We've had our 997 professionally detailed

I've had John Drake ( www.johnswax.co.uk ) our local professional detailer out today to give our Carrera S a thorough "going over". The paintwork and general condition needed professional attention to bring the car up to a better than new look.

John has carried out the following work using Zymol products throughout :-

    Stage 1

    • Pressure wash wheel arches, clean wheels inside and out, and doors shuts using only natural cleaners.
    • No contact pre-wash using PH Neutral Snow Foam.
    • Wash car with Zymol Shampoo with pure lamb's wool wash mitt.
    • Rinse car using an Aqua Gleam De-ionising Water Filter.
    • Hand dry using soft drying towels.

    Stage 2

    • Klay bar bodywork to remove any surface contamination making paintwork ultra smooth
    • Carry out HD Cleanse process - this cleanses the paintwork ready for the wax to bond to the surfaces.

    Stage 3

    • The exterior is then finished using Zymöl Concours Glaze giving the car a shoe finish and depth of shine.

    Stage 4

    • Full interior clean including; clean and condition leather, clean windows and dress tyres

Photos of the day's work :-

    The end result : -

The look of the car has been transformed, the dull paint finish has gone, replaced with an almost glass like shine; the brake dust that had become ingrained inside the wheel rims has mostly gone, the leather work has been cleaned, treated and fed and is much more supple now. A superb job, and I thoroughly recommend John to any UK car enthusiast who is particular about their car's condition. The photos really don't do justice to the cars refreshed appearance!

That does look fantastic - now you need to drive it to get it dirty again Smiley.    Now that you've had it several months, I'm curious how you find it to drive (both of you...) compared to the boxster/cayman line... seem to recall that you surprised yourself by ending up in the 997 (which in fact was similar to our process in ending up with a virtually identical car).

Very good work, I am a fan of quality detail jobs, having worked for a good joint a couple of university years myself.

Certainly good, but the guy could probably get into more comfortable clothes. I hope that he used some machine to do the finishing wax polish, not sure if the Glaze stuff will be as durable...

Certainly fantastic to see the car in such nice shape again after being dirty, and yes pics never really show it as well. The rims are like new

No doubt the car will soon be dirty again! Off for a week's break to Shropshire next Friday, so a few hundred miles on the clock and unlikely to be dry sunny weather judging by the forecast - all about the jet stream being unusually far south so the wet weather that is normal further North is affecting us.

Barely done 1,000 miles since taking delivery, but first impressions more relaxed, feels more sophisticated than the Cayman and hugely more comfortable. We'll have a better opinion after our week away - but SWMBO loves the Boxster, has never got over the '06 Boxster S that she really loved. She would chop even the 997 in an instant for a new Boxster S apart from the cost of doing so.

John really knows his stuff, has won many concours prizes and looks after many fine cars - including those of a certain Jay Kay.... He's detailing a Porsche 356 for him in the next couple of weeks. The concours wax he uses will easily last 12 months, he just recommends applying Zymol Field Glaze after every wash - dead easy just a very light spray and polish off. John doesn't believe in machine polishing other than as a very last resort if the paintwork can't be restored any other way.

I applied normal Zymol wax (Cobalt) to my clockwork rat this time last year, and even now 20,000 miles later with the car never garaged the wax is still beading the water now, although will give the car another wax in the next month or so.

What makes you think that? Even SWMBO's shopping trolley is .....  blue! Smiley She did have a green Mazda 2, purchased after she could no longer put up with the daily discomfort of driving the Cayman, but hated it (but not because it wasn't blue) Smiley so chopped in after only a very short time for the Jazz. We have had a bad saga with cars with too many stupid wrong decisions, starting with the Cayman, hopefully now all laid to rest. Whenever and whatever we change next, we have promised ourselves a colour change, although we hope all three are here for the keeping - but we keep saying that! Smiley

Thanks easy.Smiley although you can't really appreciate the difference from photos. Even the plastic wheel arch liners, the bellows under the rear spoiler, door sill scuff plates, fuse box lid, seals and front boot liner have all been cleaned and polished using rubber and vinyl care. The 997 certainly hadn't been as well looked after as we do our cars, a lot of accumulated dirt under the rear wheel arches and I don't think the car had been garaged much in its previous lives. Certainly OPC Swindon didn't give the car a thorough valet which is what they promised they would do, but do any garages? This is the first pre-owned Porsche we've bought so don't have previous experience to compare.

