    Re: Low octane fuel!

First: I am no automotive engineer so I can only tell you things customers told me.

I am aware that our cars can use 95 octane fuel because the ECU recognizes that quality. We need that feature to visit our neighbor countries (we lose HP and we need more fuel using 95 octane, so that is not the right way to lower your fuel bill ;-)).

I didn’t know until today that the ECU is able to recognize more than 98 octane. I was told that this feature isn’t integrated (probably the automotive industry didn’t want to spent money while developing the car).

And maybe another reason for not supporting V-Power: at least in Germany you can have some trouble when your car has more power than officially claimed (i.e. insurance)

    Re: Low octane fuel!

    Itsme:

Sorry, an engineer working on engine development told me that no car has an (original) ECU which adapts more than 98 octane. Maybe now ECU versions has changed, my information is 4-5years old.

You have missed the point well made by RC, it is not the ECU adapting to the 100+RON it is the fact that the onset of knock is delayed and as he said when intake temperatures rise the high octane fuel will delay the onset of knock compared to lower octane at the same temperature so maintain the timing advance, boost and hp.

It was a proprietary secret but since it seems no tuners have proven capable of programming the Porsche VTG engines properly it doesn't have to be..... A specific test was carried out on a VTG engine under controlled conditions on the engine dyno using different octane fuels and this engine proved extremely sensitive to Octane used, losing 50hp when 95RON was tested and actually benefitting from 100RON. The new electronics/sensor set ups are that much more sensitive on the newer Porsche turbo engines.

Here are the explicit instructions from the tuner and this is for a mild 635PS tune on a 997GT2, everything is programmed using 98RON.

When I go to Mid-Ohio race track for a track event, they have Sunoco 98 (R+M)/2 octane unleaded race gas available for about $8.00/gallon from a standard credit-card-operated pump.

    Re: Low octane fuel!

    RC, question for you..

You mentioned earlier that Ethanol mixed fuel is a no-no..

I was driving thru germany a few days back, and stopped at an Aral station. They had 102, but they all seemed to be mixed with ethanol, so i skipped it, and drove judiciously for another 30 km till i could feed the thirsty car some Shell 100.

Any ideas if Aral 102 is safe for the 911 ( for future reference) ?

    Thanks!

    Re: Low octane fuel!

I have used Aral Ultimate 102 many times in Germany. No problem at all!

    1. Up to 10% ethanol is safe for the 997 and 991 according to Porsche (E10 uses in Germany 10% Bio-Ethanol but it is 95 octane only).

    2. Aral Ultimate 102 does not contain Bio-Ethanol but Bio-Ether. It should be perfectly safe for the 997 and 991.
