Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

    Hello Rennteamers,

I'm going to need new tires for this winter on my Bmw and I was wondering if any of you had an experience with one of these tires (michelin or continental).

I'm not willing to buy new alloys so I'll be using the std M-pack wheels (R18). BTW, it's just for a 3-series diesel.

Thanks in advance for your input. Smiley

    Anyone?

I can't believe that no one here buys tires...

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

Sorry, not much of a help here. AMS did a test of various snowtires two years ago, with the Conti being on of the best. Only drawback has been average hydroplaning qualities. They also tested a Michelin Pilot Alpin but I suspect that it was the previous generation. From my understanding, the PA4 debuted this year.

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

Here is another one from ADAC, which placed both Conti TS830P and the Michelin A4 (not sure how the PA4 is differentiated) at the top of the field. Both are in German, hope that helps a bit.

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

I get in trouble with RC when I talk tires.  lol

Seriously though, all season tires are no substiute for real winter tires (but they can be for N rated summer tires).

I love the Michelin Alpine tires - used them on sedans in the past.  My 911 rides too low for winter tires to make sense.  If there is a little snow I can get by with the all season tires.  If there is enough snow to require snow tires it is generally too deep to matter what type of tire to buy.

Sorry, I overlooked this post. Both, Michelin and Continental, make superb winter tires. Same goes to Dunlop and even Pirelli (Sottozero Winter). I'm talking about the last and the latest generation. You can't really go wrong with either. If you drive a lot in snow, get a winter tire with lower speed rating (H tires are just the perfect combo for dry and snow) and avoid the V or even W tires. If you drive a lot on dry pavement (less snow), get a V or even W winter tire. They are usually sportier.

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

I wasn't expecting some many answers in such a short time  Smiley Thank you all.

I made a reservation this morning for the continental'sTS830P... it turns out that the Michelin are not available in 255/35/R18.

The contis are expensive enough anyway (1.350 EUR). Nuts.

RC, I'm going to check for speed rating. It didn't even crossed my mind that it would make a difference on the snow.

Thanks again to all of you. These will be my first winter tires Smiley

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

    Amazon,

are you sure you don´t want to purchase a separate set of winter rims with slightly smaller tire dimensions (width of 225mm for example)? Financially this would end up on the same level, with a separate set of tires for each season and lower replacement costs should you need to buy new tires in a few years. That, of course, depends on your planned period of ownership.

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

I am using Vredestein Wintac extreme.
    They are very very good.
In fact this year I will buy my 5th set !

I have 225mm at the front and 255 at the back.

But you're right in some way. At first, I was looking to buy new rims and go for R17 instead of my R18, and reduce the width.

But the cost is way higher. It's more like 2000 - 2500 EUR.

Plus, do R17 tires really do work better than R18? It doesn't seem so. At least for the average BMW diesel. Smiley

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

A solution could be to buy a used set of wheels from Germany.
You can always find good offers in ebay.de

Re: Winter: Michelin PA4 Vs Continental TS830P

If you go the 17's route, put some 30mm spacers on the rear, it makes the car look less "geeky".

Did that on the wife's 3 series touriung and it looks good!
