Wow Iain! Just when I thought you couldn't outdo yourself in the previous car... How wrong I am!

Simply beautiful! You are keeping both cars right? So much work and time was put in the first one despite the learning curve.

Please keep us updated with more. Would love to hear this fire up on the new "Ansa" system kiss

What are your plans with this? Resale, auction or keeping her? I wonder also what has pushed you to do more of refurbishing of parts rather than full new replacements. Is it the time to locate and source good quality replacement parts? A visual quality issue compared to the original parts? Or perhaps just a financial decision as i imagine some refurbishing jobs to be more cost effective (ie. definitely not cheap either) over new replacement parts. Of course since this example was in such good original shape, it makes sense to refurb parts other than some mechanical bits since that is what a true gearhead should do in such a case. But perhaps it is also in mind of finances keeping resale price objectives in mind.. Since this is your second restoration it'll be interesting to hear your decision on the various questions.

Also, how are you attacking the interior, ie. the leather seats? The car is so rare, i'm guessing a full refurb job by a professional is required here. What about the various chrome bits on the car, can you return the original parts to showroom condition?

Mate, this is a fantastic thread, thanks for the pictures and updates. kissI love how passionate, honest and knowledgeable you are about such a big project. It makes me happy knowing there are people doing such quality work to preserve some wonderful history cars. Hope all goes well with this project and keep us updated please!

PS. How's that 911 coming along?

    Kind regards,

    Aaron,

Now that I've finished my marathon post I can answer your questions Smiley

The car is a definite keeper along with my other two Dinos and my old 911 targa. I'm restoring them to the best possible condition so that all I'll need to do going forward is routine annual maintenance. They are all being given rust protection treatment and will be garaged to ensure they stay in good condition. I'll only start to think about slowly selling them one at a time if I reach a point where I feel too old to drive them so that will hopefully be in 25 - 30 years time at the earliest.

The decision to refurbish as many parts as possible is more to do with keeping the originality of this two owner car that really hasn't been touched over the years. My other two examples have had up to 8 previous owners in comparison and had/have undergone various refurbishment work over the years, some of it very poorly done. This car hadn't so I wanted to maintain that impeccable history. I know the story behind each owner of this car and can pass it on when I eventually come to sell it. The decision was also made a lot easier as since doing my first car I have learned a lot more about the model and the market and have made a lot of very good contacts for original parts and now for restoration work. That makes a huge difference to how you approach such a project. My third car is currently in a very poor state thanks to years of neglect and a very poor quality restoration. I'm now in no doubt that once Graham and Jason have worked their magic on it it will equal my orange car in terms of finish.

The "chrome" parts on the car were actually in really good condition with the exception of the front and rear bumpers. Those were sent to a specialist for re-chroming.

I covered the leather in the post but just to recap it is being done by a specialist in Modena, Italy.

The 911 goes into restoration in September Smiley

Right, that's fantastic to read! I reread the whole thread, what a lovely project it is/was. You are right, finding one in such a good used condition with the history and then doing a very good restoration job is a unique opportunity, this is one of the best samples out there when it's done i'm betting! You to think you are actually enjoying and driving these is just Smiley

I look forward to the final assembled car, that paint job is nothing short of stunning. You can see the amazing quality just from the raw pics from when it was still curing out in the sun. Cheers.

Re: 2nd Dino restoration - preparing for the next 40 years.

    Iain,
wow this is indeed turning into a gem. great craftsmanship. Well done. Equally, given the degree of originality and history of the car it would  have been nice to keep it closer to its birth condition. But now you have a car which will last another 40 years! as for the smell nothing beats the smell of new leather, except perhaps the smell of a well kept old car indecision

keep the reports coming - you do tell a nice story and it make great reading kiss

Re: 2nd Dino restoration - preparing for the next 40 years.

    Thomas,

The car was starting to deteriorate rapidly so any hope of preserving it's originality was a pipe dream in reality. There was simply no way to blend in the paint after the various repairs were done and it was also important to take it back to bare metal to ensure no other hidden problems lay in wait for the future. The photo's fail to convey just how badly faded the original paint was and the mottled effect it had created over the car. This combined with the general lack of care in looking after the interior - it was way beyond a simply valet to tidy it up - made a thorough restoration inevitable.

