Can someone explain to me why the EXACT same option on 981 that also exist on 991 is about 10-20% cheaper for the boxster? For instance if you want to have the 20" carrera s wheels painted in black on the 991 it will cost you about 1400 EUR for the 991 but only 1100 EUR for the boxster. I understand that PSE and other options are cheaper on the boxster than for 911 since it's not the same parts, but painting the wheels should really be no difference since they are exactly the same yes

Yes, it is called a premium.

Does anyone here actually think that the 991 is more expensive to build than the 981? Or that the parts are more expensive? Smiley Smiley

No, clearly not. You are paying a premium for a car to fit into a certain market segment. The same applies for all Porsche models (and other manufacturers too obviously). For example, Porsche gets away which asking a higher premium for the Cayman than the Boxster, which is probably the only coupe on the market that is more expensive than it's cabriolet counterpart. Why? Because it has it's own brand (Cayman rather then Boxster Coupe) and 5 measly HP more. It has been engineered, more from a marketing-side than technical-side, to fit a higher segment. It for sure does not cost more to build than the Boxster, I would rather guess the opposite given there is no soft top mechanism.

Most parts are developed and manufactured to fit multiple models and are hence the same across multiple models. Even the engine block is the same. I made some upgrades to my current 987 interior and all original plastic parts were stamped 997 on the back. Go figure.

You could also call it symbiosis.

The Boxster is Porsche's entry level model and loss-leader, which does not in itself earn much profit. But due to many common parts with the 911 a lot of money can be saved on design, development and tooling, making the 911 more profitable than it would be as a standalone model.

Without the Boxster the 911 would not be as profitable, without the 911 the Boxster could not exist at all, because it would not be economically viable. Porsche learnt a lesson when it nearly went bust from building the old 911s and the 944/968 series in such small numbers with virtually no common parts.

A co worker of my wife has a regular Boxster. She rode in it, came home and said she wanted one. She said you can have the TT. I said I wasn't interested in keeping the TT so we went to the dealership and they had the exactly model (black on black S)she wanted and we traded the cars.

I tried to persuade her to wait for the new Boxster but she was not having any of it. When she wants something, it is always now.Smiley

Not just you, it's universal among wivesindecision

So you did trade the TT in for the Boxster, sorry to hear the TT is no more.

Biggest improvement is clearly the inside, much better looking than previous model. Exterior looks more modern and fresh, great job from Porsche.

I like the new Boxster a lot... will probably replace the MR2 with one. (If I choose the same color, my wife may not even notice!)  Smiley

In the above comparison the new Boxster looks much much more serious and mature though.

+1 on white/blue/blue.  Next choice would be your first white/tan/blue pic...

White/blue/blue with white stitching or white/black/blue with white stitching if Yachting Blue is too light for white stitching.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

One strange thing that came to my mind when I looked at some images of the new boxster today... When I saw it the first time a couple of days ago I really liked it ALOT, but now I'm not sure... Quite the opposite from my perception of the new 911... I was not convinced when I saw the updated 911 the first time, but now I really LOVE it's looks... strange.. just had to share this thought

Wasn't it Dr. Porsche himself who said that enduring designs are ones that take time to grow on you? (or something to that effect)

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Usually a well executed, simple clean lined design will grow on you and last a long time.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

I think I like the new interior the best. Even though I loved the overall design at first, I like the new headlights less and less.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

The 981s design cues are powerful and muscular which demand a powerful and muscular engine in order to avoid the inevitable "all show and no go" impression common among wannabe down market sports cars attempting to impart the gloss, but not the performance,  of high powered sports cars at a much lower price.  The Boxster has never been a wannable sports car. It's original form w/ relatively low power engine was an authentic modern day homage to a previous era of nimble and lightweight but low HP sport cars.  The problem w/ the 981 is that it telegraphs CGT/918 Spyder performance in its design, but offers only 315HP instead of  the 400HP which would give it performance as formidable as its design elements.

Actually, my favorite combo for 991 is platinsilber w/expresso natural leather and for 981 GT silber w/expresso natural leather and brown top.

If I ever buy a Porsche again, I will get silber or white exterior color with cocoa/expresso interior color.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Rear looks great, sides look awesome, but the front end is ruined by the ugly bulging headlights and awkward bumper shape.

I much prefer the 987. A lot sleeker, and less distracting.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Personally I disagree. The new front brings down the nose of the car. The old one made the car look like it was driving around with it's nose in the air. Again, these are personal preferences.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Porsche line up has never looked better than lately (say from Cayenne Gen.2 introduction). Each new model update is a quantum leap towards the design perfection. They just need to iron out (a bit though) the Panamera through some better details and we will have it all.

Porsche with Michael Mauer on board is riding on the wave crest of design sophistication and maturity, and all other German manufacturers (who are all lost their way IMO) must suffocating from envy. I can easily say that Porsche is now on par with Italian design school strenghts (of course I am not saying he uses the same language). He just does wonders to car design and Porsche had a right call to hire him back in 2005. Just remember what he did with Mercedes back in late 90' and early 00' when arguably they had best design direction and models.

Just to emphasize something: the only model in current line-up that he had no influence in design as had been penned before his arrival, is Panamera. What will happen to next Pana is mouth watering just having a thought about it...

Dunno if I completely agree with you.  I think the quantum leaping to design perfection goes against the brand's most important tenet: evolution. The 991 evolution of the 911 is close to perfection - but they've broken the rule with the Boxster

I think the Boxster has shifted too much in one go, and too far away from the flowing, graceful lines of the No1, 356, 550 and CGT.  The fact that it's such an immediate hit is testimony to that.  Even Clarkson will like it - he'll think they've fired the "laziest design team in the world".  And then, at the end of the piece, he'll lament their demise...

I hope they don't change the Cayman too much, and you know, most people are slowly warming nicely to the Pana.  And the slower the better in the long run, so I hope that evolves too.

I have no doubt that RC is correct about the Cajun and Pajun being the money-making future, but as that happens, the brand's central pivot point moves down-market.  To balance it, bring on the supercar...

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

The Boxster is just a perfect example of great design progression/evolution. Whilst keeping similar elements they enhanced each one of them in creating a design now no one can argue with and bringing more fans to once not really favorable model.

It's all may be frustrating to the fans of yore, whom appreciated simple uncluttered solutions and less flavour, but for majority people, including me, Porsche finally started speaking proper language worth of more spread admiration and approval.
