On the lower picture the P1 looks great !!!

(Why does it say PONTIAC at the rear of the car?)

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Yes I can see how some may like it. But I see vague lines and too much smoothness in the headlights and taillight design. Also, some weird fender gaps from these pictures.. look at where the hood meets the front bumper. In the rear, the diffusor bit is very nicely done, but the light unit is strange. I wish they'd done those horizontal bars into that black plastic negative space like with the little brother. One thing is for sure, it'll perform amazingly and raise the bar in the supercar class.

So it's all a question from which angle the car is photographed. Smiley

Pontiac is still part of the camouflage. Smiley

I must be the only one here who is amazed by this car. Its aero seems amazing. And you probably know my allegiance... Ferrari must retaliate with something epic.

Really noticeable how much smaller the P1 is.

At first I also thought so. But after I had seen the pic below, I'm not so sure anymore...

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

any idea the source of the picture.  Odd to see two top secret prototypes from different companies together.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

If I were to buy a car in this segment, I first wait for the Enzo Succesor.

But between 918 Spyder and P1, I would choose the Porsche without thinking for a second. I haven't seen anything like this cartoonish in a long shot.

Not so unusual. Probably taken at the Nuerburgring on one of the industry test days, where the circuit is open to all manufacturers for simultaneous use.

From the patent filings it seems to be the final design unfortunately

    http://www.autoblog.com/2012/09/26/mclaren-p1-patent-sketches-revealed/

I think they had a Zonda modeling for it and a couple of design student did the molding broken heart

    Like it. A lot.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

The general theme of this car, with is dramatic curves and deep scalloped radiuses reminds me slightly of the Mazda Furai. However, the Furai's design language works much better for me.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Well 600hp per tonne and 600 kg of downforce well under topspeed looks very promising datas so far

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

some of the videos on YouTube from the Paris auto represent the car in a more favorable view than these photos IMHO.  The bumper styling on each end is still questionable and the car certainly looks better with it rear tail in the up position (It should work in reverse - only go down for top speed runs).  I do like the side profile view.  Having said all of that, I don't really think Mclaren understands people well.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Best angle so far - probably because you can't see the back :)

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

I like a lot of it independently, but together it looks cartoonish, like a big smile on the cars face.  Having said that, I don't think the Pagani Huayra has an appealing grille but as a total package the car looks stunning IMHO - and i have seen that one in person.

You know, I'm getting tired about all this faster-higher-stronger thing. Today's sports cars are that quick, that their capabilities are far beyond those of the average driver like you and me. What counts much more than power is the new approach from Porsche with the 918. This car is a whole new interpretation of tradtional sports car and definitely a look into the future. Smiley

Some people don't like such an interpretation though (i.e. electric only mode, 4WD, such a huge weight)!!!

Yeah, Frank has left a portfolio as lead designer of long forgotten models in his wake, like the X5, Mini, Ferrari F430

Kidding aside, Stephenson's problem is that the management and perhaps many current F1 owners wanted a reinterpretation of the F1's iconic styling which was of the 90's jelly bean era, which Bangle bashing aside the past 10 yrs, has gotten us used to concave or flat surfacing and sharp swoopy creasing in pretty much every car now from econobox to truck to exotic.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Apart from some garish details (such as the McLaren logo headlights), the overall design has nothing wrong. Typical hypercar design and all for the better of it!

Thank you for making my point. X5 aside, I don't find any of his work beautiful. His designs do have "presence", I suppose (in my book, that's tarring with faint praise), but I wouldn't call any of them beautiful.

Where will the F430 end up in the Pantheon of Ferrari designs? I don't believe I'm the only one to find it to be one of Ferrari's least attractive mid-engined designs (and that includes the 308 GT4 which at least has a certain simple elegance). And at the cost of annoying some members of this board, the MC12 is downright ugly, with that confused rounded front end tacked to what essentially is a Enzo-like angular design. Ditto the Mini, which does not know whether it wants to be a modern or a retro design. Oh, I forgot to start this paragraph with "IMHO".

Take away the guys' crayons, I say, and promote him to a management position.
