Any comments on this video?  I was surprised that RS8 bested the new 991, for example, in the 0-60 sprint...

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

AWD gives a better launch, otherwise looks like the less expensive VW group car acquitted itself rather well...

    Wonderbar:

991 S is slower (0-60 mph), that as to do with the fact that the R8 is 4WD (better traction on launch). But on the 0-100mph 991 S is better, wich i think is better for the 991 S(he catches the R8). Even in the Ski pad the 991 (with RWD) is better. Also the brakes are better (in the 991 S).

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Also, the 991S was a manual (PDK will be quicker off the line):

    http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2011/11/il-track-tested-2012-porsche-911-carrera-s.html

BTW, that braking test has more to do with the tires, weight distribution, and ABS software than the brakes (a single panic stop tells you very little about the overall braking system).  Any car of this caliber has brakes that are strong enough to lock the tires and engage ABS (on the first stop).

Also, another diss on the steering feel, "Steering weight comes and goes with front grip level, but the graininess/feel is no longer there."

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Yes, with PDK the 991 S would have better results.

And the 991 is a "rear-engine" car... that says very much (also with the brake test, because of the weight distribution...)

Was an R8 manual as well? If so - very stupid to compare these two with different gearboxes...

Track Tested: 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S (by Inside Line)

    (22 November 2011)

Inside Line tests hundreds of vehicles a year. Cars, trucks, SUVs, we run them all, and the numbers always tell a story. With that in mind we present "IL Track Tested," a quick rundown of all the data we collect at the track, along with comments direct from the test-drivers. Enjoy.

An all-new Porsche 911 doesn't come around too often, so when one finally arrives we don't waste any time getting down to business with it. The minute we secured the keys to a 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S we headed straight to the test track to run numbers on the redesigned coupe.

Since it's a Carrera S, it features the 3.8-liter flat-6 tuned to produce 394 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. And since we're not big fans of automatics, we requested a 911 with one of Porsche's new seven-speed manual gearboxes. It won't run numbers as quick as a PDK-equipped car, but it has seven speeds; we had to try it. Later we'll get the automatic, which is the only way to get a 911 with launch control. For now, take a look at these numbers and see what you think. Is this 911 one for the ages?

    Db @ Full Throttle: 92.8
    Db @ 70 mph Cruise: 68.4
    RPM @ 70 mph: 2,100

    Tester's comments:

Acceleration: Biggest news here is that the 911 no longer produces its trademark axle-hopping launch. Instead, it merely hazed the rear tires and resisted bogging down the engine once the tires hooked up. Shifter feels a little vague in that I rarely trusted my 2-3 shift, yet it always went in. Tall gearing -- needed 3rd for quarter-mile. (All runs done in Sport Plus mode with exhaust open.) Also felt some sort of shift-shock reduction with each upshift that wouldn't allow chirp. Shifts were smooth but slightly delayed.

Braking: Medium-firm pedal with moderate jump-in but amazing power and effectiveness toward the end of the stop. Very little dive (firm suspension setting), not wiggle, and distances grew shorter with some heat in the brakes. No fade at all.

Slalom: Quick turn-in but a small delay in yaw reaction. Tracks very true to steering input but requires a little patience for the chassis to catch up. Never felt threatening or apt to spin -- even with drop-throttle. Had to be prudent with throttle at exit, but it sure feels like there's an LSD back there making sure all the power is used effectively.

Skid pad: One of a handful of cars that oversteers comfortably, confidently, precisely all the way around the circle. Steering weight comes and goes with front grip level, but the graininess/feel is no longer there. I could steer with the throttle all the way around.

I think just having the "Carrera S" logo on the rear would be ample.

My dealer called me inviting me for the official presentation and test drive on 1th December in Algarve but I wont be able to go, only 7000Km distance and professional meetings could prevent me from being present at such event. He was two days ago in Sevilha circuit testing the car and liked it very much.. Only bad remarque he made was the rear space seats, the roof is too low making the head space almost zero for a mid adult,  he said it has less space than  997, apart from that, perfect Smiley

Actually this is very interesting fact. I was convinced that space on rear seats is enlarged because 991 is 100 mm longer than 997. Roof space is expected, because roof line is lower for 10 mm.

I don't think the cabin is really shorter by 10mm - the height of the car is lower, since the whole car sits lower on its suspension by 10mm and they shortened the overhangs (so entering and exiting driveways won't be harder).

Maybe headroom is worse, because the rear seat is further back in the body where the roof is getting lower (due to the shape of the car)?

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Indeed, if you look at the side profile, the roofline is lower in the 991 compared to the 997, its flatter and slopes downquicker towards the rear, whereas in the 997 is more rounded, more humped. I think this is the reason for the lower head room.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

I like the trade off.  The lower roof line is worth it, as I would never stick an adult--mid size or not--in the back of any 911 variant..  Moreover, I think Porsche should offer a "rear seat delete" option and an attractive rear compartment storage area with a Panamera like retractable cover...

They have - but with the emphasis on driving over shopping, they're using the extra space to pull the engine forward a bit more than the 100mm on the standard 991, and, with tradition in mind, they're going to keep calling it the Cayman.

On 991 , engine is not pulled forward for 100 mm  -  only wheelbase is extended for 100mm

Anyone who knows if there are any reports/reviews of cars equipped with SPASM? Seems like none of the press cars are equipped with this  ... The only one i've seen so far is the one tested by Sport Auto. Anything mentioned about this in the article? My german knowledge is quite basic angry

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Tonight was the 60th Anniversary celebration gala dinner of the existence of Porsche in Australia.  I was there for this event.  They recounted how Norman Hamilton (first Porsche importer here) loaned money to Porsche to engineer and build the first RHD Porsche ever after a handshake deal between him and Ferry Porsche, and had that shipped to Australia and in true spirit of Porsche, promptly was involved in some racing activities.   That is how Porsche started here in Australia as some may already know.

Appropriately (and I was surprised by this), tonight was also the worldwide unveiling of a RHD 991!  I like the car, spent much time looking at it and sat inside of it.  The rear seat room is definitely better than before, but not by much at all.  Here are some pics.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

The time of the new 991 on the 1/4 mile run is rubbish. That's a 400ps car that weights less than 1500kg and has to be in the low 12's not in the high. That's the time of the old 997S with the 355ps.. Smiley shame..

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

I love the lookof the new rear lights, very cool. I expect the facelift version to actually be hollow in the middle part.