That looks great, DC Smiley Friday I had some fun with the GT3 at the Eifel playground and - as the Track was closed in the afternoon - a GT3 buddy suggested that we should use the time to spend a thorough cleaning to our toys. Geeeez, it took us four hours to remove all the aggressive Schwedenkreuz bugs Smiley, tar and rubber - definitely a harder exercise than the eleven laps in the morning Smiley

I stopped cleaning my car(s) myself a long time ago. In my 20s, I had a real pleasure in cleaning my cars, paying attention to every little detail. Now I barely have time to drive my car(s), so why would I loose time cleaning them? yes So I usually do some superficial cleaning, sometimes even machine wash and I'm done. frown

Personally I find it very therapeutic to wash our own cars; I am not distracted to think about other issues whilst doing it. It's also a very good way to detect imperfections, stone chips, tyres etc that if left undetected can lead to problems later. I've never used a car wash in my life, ever, and other than professional detailing never paid anyone to wash my cars either.

Re: We've had our 997 professionally detailed

Don't get me wrong...I would wash my car if I had the time but if I have to choose between washing or driving the car or washing the car and spending quality time with my family, well... yes

When a friend told me many years ago that the biggest luxury for him is actually...time, I thought he is nuts. Now I understand him pretty well. Time is the biggest luxury and I wish I had more of it. Unfortunately I cannot afford to retire or to downshift a gear or two, this is another luxury I cannot afford. laugh

My biggest dream right now: To forget about work for an entire month, not having to worry about anything. I just can't do that.

Understand precisely RC kiss My children have "flown the nest", my daughter is studying accountancy at Edinburgh University so I only see her a few times a year sadly : now in summer recess she has today flown to Mumbai to start four week holiday in India follows by two weeks in Thailand. Hopefully see her this autumn. We've just had my wiife's daughter and three grandchildren here for a week, not restful but great fun. Son in law is in the British Army and has just started a 7 month deployment in Afghanistan, so we will drive to Germany where he is based in late August to see them all for a week. wink

Time used to be equally precious for us; when we used to own a family ship repair business I never had enough time for anything, now employed by a major defence contractor I am no longer in charge of my own destiny, but sleep better at night and stress is much less. Hence why I now have time to wash cars! smiley

Absolutely agree DC, there's no better way to find out about the small imperfections of your car than to wash it by yourself by hand. I'd only wish I had more time to do so...

    Hi DC

The Aqua blue looks even brighter now it's been detailed, just wondering have you had a brand new car detailed in the past by John?

I've bought my Zymol from him in the past but did it all myself in the past, and did get some reasonable results

Yes, he did our aqua blue Cayman this time last year. It improved even the new car finish! The Klay process removes all the tiny imperfections that are present even in a new car and afterwards it had a glass like shine that it never had when new. I wouldn't bebrave enough to Klay myself as it's easy to do more harm than good if you don't know what you are doing.

I Zymoled my Clockwok Rat last summer but couldn't get near his expertise - but that's John's stock in trade so I guess I wouldn't expect to!

if you don't mind me asking how much did the full works cost - In the past I didn't do the Klay stuff - wrongly assumed a new car would be fine

Local to me £250 all in, obviously he'd charge more if going farther afield. You can always give him a call and have a chat : 07802 650892. Alternatively he will have a stand at Goodwood Festival of Speed if you are going.

Not into footy - but if I was it would have to be Southampton FC - my local new to the Premeirship team. Don't think I'd stretch to a red and white stripe car somehow Smiley  But have to be careful - I work in Portsmouth and their team has just been demoted to League 1 and virtually bankrupt. Smiley
