That sounds likely. One of the drivers in Leipzig talked about low 6:50s as their aim, but that it was always very difficult to get clean laps at the Ring. Imagine: IAA opens next week and Porsche announces the 918 with being the fastest production car ever doing the EU cycle at 3 litres... I think Mr. Piech would have liked that!

Oh... I failed to mention that the same bird told me that press release for 918's lap is coming next week.....

It looks like they are trying to set the lap time now:

There was a piece of news in the Autocar today that Porsche are contemplating a 2+2 coupe (984) based on the 918's stretched carbon tub but without the hybrid tech.

A full styling model allegedly exists with 2 rear doors, Mazda RX style, I presume.

The purpose is to boost the profitability of the 918 project which has run over budget and below projected sales.

    A mid-engined, 4 door, 2+2 is that a first?

I doubt that "984" would be used as an internal type number, as it has already been used in the past for a development project which was broken off.

Stupid question probably, is the 918 a Porsche Motorsport effort, or is it created by the regular Porsche engineers or does it transcend both?

I think the 918 was mainly developed by the Motorsport division in Weissach, but I'm sure it had some development done by the regular Porsche division as well.
On a side note, some of you are mentioning that It could break the Radical's lap record, is that even possible on street-legal road tires? I would be very impressed if it did!

    1. Frankly, trying to stretch a mid-engined 918's carbon tub to make a practicable 2+2 coupé sounds much harder than just starting with a clean sheet of paper, so I'd say it's not very plausible.
    2.  I think there'd be more interest amongst buyers in an unstretched version of the 918 without the hybrid tech.  Smiley

I think that the "960" model, using some technical elements of the 918, a different styling and selling at 12C prices would be of interest to many Porsche friends.

Porsche should leave the 918 alone, as a technical highlight even if it will ultimately lose money.

Most probably, 918 Spyder will use Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. But judging from the attached image, I think that the tread pattern is strangely different to the “regular” MPSC 2 tyre…

The PS Cup 2 on 918 is actually N0 spec..

But I don't know if there's any difference between regular PS Cup 2 and PS Cup 2 N0 spec..

I can't the Porsche crew scraped up the left front Air Dam, and drilled holes in the front of this example to put on a California tag......... I think the state would have excused them, for a brief time, for not having a front tag...........I hope they drill holes in the front of the productiopn 918's ! enlightened

Sorry, I mean , Don't drill holes in production Spyders..........

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

^^ I wonder why they didn't just put a bracket extending from the splitter? Anyway maybe they're trying to make it look tattered and torn like they did with the concept car?

And here is my 918 RS rendering!

    "Verdict

This was, without a doubt, one of the best days in my life as a motoring journalist. What a car! If it was not too late, I would marry rich or sell my soul to the devil just to get my hands on the most desirable contemporary Porsche. Who would have thought that a plug-in hybrid can be this much fun? Who would have guessed that one and the same vehicle could cross the city of Leipzig without burning a single drop of fuel and then lap the ’Ring at close to seven minutes? Who would believe that six months before the launch only 387 of the 918 limited-edition pieces are spoken for? So, dear millionaires, if you missed out on LaFerrari and P1, the 918 Spyder is still available at €675,00. And at the end of the day, it may well be the car to beat"

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

For the 918s price, Porsche doesn't seem too worried about its Range Rover sized panel gaps.....

For a halo/pr/future technology testbed/domestic political car Porsche seems to have hit all of their short term targets.

But as Mike said, for owners it could just be another "orphan car." Talk of upgradeable battery packs is one thing, a new DIN standard panned for them would probably have given some potential buyers reassurance about keeping their car up to date over its ownership life.
