    Artega files for bankruptcy

    http://torquezilla.com/news/Artega+files+for+bankruptcy

According to the German media, Artega has applied for bankruptcy today. Apparently, this move came after an Asian investor failed to save the German carmaker. According to some of our sources, the deal failed in the last minute and now the company needs to find a solution for its 34 employees. Still, there are some good news as former CEO Klaus Dieter Frers has some feelings for the company and might help it. He promised that he will analyze the situation closely. For those who don’t know, Artega was sold back in 2009 to a Mexican investor. Current CEO Peter Mueller worked hard in order to keep the brand on the market but it appears that building a car brand it’s quite a challenge and he will need more help in the future in order to see the Artega models in the streets.

    Me too...

The problem is, that these "enthusiasts", who start planning/building such cars, don't seem to have a clue about

    1. What customers really want

    2. How good the mass production models are (like the Boxster for example)

    3. How to offer something special, using standard parts

    4. What kind of money people are actually willing to pay for such a car

    I could continue...

To be honest, I actually think that a good Porsche tuner is missing on the market, someone who offers decent quality for a decent price with warranty and without too flashy exteriors.

Someone like RUF but more effective (I think he concentrated too much on his own projects...), offering modifications for all sorts of Porsche models, incl. some own models with a slightly body, based on this modifications in the process.

    To give some insight,

the Artega was launched by Klaus Dieter Frers which is the founder of Paragon Automotive. I was more surprised that he sold it that quickly but from what I´ve heard he had faced a critical state in his main company so had no other choice. Paragon is developing and producing electronic automotive components which go into every major German brand. Just take a guess who makes these fancy sport chrono watches... Smiley

Therefore I doubt that he was an overly enthusiastic entrepreneur. The good and bad aspects of the car can be discussed some other day but he certainly knew what he was looking for. Otherwise he wouldn´t have ordered Hendrik Fisker to sketch the exterior. On the other hand though, they believed that the interior could be developed in-house which unfortunately shows.

To succeed with a new car brand, it needs an enthusiast, a visionary and some big pockets.

The first time I saw the Artega, incl. the specs and everything else, I said to myself: Not interesting. I guess other potential customers thought the same.

    As I said,

I don´t see what is missing in Frers. He runs his own business, started the car brand from scratch, collects vintage cars and raced successfully in VLN and 24h. What more does one need?

Again, the story of the Artega itself can be discussed separately. The car might be good but it is missing the unique selling point that distinguishes it from a Porsche or even Aston Martin.
