I'm not really sure about the m550xd. The sound seems to be a bit artificial. Maybe better to go with a 550iX. But the torque is amazing. So far as I heard from a M source they limited the acceleration data to "only" 4,7 sec. (0-100 kph) to keep the M5 free of competitors in their own house....

what is the 550 ix is that the 550 motor with a power upgrade to 450 hp ? I came across this comment by RC in another post somewhere.

I think this tri-turbo diesel engine is the best pick of X5-X6 and 5 series range. It would also suit to 7 and 6 series perfectly. The best DD engine so far, IMO.

A friend of mine works for BMW as an engineer and is familiar with both the M5 and M550dxDrive (both much more than thousand of kilometers driven). He also preferred the diesel because even the M5 is not a sports car and the diesel is the perfect daily driver especially for long trips. Enough power, always sovereign. Also on the highway this one is far quicker than more than 99% of all others, even at higher speeds and always very relaxing. He drove with both cars in the Alps and thinks on wet roads and tight curves the allwheel-drive is the more secure / faster car for most drivers.

I still don't get it why BMW would not give the new M5 AWD. Plain stupid in my opinion because I know at least two people who passed on the new M5 because of the lack of AWD. Even I may have had considered the M5 with AWD...
My C63 AMG Coupe is fun to drive but to be honest, I wish it had AWD. The traction issues are obvious, even if they don't bother me as much as I thought they would. Still...

+1 for this power you need to have AWD. It might be because of the integral steering, which can't be in combination with the AWD. Myself, I passed at the AWD in because of the integral steering at my Seven, but on a high performance car like the M5 you just need more traction.
