BlackSparrow:
ohh ya, Austria gave me a ticket for a vingette right at the entrance. I pass the border, ohh you don't have a vingette? 120euro please. That felt very wrong and unfair. In Canada/US they would have sold it to you rather than writing a fine.
Before you drive somewhere, you need to learn about the rules. The Vignette for Austria is nothing new, so there are no excuses, not even for tourists. However: The ASFINAG in Austria, as far as I know they are responsible for enforcing usage of the vignette, have the liberty not to fine tourists and to sell them a vignette on the spot. Apparently something went wrong in the process or your expensive car was the reason they didn't offer it.
Speaking of expensive cars: Whenever police stops me, no matter if it is in Germany or Austria or even in Italy, they always ask me what I do for a living. My job seems to be respectful and I never had problems, on the contrary but a friend told a police officer, just as a joke, "my job is a heir" and he got fined big time. He was driving a Lamborghini Gallardo. In reality this friend was running a real estate company but sometimes the bavarian humor isn't appreciated.
Caution: Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Hungary have Vignettes too.
