Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Both 991 and 981 sales will increase exponentially.  Both are fabulous advances from their foregoing models.  So my advice is be patient, test drive both cars, and then decide.  If you can't wait, buy an outgoing model--but don't be surprised if you find yourself having some buyer's remorse...

    Bearhunter:

This WAS my 2005 S Cab with only 22K miles on it.  Was totaled March 2 2012 by being hit at 60mph on the driver's side.

    My heart is broken.

I am writing to corral some opinions.  I don't like the 991 a single bit.  I believe Porsche has taken a turn for the worst regarding this automotive specimen.

My question is, do most folks out there believe that the Boxster 981 still retains the soul of the purist and is therefore a good replacement for the new "911"?

In other words, if you were to replace the 2005 997, do you think that the 981 is closer in spirit  to the 997 than the 991?  By the same token the 991 is closer in spirit to the Panamera.

Do you guys think that there will be a decrease in sales of the 991 and a bump in sales of the Boxster?

Is it safe to assume there will be a Caymen Turbo then too (with a few more BHP) - or will that stray way too far into 911 teritory?

On that basis there should be a GT3 style equivalent for those that prefer NA power to artificial induction.... :)

I would love that, but my guess is that it wouldn't achieve the same fuel (and manufacturing) economy of a 4-cyl.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

    Bearhunter,

welcome onboard. I agree with CPA4S below, if you have a higher affinity for the 997 variant than its successor, this is about the best time to find a remaining 997 convertible on the lot, possibly a GTS model. Apart from that, take a Boxster for a spin and decide for yourself if the differences in handling, power and design are suitable for you. Judging by the first reviews, the 981 Boxster will be even more impressive in the handling department than the 987.

    CPA4S:

i think that the mid engine is a mid engine and the rear engined 911 is a rear engined 911. if you love the 997 so much buy a new 2011 or 2012 left in a dealor lot - they will have to dump the last ones to get rid of them - just be patient & have the cash ready.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

I guess this means we will also see a 981 Cayman Turbo (with 5hp more than the Boxster Turbo in good old Porsche marketing fashion), in which case the 991 will have a tough competitor around a track...

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Wow, that's what I would certainly call a rumour - why would Porsche introduce a turbo with such a power output ? Don't get me wrong, but a 350 to 380 hp Boxster turbo would indeed be very new territory for Porsche. Reminds me of the days of the 944 turbo. I would rather have thought Porsche to develop a turbo for the lower hp range...

So, let's keep fingers cross that the rumour is not only a rumour...Smiley

So the HP ranking will be:

    3.4 6C

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

apparently, all the rumours are about a 4c, 2,5l, turbo with the hp range RC mentioned before (350 to 380 hp) - I still find it hard to believe, but if this materializes - WOW !

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

    I really hope not!

The sound of 4c Turbo would be just horrid!

There is nothing wrong with current engine choice...

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Yes, I am in doubt about the figures too, but remain positively hopeful indecision

350-380HP in a light Boxster will be fast and easy to tune. Not sure the character of a turbo engine really fits the car, but we will see. A high revving "GT3-like" setup would be more suitable IMHO.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

I think it is obvious that Porsche will take the engine of the coming 991 turbo and cut 2 cylinders.

    Simple calculation:

    3800 / 6 *4 -> arround 2500

    530 / 6 *4 -> arround 350

Modifying the 2.7 6 cylinder boxer engine would be more effort

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

At least it will still be a boxer/flat engine. But a 4C to be above the 3.4 6C in PS and more expensive

Yes, it would be a Porsche novelty if the turbo model is not the top-of-the-range. Unless it is an environmental lightweight turbo to showcase low emissions, but then the power figures 350-380HP does not fit.

It will be interesting to see what follows in the media about power and performance figures.

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Personally, I would not mind seeing a 4 cyl car as long as it turns out to be a kind of "successor" of the 944 turbo concept - why not ? (I started my porsche life with a 944 and loved it...)..

The 944 range was all 4C and the 944 T was a top car and easier to drive fast than the 911 of the time.

But in the 981 range, I'd find it odd to put a 4C engine above a 6C. We'll see.

Doesn´t it make perfectly sense? The Boxster is the entry-level model, a four-cylinder engine ensures enough distance to the 911 and the can even differentiate the engine´s character to be vastly different from the 6-cylinder powerlant.

And if all runs well one might install this powerful four-cylinder engine in the 911 as an entry-model configuration, just as it has been with the 911 and 912. After all, wasn´t that engine the most powerful of the 356 as well?

Regarding sound, I have owned several Volkswagen boxer engines and love the sound. Same goes for the Subaru or Alfa engines (of the past), is there any better sounding four-cylinder configuration out there?

Re: OFFICIAL : Porsche Boxster 981

Just imagine - as one might see from my posts, that I like the idea of a turbo 4cyl. - put this engine into a Cayman R mk II (or whatever) and you would have a nice track toy - I would think that especially in the club sport or track day group of porsche addicts around the world, such a car would have a major impact. I will keep fingers crossed, ole !Smiley
