You really want that Porsche has to stop producing the Cayman in the future because nobody actually wants to buy a Boxster Coupe ?

It does seem like the logical extension or projection of the Boxster design to a coupe, also taking into account the spy photos seen to date. I doubt the new Cayman will turn out to be as much of a surprise at this point as the new Boxster was, with its CGT like doors and side intakes, and its rear lights with built-in spoilerettes.
I don't know if RC knows something he's unable to share, but it seems to me that at this point, we're talking about details, such as the spoiler treatment, and the rear light treatment. It is clear from the spy pics that the car will remain a hatchback, and that it shares the new Boxster doors (camouflage similar to Boxster camouflage). Thankfully, it looks like the problems (imo) with the overly curved bubble roof and rear hatch have been addressed in a subtle but sufficient way.
I very much doubt that we are going to see a notchback like the Dino or the 914. That would have been an interesting surprise...

The only thing I know (and honestly, this time I don't know more) is that two design variants have been discussed at Porsche, one similar to the new Boxster and one which is slightly more independent but still far enough away from the new 991 design. I don't know which variant has been chosen but I actually think that the Cayman can only survive if it can part itself from the Boxster Coupe design. Not sure if Porsche was brave enough though.

I almost posted this after your Macan insider rumours - 2 petrol variants and a diesel...
Next you'll be telling us that rumour has it that it's going to have 4 wheels and a windscreen...

I take what RC tells us at face value. He does tell us when he knows something that he cannot share.
I usually cannot share things I only got from one single source because the source could be compromised. Same goes to details like precise hp figures for example, dangerous thing to post precise figures because there have been a case when a car manufacturer, I won't say a name 
, provided early engine hp figures to a limited circle of employees and suppliers, each of them getting different hp figures, to be able to identify the "leak" (department) later on. At least this is the only explanation for something like that, otherwise is wouldn't make sense.
Regarding the Cayman, I heard last year that there is a certain tendency in development and marketing to give the Cayman a slightly different front and a slightly different rear vs. the Boxster but I never heard if that happened or not. I have to admit that I was more interested in the Panamera and 991 by that time, sorry about that. I always pick up information and rumors with the occasion or when I speak to somebody on the phone but never intentional. This is how it works...slow, unpredictable but sometimes pretty accurate. 
Separating the Cayman from the Boxster, design-wise, would have made sense in my opinion.
Surprise, surprise...I guess.

I think the 981 Cayman shown in this thread, aka Boxster Coupe, is going to have some real problems if it is also priced higher than the Boxster as has been the case. Another $5K USD will easily take the 981 Cayman S into the $80K USD territory w/ relatively few options.

Got out at the right time then. 
No doubt residual values of late current model will plummet once the new car is out and about, as happened with the 997. Only way I could have justified the cost!! Our Cayman sold the same day we took it in, apparently, so demand is high.

I was told by my dealer at the Boxster launch last week that the Cayman was perbiewed at the Boxster launch in Gran Canaria to the guests. I guess anyone that went should be able to confirm even if no cameras were allowed.
Someone on planet9 did a writeup of that event and confirmed they'd seen it. Sworn to secrecy though..

Someone who saw it told me "no real surprises". So I guess Porsche went with the less independent looking look. A chance missed in my opinion.

Any update or news on the new Cayman now that you have made peace with the fact that you are still sans the Pana for a while? What I'm curious about is whether the Cayman will be its own species or a Boxster with a tin roof? Also wondering if the roof profile will be slightly different (flatter)? What I never liked about my old CS was that the roofline always seemed too pitched.
