Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

    Spyderidol:

Personally I disagree. The new front brings down the nose of the car. The old one made the car look like it was driving around with it's nose in the air. Again, these are personal preferences.

    +1

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

The most notable aesthetic difference to me is the side "air intakes". That was the design element that I disliked the most in the original Boxster. The way they've made it more streamlined and tied it into the car in the 981 has really impressed me. From a purely visual standpoint, I prefer the 981 to the 991 cab.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

^ Agreed. This is the first Boxster that I would consider owning... but won't decide until I see the new Cayman!

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

I also like the new air intake/door crease design on the Boxster, but it does take a big step forward beyond the smooth Porsche side look.  Would I like it on a future 991 Turbo or other variant?  That's a hard one to answer.  My instinct is to say no, but if it is appealing on the Boxster, why not on the 991?

Most probably the turbo intake won't have the door crease, judging from the spy pics. The intake itself, underneath the sticker, looks similar to the oval 981 intake but the door is normal 991.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

I agree that the turbo will not have a side crease--I was just raising a theoretical question.  Mauer has clearly chosen to differentiate the Boxster more than ever from the 911 series, and I think the side crease works fine on the Boxster.  To put it on the 911 would be a highly questionable design decision...

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Like to get some feedback on whether you all think the options on the new 981 configurator is complete?

I noticed one glaring omission on the 981 which i hope may be introduced at a later point in time - the hardtop option. Do you all think that this generation won't be offered with this option?

Also, has anyone noticed that the regular Platinum Silver color is the same as the GT Silver on the configurator? (hope they fix that soon)

Also, any thoughts if Porsche will ever bring 4wd option to the Boxster/Cayman line (only model range without this currently)

Look forward to hearing from anyone who might have an inside line to the 'source'.

    cheers

Highly unlikely and I personally think it would be a negative anyways.  AWD would add weight and expense and it is only a benefit for sportscars that have difficulty putting down power (more power than traction).  I don't think a mid-engined car with 315hp and limited torque is going to have trouble putting down the power (at least in the dry).

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Somebody said they think design wise this is the best time for Porsche, but I disagree. I think the 991 is beautiful (front end specifically), but I just can't get over that ugly rear end. Same with the Cayenne. I thought the 987 was a gorgeous car all around, but now it looks too awkward and over styled.

I think the best time for Porsche design was around the time of the 987 and 997, say 2004-2011. Each car had such purposeful styling and not very many unnecessary details. And the 987 truly was one of the most beautiful cars. The 981 is almost a shame. All Porsche had to do was put the mirrors on the door of the 987, give it some proper intakes, broaden the proportions a bit, and it was perfect. But they didn't. I'll stop complaining though, because all this means is that the 987 and 997 will always be very special cars to me, especially now with Porsche's design direction. I'm sure I'l eventually grow to love the design, but as of now, I'm not feeling it (not saying I hate it though).

I can agree with you about a Cayenne, but the rear of 991 is just stunning!

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Pictures don't do justice for Cayenne. I've done 180 deg. with this car. Seeing him IRL, more so with the Turbo kit and wheels, makes you eat your initial words and think how stunning this car is. Even at first the questionable rear light do make sense in person. There is nothing better in this category. The gen.1 Cayenne seems just plain ridiculous next to it.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

My only complaint with the Cayenne is the colour of the rear lights deosn't match with many body colours, especially since they are so large. IMO they should offer a a lighter colour option like the 997.2 Klarglasoptik.

In these two images it really shows how much more mature the 991 look than the 981 boxster.. I understand that the new boxster appeals so certain people, but I'm not among that crowd

So - has anyone had a chance to drive the 981S yet? Perhaps secretly.... RC?

    :D

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

the back shot shows what will be one of the bigegr changes to the new Cayman - the tail end will be much more raised and loose that drop tail look.

i really like the way the back end of this new Boxster got raised in this re-design.

i have only had my turbo for 6 months but i think it is going back to the dealor for a new Boxster

I have the blackened Tequipment taillights on the Cayenne and maybe it doesn't come across on this picture but it makes a big difference. It looks less plastic or less bling bling as my sales guy said.

    Much better than standard Smiley

I'd like to see an additional option in grey and red or white and red for more choice.

The blackened rim helps, but I still do not like the shape.  Just seems odd.

But new generation Cayenne is otherwise a fabulous car...

That looks awesome dxpetrov! Here is something I did back when the spy shots of the undisguised Boxster came through. Ironically, these are both photoshops are of the SAME EXACT CAR. Check the plate number and the spec.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

    Also, both are extremely good-looking

The rear side window of the top one is much nicer (IMO).

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Don't know if it has been mentioned before in this thread but I found curious that the Boxster's manual gearbox is a 6-speed not the 7-speed of the 911...

I think that is because the top one is a 911 rear window, and the bottom one is a 987 cayman window.
I hadn't notcied the difference before, but I reckon you're right, the 911 rear window looks pretty good on the Cayman.
