Re: Carrying a breathalyzer now compulsory in France

    RC:

Not sure about other countries but in Germany, driving on the right lane is mandatory. It is the law. Not that everybody respects it.

Same over here and staying in the left lane if not passing will get you a fine ( unless there is lots of traffic , then both lanes can be used )

In the UK, moving to a slower lane after completing an overtaking manoeuvre is written in the Highway Code i.e. this is what is expected of road users.

The police however do not interfere to uphold best practices ... just to stop dangerous or illegal driving.

They know it ... we know it ... but they still do it and there is nothing we can do to stop them ... and they know that too.

In one particularly bad case, I got past a driver like that (by overtaking him in a slower lane) and then I moved in front of him and then slowed him right down in his lane to give him a good taste of his own medicine ... sure enough, he then started flashing at me, sounding his horn etc ... I kept him nice and slow for a bit ... and when he tried to get past, I even moved from lane to lane to make sure he stayed behind ... and then, I rolled down my window, gave him a nice single finger salute ... and then disappeared into the horizon courtesy of a Porsche flat 6 engine.

The funny thing about motorcycle riders is that they often quote themselves as an example of how it should be done without realising that they have simply lived to tell the tale so far :)

But the accident statistics don't lie ... it's just a fact that motorcycling is a more dangerous form of transport compared to other forms of transportation ... if you could ask all those fatalities what they would do if they had the chance all over again ... I bet you'd get a different answer! Those people no longer have a voice.

Having recently read my state licensing manuals, the vast majority of accidents occur when the rider has had a drink, is new to their bike or is a new rider(6 months or less). These were all stats based on Govt. studies. Combine those figures with the stupid and reckless driving I see in a lot of the youtube video's and that is your answer.

Being at ease with your bike, having experience riding, avoiding alcohol, and wearing the proper protection actually makes it a rather safe activity. The video I posted yesterday showed an example of being on a bike kept a couple from being hit.

Haha :) Sometimes you have to be ... :)

But it's very, very rare that I would do this ... there have been countless times over the past 25 years I've been driving when slower cars in front of me have blocked me on purpose and I haven't resorted to such tactics ... it needs to be a particularly egregious case before I get 'medieval' towards other drivers :)

Re: Carrying a breathalyzer now compulsory in France

I am driving through France right now, cote d'azur area. Not bad, but 30% of te drivers are insane. In Italy that number is close to 80% :) people falling out of the lanes on turns - priceless. When that happens continiously and you are drivin your new car it takes a lot of unnessesary attention. Germany has changed since the last time I've been there. Munich seems like an entertainment center for couples from Dubai. A turkish valet scratched my car by pulling the luggage out instead of lifting it and did not want to change his way for the second one... Sofitel Munich outright sucked in service oversll. I really enjoyed Leipzig though :) anyways, I will write a long post on my return in my thread and will not hijack this one.

ohh ya, Austria gave me a ticket for a vingette right at the entrance. I pass the border, ohh you don't have a vingette? 120euro please. That felt very wrong and unfair. In Canada/US they would have sold it to you rather than writing a fine.

Before you drive somewhere, you need to learn about the rules. The Vignette for Austria is nothing new, so there are no excuses, not even for tourists. However: The ASFINAG in Austria, as far as I know they are responsible for enforcing usage of the vignette, have the liberty not to fine tourists and to sell them a vignette on the spot. Apparently something went wrong in the process or your expensive car was the reason they didn't offer it.

Speaking of expensive cars: Whenever police stops me, no matter if it is in Germany or Austria or even in Italy, they always ask me what I do for a living. My job seems to be respectful and I never had problems, on the contrary but a friend told a police officer, just as a joke, "my job is a heir" and he got fined big time. He was driving a Lamborghini Gallardo. In reality this friend was running a real estate company but sometimes the bavarian humor isn't appreciated. Smiley

Caution: Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Hungary have Vignettes too.

RC - I know but I would bet NO ONE in America who has not been to Austria or driven in a foreign country even knows what a Vignette is.

Re: Carrying a breathalyzer now compulsory in France

A vignette is just a sticker. This type is for a car. It could easily refer to a vignette that is affixed to a page of your passport for a visa issued on entry :)
