    "Service now" message

My "Service now" message appears during initial start up. It appears that this was triggered by a timer as it was preceeded by messages "Service in xx days". Is anyone aware of what is required to re-set this message? Can it  be done manually or is a scan tool required?

OK..Ok, sarcasm well taken. Perhaps I should've been a little more specific. This is not a "Check Engine Light" or equivalent, rather a built in timed message incorporated into the information system to alert the oblivious that their car is in need of service at this interval. My car has been serviced well in excess of manufacturer's recommendations, and currrently has fresh fluids and filters, including brake and clutch hydraulic fluid. At 30k miles all is very well. I see no need to run it down to the dealer just to re-set the message display.  No worries, after a couple of cycles hitting the "re-set" function it seems to have cleared. Thanks for the advice.

    Re: "Service now" message

You need a OBD2 compatible diagnostic device (e.g. PIWIS or Durametric) to clear the service message. You can reset it momentarily yourself with the onboard computer "reset" functionality, but the message will come back until it is cleared over OBD2.

So what to do? Either you buy an OBD2 device (Durametric cost $300) or you swing by your dealer to have it cleared. It is a 2 minute job.

Considering what most 2 minute jobs cost, that $300 device looks very tempting. yes

So seriously for a moment, you've had your car serviced, so it shouldn't be due another service or the erroneous "service now" message, which would appear to indicate that whoever did the service didn't properly reset the system. Porsche dealer? If not, I assume you had the car serviced outside the Porsche network, if the establishment didn't know, or have the equipment, to reset the system, I'd be somewhat concerned that they lacked the competence to properly maintain your car. Could be false economy there? Smiley Especially if you've now got to buy a piece of kit to do what should have been done properly in the first place?

    Re: "Service now" message

The dealer should reset the light.  I have the Durametric device and have used it for many years.  As my car is an early 997 I have worked with Duram (his first name) in the past to test his updates and changes.  Interestingly I worked with him on resetting the service light on my 997.  There are lots of good applications for his product and he does a great job keeping it updated.  Perhaps you have a few other porsche drivers in you area and you can go in on it together.  I work on my car often and so I like to have such tools around.  Also I am a bit of a tech geek and tinker with the software myself.  Interesting stuff going on in there.

Good luck getting the dealer to reset the light for free.

I wonder for how long into the future " Hal " will be able to tell you what is required and when, plus all the lawyer on board info should anything bad happen.
