Why the camouflage? yesThe car has been displayed with the understanding the final product may have some revisions. People have put money down on the car based on it's showing.

Can this car be some other new Porsche model?

Hmm, don't know what to say. Of course it's in the wrong colour, in fact this is not a colour at all, but even if it was painted in a shiny metallic finish, this mule has lost a lot of the sex appeal of the design study to me. enlightened

Hope that headlights are not final, this mule looks like ferrari 430... also the front part is too light for such a massive rear...

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Guys, no lights are final and they simply used the molds from the concept car to slap some rough bumpers and panels on this working test mule. No details yet, no final headlights and except the final bodywork to be a lot more fine tuned and beautiful. I really like the general lines though. it looks sort of feminine to me.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

The rear lights are the ones of the 991!

The car has many different lines from the prototype - just check carefully. Its a bit like with the very first Boxster prototype and with the later "real" car. It had some same lines but it was completely different!

    2014 Porsche 918 Spy Photos...

    (May 2012)

What It Is: Porsche’s new supercar, the 2014 918, which will be launched as a Spyder with a removable top and as a hybrid only. Later, a coupe body and racing versions could be added.

Why It Matters: This car is the spiritual successor of the 959 of the 1980s and the nearly decade-old but not forgotten Carrera GT. The 918 model designation also evokes memories of the infamous 917 race car. This new supercar is Porsche's ultimate technology showcase, it will be the company's most expensive car, and it is designed to deliver extreme performance and efficiency simultaneously.

Platform: Like the Carrera GT, the 918 is an extremely low, mid-engined supercar. The 918 Spyder is built on a standalone platform, but we hear it will share components with the 911.

Powertrains: Propulsion will come from a naturally aspirated, 9000-plus-rpm 4.6-liter V-8 with 570 hp, a rear electric motor with around 120 hp, and a front electric motor with around 110 hp. Combined output will start at 770 hp. Porsche will use performance-oriented lithium-ion batteries. (For an in-depth look at the 918’s powertrain and more information, check out our prototype ride.)

Competition: The air is thin in this price segment; there will be fully electric and therefore far less usable competitors such as the Audi R8 e-tron and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell; the 918 Spyder also will be compared with other supercars, such as the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 and the McLaren F1 successor.

What Might Go Wrong: Although managing three different sources of torque is extremely challenging, we have no doubt Porsche will pull it off. But is this hybrid what supercar buyers are looking for? Many will keep it in a climate-controlled garage, while others will want to take it to the track; but who wants to drive on electrons alone with this kind of car? Don’t worry too much, though, this thing is going to kick ass.

Estimated Arrival and Price: Look for the 918 in late 2013 or early 2014, priced at around $850,000. A total of just 918 examples will be produced and not one more—at least of the original body style.

Carlos, why do you thinkt the F1 successor won't be a direct competitor? Smiley

Aventador is too cheap in comparison, but new Enzo and F1 successor will definitely compete with the 918.

Porsche 918 Spyder spy pics and specifications...

Porsche 918 Spyder Snagged Topless, Plus Full-Specs, Turns the 'Ring in Under 7:22

    (19 May 2012)

Only a few days after Porsche released an official set of images of the pre-production 918 Spyder, our spies sent in new photos of the plug-in hybrid supercar, this time testing with its top down.

The new crown jewel of the Porsche lineup features a targa top solution with a pair of detachable carbon fiber roof panels that can be stored in the front luggage compartment and a small windowpane located between the flying buttresses.

The pre-production prototype is finished in a matte black color with white stripes that harks back to historical Porsche 917 racing cars.

Surprisingly, Porsche is not keeping a lot of secrets from us having revealed initial specifications on the 918 Spyder. The spiritual successor of the 959 from the 1980s, of which only a little over 330 units were produced, and the Carrera GT from the mid-2000s (1,270 built), sports a full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) body bolted to a carbon-fiber tub.

What really separates the 918 Spyder from all Porsche models is the plug-in hybrid driveline, which links a mid-mounted, 4.6-liter V8 with more than 570PS (+562hp) and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission driving the rear wheels to a pair of electric motors.

The first electric motor is rated at 80kW (107hp) and drives the front wheels, while the other delivers 90kW (121hp) and is mounted in the gearbox housing turning the rear wheels. The system's combined output surpasses the 770PS (+762hp) mark.

The electric motors are powered by a lithium-ion hybrid battery that can be charged in about 2 hours with the use of a compact rapid-charger that will be offered as standard. Naturally, the Porsche hybrid features an energy recuperation system that turns the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electric current when braking.

Porsche claims that the 918 Spyder will be significantly faster than the Carrera GT both in terms of acceleration with a 0-100km/h (62mph) time of less than three seconds (Carrera GT: 3.9 seconds), and also the racing circuit with a lap time of the Nürburgring Nordschleife of less than 7:22 minutes (Carrera GT: 7:32 minutes).

While we somehow doubt that fuel economy will be a priority for 918 Spyder buyers, truth is, being politically correct and green does matter in our days.

And Porsche delivers in this department promising a guilt-free average fuel consumption of around 3.0lt/100km (equal to 78.4mpg US or 94.2mpg UK) with the use of the batteries that allow for a pure electric range in excess of 25 kilometers (+16 miles). Of course, to achieve these numbers one will probably have to drive the 918 Spyder like a Prius, but that is another story…

Porsche also tells us that he top speed on purely electric power is 150 km/h (94 mph), while with the use of the internal combustion engine the 918 Spyder exceeds 325km/h (202mph).

Other tidbits worth mentioning is that the 918 Spyder will feature five, self-explanatory driving models named E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot-Lap, the latter for maximum output and speed, as well as the adaptive shock-absorber system PASM and rear-axle steering.

As we have already mentioned, the styling of the 918 Spyder has not changed much from the 2010 concept sans the new headlamp fixtures, different wheels, the addition of full size exterior mirrors, the subtly redesigned rear end and the relocation of the exhaust pipes from the sides to the top part of the engine compartment.

Production of the 918 Spyder will commence on September 18, 2013, with first deliveries in November of the same year.

Porsche plans to keep production strictly limited to 918 units with pricing set at €645,000 (about US$820,500 at today's exchange rates), excluding tax and country-specific charges. For those of you interested, the Stuttgart-based automaker has already opened the order books.

Chris Harris doesn't seem to be too much of a fan. This is what he twitted: 918 test mule, with some curvy carbon panels to join the gaps would look better than the proposed production styling...

He's referring to the rolling chassis we saw a few month ago. He prefers that to this version. He may have a point.

I fully understand him. I'm not very convinced by these first pics of the nearly undisguised 918 as well. One can only hope the final product will look a bit more impressive. Smiley

And if the rumours about the Enzo II are true (and I have no doubt...), the 918 Spyder won't have an easy life either. Smiley

Porsche isn't Ferrari, looking flashy is for others.

I actually like Number 05 but there will be some changes but don't expect anything radical. The base design is already there, the changes will be in the detail.

I hope they can keep up the performance numbers, especially the 0-200 and 0-300 claims.

Seriously...I am tempted but I am still far away from being able to really afford one.

Luckily, I don't think that Porsche is going to sell the whole 918 production batch immediately, so I may get a chance if I want one.

Btw: I saw a gorgeous GT2 RS today...matte black...I was very tempted but I luckily resisted. My wife would have killed me. indecision
