    Goodbye RS60 Spyder ... Hello 981S

After nearly 4 years and 29k miles, my first Porsche has gone. It was utterly superb, and never ever put a foot wrong. No warranty issue ever. It went to the Alps a few times, and always excelled. Fantastic handling and decent ride.

I loved, loved it. I really didn't want to sell .. at least not until I started reading about the 981S.

Reasons for getting 981S (delivery in May 12):

    1. DFI engine; flat max torque of 360NM from 4500 to 5800rpm
    2. all new, 40% stiffer chassis
    3. 330mm front brakes instead of 318mm on RS60
    4. 50% quieter with top up
    5. 35 kgs lighter
    6. longer wheelbase, and wider front track, increased agility
    7. looks great .. at least in pics
    8. new interior

    My current 981 spec:

    1. Carrara white
    2. Red roof
    3. Carrera red interior
    4. Painted roll over bars
    5. Model designation delete
    6. Wind deflector
    7. Manual gearbox
    8. 20” Carrera S wheels
    9. PASM
    10. PTV (with limited slip differential)
    11. Sport Chrono (with dynamic transmission mounts)
    12. Sports seats plus
    13. Rear park assist
    14. Auto dimming mirrors and rain sensor
    15. Electric folding mirrors
    16. Homelink
    17. Light design package
    18. Cruise control
    19. Heated seats
    20. BOSE
    21. 6 CD
    22. Sport Design S/W

Am seriously toying with the idea of a ‘pure’ 981, and deleting 20” wheels, PASM, PTV and Sport Chrono, saving £4k.

2 of these seem to be the new ‘performance’ options (i.e. PTV [only with PASM] and Sport Chrono) which are a ‘must have’ – am not sure that I will really notice these options in most of the driving I do (very few track days, mostly country roads and motorways), apart from more buttons. For me, it’s all 4 of nothing.

Salesman suggested trading 6CD, PTV and Sport Chrono for PCM ..

Spec needs to be finalised by end Feb, so have time to consider.

    Re: Goodbye RS60 Spyder ... Hello 981S

Good choice! Would have done the same!

Is LSD standard or coming with 'some' package? I would chose it for sure though...

    Re: Goodbye RS60 Spyder ... Hello 981S

PTV and Sport Chrono are must have options, forget about your salesman.

Manual ? Are you sure ? PDK is wonderful and performance is better too.

agree they are not, but the CLS is the cruiser, and the 981S the sports car, with the manual gearbox.

plus so few manuals are being ordered, it will be worth more when it comes to resale Smiley

    Re: Goodbye RS60 Spyder ... Hello 981S

You can use PDK with paddles (or buttons)...not much different than manual, just minus the clutch.

Manuel - like me you are not looking to win races or set lap times but actually enjoy the drive to its fullest!

    Off enjoying my car...

    1. You can cut it off (and save additional weight)

    2. You can dance to the music of the engine

    3. You can actually dance to real music from the sound system

    See...many possibilities. Smiley

P.S.: Fun means for me to be extremely fast and I can do that much better with keeping my hands on the steering wheel. Smiley This is the purpose of paddles and sequential shifting systems. Manual is as fun as driving a 30 year old Porsche...  Smiley Smiley

It's not about getting there as fast as you can, it's about getting there while really enjoying the ride ...

I agree PDK is awesome (drove the 991S with PDK etc), but it's too digital for me.

    And I don't have a beard!

PDK is digital ? Are you still using an analogue walkman or an iPod ? Smiley

Congrats on not having a beard (this is kind of weird you mention it Smiley) but hey, I don't have a beard either, at least not in my face. Smiley

Jeez, this PDK thing is becoming a bit of an obsession with you.  Tastes differ, that's the way of the world - so let the man get a manual if he wants a manual.  Enough said.  Smiley

Isn't "beard" British slang for a gay man's girlfriend/wife? broken heart

Never heard of this usage before your post. But I did some research.

in England, beard when used in the car context, is about age and nostalgia for the past.

     definitely manual for me.

I have an auto CLS55 Smiley

We had two Boxsters with manual transmission, the last one with the super slick sports shifter - like you up to then we wouldn't even think about anything else in a sports car. We than switched to a PDK equipped Cayman S - and we would never even think of going back to a manual. Don't associate PDK with a slushmatic conventional auto - it's comparing chalk and cheese, believe me.

But as others here have said, each to their own Smiley

I have driven PDK on a 991 C2S for a few hours, so I know it is a fabulous transmission. The changes are seamless and ultra quick. If I wanted a non manual gearbox car, PDK would be perfect.

My dealer phoned me a couple of weeks ago, on the off chance knowing we weren't too happy with the non PASM ride quality of our Cayman (after that dealer's advice not to bother with PASM on 18" wheels) and I was told "trade price for the Cayman - list price for the new Boxster" - as bluntly as that.

My advice to any British potential Porsche buyer - if it's an Inchcape owned dealership like Porsche Centre Bournemouth - avoid them as if they had bubonic plague Smiley
