Porker, I was at the qualifying session on Thursday, awesome atmosphere isn't it?Smiley

I think Dr Piech will make it a personal issue to see Porsche at the top of endurance in 2014 again personally, with or without Audi, it will be extremely exciting and I am sure their LMP1 will be fabulous.

By then, Toyota will be in full swing, strong rumours about Nissan in LMP1 in the paddocks this year too, and who knows, maybe more players, I heard a little bird mentionning the word Alpine.Smiley

One thing's for sure, new regulations means the P1 will be petrol Hybrid, so the cars will sing and THAT is an awesome news. The Audi is impressive but you can almost hear the tyre roar you stand by the Dunlop Chicane.Smiley

And until the Toyotas were both out, they were giving a good fight to the Audis.

IMSA saved Porsche's honour with a podium, they had to put Anthony Pons in the car at the end in order for him to complete the minimum time a driver has to do during the 24 hours (4 hours).

The GTE pros were rather unlucky but that's the race.

Awesome win for AF Corse who started at the back of the grid.

Awesome news! Great news about all of the petrol cars coming up too. The diesels sound so boring, and the petrol powered cars have so much spirit and whine!

Don't the 2014 regulations also allow for diesels though? I'm pretty sure I saw that in the regulation, even though they are very restricted compared to the petrol cars to even it out some more.

And do you know anything about these "open engine regulations", in which there are pretty much no restrictions regarding capacity, amount of turbos, or cylinders?

Diesels are allowed and are not that restricted. Also- they will be allowed in LMP2

Here is a table with the basic regs.

    Re: 24Heures Du Mans (16 - 17 June 2012)

I just realized Audi was allowed to run Quattro systems in the e-Trons. Can someone tell me how they received an exemption to run AWD?

I was also surprised to see no one tried to field a McLaren MP this season.

    Re: 24Heures Du Mans (16 - 17 June 2012)

No exemption needed. Rules foresee both 2 wheel (rear axle) and AWD (front axle) systems. However, the  front axle (AWD) system can only kick in over 120KM/h

    Re: 24Heures Du Mans (16 - 17 June 2012)

    Spyderidol,

Do you think privateers will switch to diesel in LMP2 class? I sure hope not!

In GT, hopefully the 991 will make quantum leap over the ageing but still impressive 997.

There's also that whole politic behind the BoP which Hartmut Kristen always complains about.... Frustrating.

Futch, I think there may be some privateer diesel cars in LMP2. Mazda has announced a new diesel engine for LMP2 so some are bound to turn up.

I really hope that the 991 is in fact a quantum leap forward, but I am cautiously optimistic. I have some misgivings concerning the engine size. With current BoP, it looks to me like a V8 4.5L engine is the power plant to have.

Although Hartmut has a point, the fact is that without BoP, the current 911 would be lost.

Don’t get me wrong: I hate BoP and I wish they would do away with it, but Porsche really need to come up with something so good (like the 458) that is basically immune to BoP (or it must be the new benchmark).

This is why I’m a little skeptical of the 991 being able to do the job in the top GTE class. I think we will need the 960 to provide the product Porsche needs for that level. (991 could be used for GT3 and Cup products.)

The most heartbreaking story from LeMans. The Deltawing driver who spent 2 hours working on the car to get it back to the pits only to be nixxed by a bad front end that could not be repaired.

In this case, there was nothing real about it. Once again an over aggressive and needless maneuver by a LMP1 takes a lower class car out.

They really need to take a hard look at the rules and put some overtaking restrictions on the P1 class cars when passing the slower classes. It's a 24 hr race not a sprint - and these cars have more than enough power to easily pass the field in the straights or after a turn complex.

I cannot see a reason why barging into the corners and making bonzai passes, bullying the slower cars off the racing line or closing up a hole on the racing line just prior to a turn.