To give you an idea of how it looked .... when it first drove off the covered delivery truck and into my dealer's workshop the staff who had gathered around to look at it thought I was mad and had bought a real dog of a car. All they could see was the poor paint, holes through the lower doors and rear wings, rust bubbling under the front wings, a big scrape on the passenger door, very tired interior with badly split and cracked leather on the seats, a dashboard that was badly water stained, a broken driver's door handle, badly corroded chassis, an oil leak and very untidy engine bay etc etc. I'm sure a few of them thought I'd really lost the plot and had taken up smoking crack smiley What they failed to spot was an incredibly "honest" car that hadn't been repaired at any point and was still fitted with all of it's original parts. I could see the potential for what could be one of the best examples of a 246 on the road. All they could see was a money pit indecision The head mechanic who is doing the work on the car could immediately see why I'd bought it and so could the body repairer kiss

I'm all for keeping originality but the baseline condition has to be very good for that to be possible. These are 40 year old cars that had no rust protection when new and were built down to a price by Ferrari as an entry level model so it's unsurprising that most examples require fairly major attention unless they have been constantly garaged, sparingly used and/or lived in warm climates.

I think the first owner enjoyed looking after this car and kept it in pristine condition whilst the second owner enjoyed driving it but was less concerned about cleaning or maintaining it. I'm hopefully returning it to as close as possible to it's original condition when it was delivered new so that it can be cared for, driven and enjoyed for many years to come.

The only thing it might need to look as it came from a time warp would be the stickers ANSA used to put on their exuast tips.

    Just speechless!  Congratulations!

I wish I can do a project like this someday!

Re: 2nd Dino restoration - preparing for the next 40 years.

    Iain,
I fully appreciate the condition of the car as describe by you and would have done the same myself Smiley At the end you want as you say preserve the car for 40 years - yet be in a position to drive it. Unless the car is only stored in perfect conditions, every old car will have to undergo such a restauration, mine included Smiley, at some point in its life. But what counts most is to enjoy the "journey back in time" everytime one gets to drive one of these older cars Smiley

Regardless, enjoy every post of yours and can't wait for your 911 restauration to start in the fall Smiley

    best,

You are too kind  Smiley    I'm also really looking forward to seeing the transformation of my targa which will have to undergo a similar level of work as it has been allowed to deteriorate over the course of it's life as successive owners have put less and less cash into it's maintenance.

I am equally impressed by your restorations as well as meticulous photo documentary. Should we ever meet up in person remind me to buy you a drink for that!

Have to agree that this color is something special, especially since it looks so good in contrast to the painted black undersides of the body panels. I am actually quite impressed about the details on this car. Do you ever plan to restore one in LHD?

I wish you great pleasure in your work!

Re: 2nd Dino restoration - preparing for the next 40 years.

    Ferdie,

I would only restore a LHD car if I found a GTS version for a good price. That's unlikely to happen though as they are in high demand in both Europe and the US. There was a Rosso Dino GTS that came up for sale in Italy around a month or so back and it sold within days. It looked superb in this colour as well. There is something fresh and vibrant about the colour that just makes the car look a lot more modern and contemporary.

Re: 2nd Dino restoration - preparing for the next 40 years.

    Isuk

I'm nominating you for the Nobel Peace Prize! When last did one man bring so much agreement and happiness into the world?  (Ignore the fact that I love this colour and had a bespoke bicycle sprayed in a combination of pale blue and Aventador orange/tangerine.) I'm not even Dutch!

Once saw a photo of a 997 in this colour and it looked great.   Mmmm....... this makes me wonder......what would the new Cayman in a colour close to this look like? Maybe with just a hint of metalic sparkle - not as much as Lambo's though. Porsche's "standard" orange is too flat to my liking.

Looking very much forward to seeing the final product.

    Kind regards

    To be honest,

I would´ve never considered a Dino of any sort until reading your restoration threads. That´s your achievement. Just wondering if it would make sense to restore such a car in Britain, should the relation of Euro and GBP be suitable. Considering your expertise, how do you rate the quality of the British craftsmanship in comparison to other European countries? From the distance, it looks pretty impressive and meticulous.

    Ferdie,

I've only seen a couple of European restorations and a few US ones. The work I've had done will rival anything I've seen. As ever with work of this type it's all about finding the right people who share the passion for the cars and want their work to be perfect.

Re: 2nd Dino restoration - preparing for the next 40 years.

I dont think the country where the restoration is done is all that important.

Its the actual talent, skill and passion of the people doing it.

Clearly the people who touched ISUKs Dino have all three of the above in spades.

Re: 2nd Dino restoration - preparing for the next 40 years.

    Jim,

you are of course right that it boils down to the people involved. Nonetheless, I do believe that there are regions which are more appropriate for restoring vintage cars than others. In my region, I do know a handful of people being specialized in air-cooled Porsche models and / or Porsche race cars which have their list of contacts again for certain assignments. As Iain pointed out, the garage servicing the Dino beforehand was specialized in a different brand and did not know the specific quirks of this model.

In all seriousness he could launch a business restoring these cars as he has the passion, knowledge and funds to do so. kiss
