You are so lucky to have this oppurtunity! One of the best Porsches ever built. Do you plan to keep it as a garage queen, or drive it like it was meant to be driven?
Drive it like hell!
It makes it even better that someone like you bought it! You ought to be proud of yourself. It's so awesome that such a historical car won't just end up parked forever.
What other Porsches do you have in your garage?

Futch - what a fantastic car. A piece of history that must still be an incomparable experience to throw around on the track!
Congratulations and enjoy it!!
How much effort is the maintenance on that transmission and engine?
Very expensive sadly, the plus point is that they appreciate with time, in the long term. Especially factory cars like R5.
Spyder, here's its complete history.
Completed in early 1973 and retained by the Porsche Factory to be entered as a Werkes team racecar. -
March 25th, 1973, 2nd GT & 8th overall at the 1973 Valleunga 6 Hours driven by Gijs van Lennep & Herbert Mueller. -
April 15th, 1973, 1st GT & 9th overall at the 1973 Dijon 1000 KM driven by Gijs van Lennep & Herbert Mueller (# 26).
- May 6th, 1973, 5th overall at the 1973 Spa 1000 KM driven by Gijs van Lennep & Herbert Mueller (# 41). -
May 27th, 1973, qualified on the pole for the 1973 Nurburgring 1000 KM but DNF driven by George Follmer & Willy Kauhsen (# 66). - Later in 1973, was retained by the Porsche Factory and was converted into the prototype 2.1 liter Turbo, making it, apparently, the first ever turbocharged 911.
- 1974, DNF (as a result of a turbocharger problem) at the Imola 1000 KM, driven by Schurti & Koinigg. - 1974, retired and placed in storage at the Porsche Factory, in last-raced condition.

Most amazing history! What a beauty, you know the first ever 911 Turbo wow
Curious as to the milage? Probably in the 20,000km range?
Those engines are not in mileage but in hours.
This one's close to new, completely refurbished by Gunnar racing.
Tons of photos on their website.
To give you an idea what such a car sounds like... It is truly one of the best soundtracks I've ever experienced.
Futch, I just came across this picture of Tour Auto 2012. Is this you by any chance?

The history of this car alone is just stunning. Since it was the first turbocharged 911 why was it converted back to the n/a-engine? Does it have more historical relevance in that state and therefore higher value or was it just a preference of the previous owner?

Yes it is!
Another Tour, another amazing week. Our result is poor, I think we finish 19th or something like that, I stalled in the first rally stage and at Charade, I was leading but drove over an oil patch in the last lap which sent me in the sand bank, did not finish, huge penalty, shame.
Honor was restored with a victory at Le Castellet after a huge fight with Humphrey's Ferrari 308 Group4.
It really is a fantastic event, and a dream to drive 5 days non stop, 3000 km, in a Porsche prototype from the 60s!
Now the focus is on Le Mans Classic and modern racing with VdeV in my 911 Cup and I will also race this year at the 24h of Spa in a 458 GT3!
Exciting stuff!

Good question indeed. It was Kevin Jeanette's choice to restore the car in its 2.8 RSR form, possibly because that it how it started its life.
In the meantime, I have acquired the 2.1 RSR Turbo from Manfred Freissinger!!!
It has the original engine bloc and the original body parts. But the original chassis is on the 2.8 now.
Owning both makes sense as both of them have shared the original chassis. The Turbo needs restoring and will be ready for Le Mans Classic 2014.

I agree, the Tour Auto must be a fantastic experience for a car enthousiast, like a step back to a glorious time... I'll be present at the 24h of Spa, maybe I'll even put my Porsche-preference aside and consider a small cheer for your 458.
Enjoy!

You are crazy. In a good sense.
Guess I would do the same in your position. Agree that these two complement each other very well and in this way, it was actually a decision to your favour that the first one was converted back to 2.8.
Thank you guys.
Here's a video of Derek Bell driving R5 just before it was converted back to a 2.8 RSR by Gunnar Racing, it's awesome!
The first EVER turbocharged 911, I am lucky and privileged.
