Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

Perfect race from Maldonado! I don't know what the team did with the car but hats off!! this season is crazy.

And Alonso is back leanding the championship tied with Vettel... who would of thought after we left the last GP... never count him out no matter what.

So far five different cars have won a race this year, unbelievable! the season is completely open and unpredictable. If this trend continues throughout the season, it means that the winner is going to be the most consistent driver able to make the fewest mistakes, capitalise on the opportunies and maintain a consistent performance thought the varying circumstances from GP to GP. IMO this is Alonso's territory IF Ferrari can maintain a minimally competitive performance from the car. Judging from this GP it seems they are catching up (although Massa would indicate the oppositeangry and Alonso too much, so I guess it would be an average) but this season who knows, maybe in the next GP they don't even make it into the Q3.

The team Ferrari is in fourth place in the constructors championship with 63 points, what is really unacceptable is that out of those 63 points, 61 are from Alonso and 2 are from Massa!! with the same car!!!! Ferrari might as well as leave Massa's car on the pits for the rest of the season and concentrate only on Alonso's broken heartmail

The biggest looser so far this season is McLaren IMO... they have the best car on the grid and two good drivers, yet they all (team and drivers) have made mistake after mistake and have blow away many points and are neither leading the driver's nor the constructor's championships, when they have had everything to do so easily.

BTW, Charles Pic with the Caterham did not deserve a drive through, he deserved a shot in the head broken heart

Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

Well good race, not as exciting as expected. Lots of different pit strategies

    1. Maldonado (Williams)
    2. Alonso (Ferrari)
    3. Kimi (Lotus)

First, congrats to Maldonado for a superb and clean race!!! Holding Alonso off at the end seemed really impossible. Alonso certainly had the pace and wanted to win like no one else.. It was his race to lose and he did IMO. Ferrari strategy seemed very strange, a slow 2 lap delayed response to Williams but it had to do with tire wear.

Renault was very strong again with 3rd and 4th place finish, but I feel like there is more possible from them. Renault had a terrible race strategy today costing him possibly driving for 1st in the end.

Congrats to Vettel for an excellent race yet again going to 6th from 10th in the end passing both McLarens was sublime. But, what about the yellow flag drive-through. I still don't know what lap he was doing more speed. Sad indeed, 3rd was definitely possible.

Schumacher, what can i say.. WTF!!! That was a terrible poor decision from him.

All in all not as exciting as expected, not as much passing either. McLaren and RBR really struggled this weekend, but Vettel was still on of top 3 drivers this weekend making the best of it. Certainly the most surprising is the newfound pace of Williams and a superb drive from Maldonado. It was enough to hold off Alonso, which is a good job.

On to Monaco, where Q DOES matter such that it will be a little more exciting.

Some team developments from my views: ( improvements or not )

RBR   ( - ) They've lost a little and seemed to test too many new parts = no balance
McLaren ( - ) Seemed to both struggle with pace and tires, team mistakes cost many places.
Lotus ( + ) Continue strong drives from both drivers, yet strategy could be better to take a win!
Ferrari ( + ) Not sure, may have improved a little but tire wear and strategy cost Alonso the win this weekend.
Mercedes ( - ) Not as fast in Q anymore and very average in race.. no good pace and/or tire wear today. Driver errors need to stop Schumi!!
Williams ( + + ) Already showed true pace this season, but this weekend was outstanding, fastest car on the track!!!
Sauber ( + ) They have the pace to get between 6-10 maybe even more. Need to work on consistency and pit stops.
Force India ( - ) Seem to have lost some pace in comparison to the pack
SRT ( o ) Just same, picking up last spots inbehind the mid pack
Marussia ( o ) Maybe fighting with SRT this season, seem to have left the last two teams behind
    Caterham/HRT ( - ) Struggling to make the 107% rule.

Right, the guy has a Mercedes yet only scored 2 points so far while his teammate has 41....  Smiley

It's been too man mistakes. He's lost at least 10 front wings if not more. I'm starting to fear that if it had been any other driver he would have been sacked already. It's simply not enough anymore as much as i'd like him to win a couple more before final retirement.

Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

Given his driving, they need to install those wheel hub devices from Ben-Hur on Schummacher's car and then he will start to do much better

Michael Schumacher will start the Monaco GP with a five-place grid penalty after his Turn 1 coming-together with Bruno Senna on lap 13 of the Spanish GP.

Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

A fire broke out in teh Williams box and injured some people surprise

The FIA is likely to discuss with teams a review into the storage of fuel and the high voltage KERS systems as well as other potentially hazardous materials after a fire broke out in the Williams garage, an hour after the Spanish Grand Prix finished.

The Williams team was celebrating its first win since 2004, with Sir Frank Williams in the garage and team members as well as media present having just done a celebratory photograph.

The garage was quickly evacuated, but the fire took hold quickly and the garage was gutted. Thick plumes of acrid smoke poured out from the garage

Although no official statement has yet been released, Williams media staff confirmed that no-one had been seriously hurt; four Williams staff members were being treated. It’s believed one is for burns and the rest for smoke inhalation. Meanwhile four staff from the next door Caterham team also received attention, as did one Force India staff member, but were unhurt.

There is no word yet as to what caused the fire, but clearly something set off the fuel rig in the back of the garage and there was some speculation among informed sources from another team that it may have been related to the storage of the high voltage KERS, which has to have its own secure area in a garage. This has not been confirmed.

Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

With five different winners, from five different teams, in the first five races of the year, 2012 is turning out to be one of the  most exciting series of the past few years.  It's so refreshing not to see total dominance from one driver/team.  Now we need a win from Raikkonen in Monaco to really shake things up!

I think he deserves one by now, he's been so close...

Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

I am very happy with Raikkonen's comeback performance too.

Raikkonen is someone who should have another title to his name on the basis of his performances with McLaren but he was denied by McLaren's unreliability and tyre problems, particularly in 2005.

Before the current season started I was afraid that he might not put too much effort given his odd personality. I thought he might have come back to F1 as a "tourist". On the contrary he is very serious, committed and still fast kiss

How much longer can Massa keep his F spot, surely his days are numbered. Must have one water tight contract because any other driver would have been shown the door..

Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

Well Ferrari is a loyal team and they focus on one car only. So what the second driver is essentially just adding rubber grip to the track smiley

Re: 2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix at Barcelona

I never expected Maldonado to do it but well done to him. Good to see Williams performing well again.
