded a 911 GT3 RSR in the International GT Open.

    "The new 911 RSR is currently being developed by our engineers and tested by our works drivers," says Porsche Head of Motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. "What better time could there be to introduce the new car than the Porsche 911's 50th anniversary."

    That's not good news! The non DFI engine was uncompetitive against the DFI engined Ferrari in terms of fuel consumption. A real handicap in endurance racing.

    Would this mean that the road going RS on which the RSR will be homologated, will also use this old engine?

    If so, will the RS will be powered by a different engine than the normal GT3?

    I hope that it's not true that Porsche fail to evolve.

    In theory it should mean that the road going car has the same engine. However, we all know how the ACO/FiA hand out waivers.

    When will be the road going RS released ? If 991 RSR will enter Le Mans in June then I guess the 991 RS road version should be introduced soon ? (Usually first the GT3 is launched and then the RS iteration), do you know more about homologation process and rules?

    Regulation 2.1.3

    The "LM" GTE Grand Touring car must meet a minimum of the following criteria :

    a/ To be regularly produced by a manufacturer approved by ACO ;

    •A regular production implies a permanent implementation of the means required to produce a minimum of 1 car per week for the "big manufacturers" and one car per month to the "small manufacturers". If the production is not respected, the ACO will suspend the homologation of the car the year after. The suspension of the homologation will cease once the production delay has been made up. It will be permitted to compete with the car as soon as a minimum of 100 road cars for the "big manufacturers" and 25 road cars for the "small manufacturers" will be produced.

    b/ To have a launch campaign : exhibitions in motor show, tests with journalists, leaflets with the technical specifications of the car…

    c/ To have a commercial network at its disposal which provide an after-sales service. An exemplary of the spare parts' catalogue and the maintenance manual must be delivered to the ACO during the homologation of the car.

    d/ To be equipped with an engine used in a production car and made in a quantity of at least 300 units.

    e/ To have a "Full type CEE" homologation or equivalent for United States or Japan. For the small manufacturers an official  "Low Volume" homologation for the model of car will be accepted.

    • Vehicles with a "Low-Volume" type approval which have not undergone frontal crashtesting must comply with the F.I.A. frontal crash-test defined in article 258A-15, with the weight of the series vehicle reduced by 5%, or that required for the full type approval (EU or the USA or Japan).

    f/ The fuel tank of the homologated road car cannot contain less than 50 litres.

    Spyderidol than you very much for posting the rules. Very interesting.

    Can you (please :-) clarify if is there is a delay allowed between the official homologation (that allows the car to be raced) and the regular production run ? This could maybe explain the street 991 GT 3 RS  introduction on a later date vs the 991 RSR homologation.

    The rule is not clear (at least to me), however, it seems like there is a year time period between homologation and actual production (due to homologation only being revoked in the following year if production levels are not met)
