Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

My son is (or was just) in Austin for South by Southwest.  He's and indie record label guy, and has been going to Austin for years.  Must be a kick...

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Congrats on your son, sounds like he's having fun.

Austin is a very fun part of the world to live and a great place to drive. The excitement starts in the driveway ... from here I can go a thousand miles without hitting a city, when the wanderlust strikes me. wink

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

I finally got to drive the 991 a few days ago. The steering is an issue for me. Below is a quote from a review of the new upgraded Vantage V8 2012.

    "" Ride and handling
As the 911 cuts back on steering feel, so the V8 Vantage enhances it. This is what makes the difference between Porsche and Aston Martin, and which is why 911 buyers may now want a V8 Vantage. Simply put, this car defines what good steering feel is about. It is a masterclass in what it should provide. " "

    http://cars.uk.msn.com/reviews/aston-martin-v8-vantage-coupe-2012-onwards-1

I know nothing about the author, Richard Aucock, but I think that Porsche has given up something core to its central values as "drivers" car.

There is a reason they are called "spoilers".

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Personal taste - I love them.... Cant understand why people dislike the OEM aerokit but the GT3 (which is almost identical usually) and love aftermarket mods which are quite often very similar too.  I would take OEM over aftermarket everytime!

For those of you who want to know how the 991 can be disassembled and access the engine.

Showing the sound symposer for instance Smiley

looks like an air filter change is going to be an expensive job with so many things (spoiler, fans, rear bumper!!) having to be removed!!

that looks like a new car too .. I would not be pleased if my new car had been dismantled just for a you tube video!

Interesting how without the lights you really get a sense for how tall the back is.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Good first blood for Tiff, although I assume CS2 PDK would've copped much better with the Gozzila.

Also, IMO, RHD manual cars tend to be a bit slower than LHD versions since majority of people are 'right handed' and they cannot produce the same amount of feel on a lever from the left hand. That of course falls into water if a British tester is a left hander... Smiley

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

being a fan of EVO - I am somewhat "surpissed" that the best car magazine out there for my taste is comparing a min 550hp 4wheel 4 rounds max monster with a 400hp manual shifter..... - maybe their readers are fed up with having GT3's as eCOTY's and t4 needed to unpack the big guns - but I cannot understand that Tiff just makes a sloppy remark on +300 kgs less weight and no comment on his x-amounts of shifting loosing at least 0.3 sec per shift on the GTR.... - the comparison is like a base elise with a Turbo S - although both might be more reliable.......crying

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

I had a conversation last night over dinner with a good friend that I found reflects what has happen with the 991 .

My friend has always been a car lover , but never fallen for any of the 911 . He owns a Cayenne.

He was telling me that now he finds the 911 ( 991 ) to be very desirable . He did say : finally the 911 looks now like a real car ( not a toy anymore , even the Gt3 he find them to look like a kid's toy ) .

He likes specially that it looks longer . The back is now beautiful ( to him ) as the line crossing the back makes it more elegant ( he did say : looking more as an AM )  ,  and he very much liked the chrome line around the side windows.

The driving experience is also now pleasant as it is balanced , and the center console is nice ' because it is like the Panamera'

My friend is not an old fat fart ! He is 39 years old, sporty, active, successful.

To me his opinion is exactly what Porsche was aiming at  ( so they did a good job as lots of new customers will find the 911 more ''GT'ish '' which suits them more ) , and what to me  this is now less appealing  . I know the 991 becomes another beast once pushed and with proper sports options, but generally the new look does influence the general perception of the ' new 911''.

I am eager to see what the new GT3 will look and feel  like .

I would agree with him. Although always loved 911, the design was never its virtue. They've made 991 look like you could finally put it on your screen as a wallpaper.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

LOL, I 've had 911 pictures as wallpaper ever since I can remember...

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

What I would add is that Porsche have made the 991 to look more expensive and inside and outside. This attracts more some segment of the potential clientele. However, they have done that in a way that doesn't make the car look too flashy and ostentatious which is good for traditional buyers too.

Personally, I prefer the 997.2 for its smaller size and simplicity. An advantage of the 991 is that it could also double as more relaxed GT type of car. However, the majority of 997 buyers also have other cars for whenever they'd  wish to travel in comfort.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

I had a 991s, with PDK and sport chrono, for a longer time to test this time. I'm really being astonished with the difference in improvement over 997.2s. I feel and undertand that the car is more civilized but cant see it being more GT, keeping in mind that I drive a 997.2 GT3. It is not a GT3 like but still a very sport aggressive car that in my opinion far sportier than other cars of its class. That is being said, it sounds that the 991GT3 would be a hell of car.

New Gemballa kit for the 991.

    I like the front...

... but dislike the rear (at least the triple exhaust tips):

I'd have to see more pictures of it to be able to judge.. but... wait... is that a triple exhaust pipe?!? mail

BTW, back in the days, Gemballa used to have that awesome 993 front bonnet on the 996... I loved it. Would like to see that on a 991, should really match the styling!

What is interesting though is the surface between the tail lights, they removed the arch-shaped surround that connected the taillights to the bumper and instead added an additional horizontal line.

That's the first time I've ever heard anyone suggest that.  Remember us RHD drivers learn to drive like that from day one so it's completely normal for us.  Also we all do lots of things with our left hands in our daily lives - tying your shoelaces  takes just as much dexterity with the left hand as it does with the right.

that really is an interesting mod on the back. you could see that piece being made a reflector for the 4S versions.

    great eye balls there

enlightened - looking at these rims and tire-diameter the RS probably rides like a Cadillac......

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Servicing the 991 is nightmare. Servicing time and cost will go up and owners who like to work on their cars will be discouraged from doing so.

Rattling noise will also be more frequent and loud after servicing.
