    2012 F1 Pre-Season

Guys, after this weekend's final race in Brazil, some of us will no doubt suffer F1 withdrawal symptoms .... so please feel free to post any news on winter testing, rule changes, driver line ups for 2012 etc here :)

    Re: 2012 Pre-Season

I'm keen to see what will be decided at the World Motor Sports Council meeting in December 2011.

I expect the Austin race will be officially called off then.

Also, I would expect to see a decision to be made about Bahrain too. The Bahraini ruler has called for action folowing an independent report on human rights violations during the 2011 Bahrain uprising. Call me cynical, but the timing of his announcement neatly gives him time to lobby interested parties before the next WMSC meeting.

Hopefully, there will be more clarity about driver line ups for 2012.

Force India said they would make an announcement after Abu Dhabi. Still no news yet.

I wonder who Toro Rosso will pick. Ricciardo? Vergne?

    Will Barrichello join Renault?

    Will Raikkonen join Williams?

Interesting! Torro Rosso draft McLaren's chief designer! Wouldn't call it an improvement as per latest results... :)

    Re: 2012 Pre-Season

hahaha  "F1 withdrawal symptoms" thats a correct term, I find myself wondering if i missed a race and then i remember we're done with the season.

    Re: 2012 Pre-Season

I do not expect a big change for 2012 compared to 2011 - except that I am hoping Mercedes will be able to compete of the level of RB,MCL and Ferrari. I believe that Red-bull will still be the team to beat - but  hope Vettel will not continue with his poles/winning and "gets a bit more nervous" while not being in front all the time controlling the race - I just cannot handle another season seeing that finger..... smiley -

+1 Good to see Kimi come back to where he belongs. Rallying for 2 years got that out of his system (I hope) but it's clear where his talent lies.

Ferrari = creative and aggressive. Hopefully that works for them.

Not particularly thrilled about Kimi returning, I've always found him a bit back-stabbing in his ways.

    Re: 2012 Pre-Season

Hate to see Bruno Senna dropped, if that's what's happening. I thought one great feature of the past season was the quality of the rookie class. Senna drove well, as did Di Resta and Perez. Fun to watch.

Hulkenberg & Di Resta drive for Force India in 2012. Sutil loses out.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/16222284.stm

Ricciardo & Vergne drive for Toro Rosso in 2012. Both Alguersuari and Buemi are dumped. The decision regarding Buemi doesn't surprise me but I'm surprised about Alguersuari. He scored more points than Buemi especially in the second half of the 2011 season.

Grosjean to drive with Raikkonen at Lotus (Renault)

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/16105103.stm

Both Petrov and Senna are out.

Lotus is targeting a F1 championship win within 3 years. I think there is a near zero percent chance of this actually happening.

There is no evidence to believe Lotus is on an upward trend and no evidence to suggest that RBR will lose its dominance. Also, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes will not be hibernating over the winter. Lotus Renault is indulging in wishful thinking IMvHO.

AFAIK the vacant race seats are at Williams and HRT. It's not looking good for Barrichello.

List of driver line ups so far for 2012

    http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/7384361/Only-Two-Seats-Still-Available

It's rumoured that Sutil will join Williams alongside Maldonado.

Looks like it could be the end of the road for Barrichello. IMO he should have bowed out gracefully with dignity at the Brazilian GP, his home race, at a time of his choosing rather than being dumped by his current team. I hope Alguersuari can join HRT ... it's a Spanish team after all and this would make for a good place for Alguersuari to learn a lot from PDLR.

    Re: 2012 Pre-Season

Thanks Easy for the links, missed your daily news while you were on vacation. indecision

I agree that there is a huge bunch of very good drivers out there. The career latter at least in Europe produced some remarkable and professionally acting talent that is performing on a very high level. Drivers such as Alguersuari or Senna are far from lacking talent yet face some heavy competition. Very curious how Raikkoenen will fair, Schumachers results show that time in F1 is moving on...

    Re: 2012 Pre-Season

I think Kimi will struggle ... rather like Schumi has done. F1 moves quickly and Kimi has missed a lot of the changes e.g. Pirelli tyres (which has been a massive issue for some drivers), no-refuelling (weight distribution challenge when driving) etc.

His thoughts on 'coming home' to F1.

    http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/7391536/Raikkonen-I-Feel-Like-I-m-Coming-Home

What he doesn't appear to realise is that the F1 he is 'coming home' to is not the F1 he left.

Schumi, 7 times world champion, has struggled to outperform Rosberg who has never been on pole, never won a race and not come near to winning a championship. It's never easy to get back in the saddle.

Massa has been nowhere near his best since his accident.

I fear the same outcome for Kubica too.

Trulli optimistic re Caterham F1 ... they will finally have KERS

Meanwhile Martin Brundle thinks Vitaly Petrov may replace Jarno Trulli at Caterham F1

    http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7391953/Brundle-tips-Petrov-for-Caterham-seat

Could Barrichello be staying at Williams? RB is 'waiting for good news' from Williams. This could mean anything and IMO one should not read too much into it.

    http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7392502/Barrichello-hints-at-new-deal

Meanwhile Adam Parr of Williams thinks they can turn things around. I see no evidence to suggest this. All there has been is a change of personnel. Even if they do manage it, it will take 3-5 years IMO.

    http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7396765/Luca-I-wouldn-t-swap-Alonso-for-anyone

Ricciardo says he needs to be more aggressive. Who is his PR guy? He should not be making negative comments about himself even before the season has started. What is the point of managing expectations from now? He should keep such thoughts/doubts to himself until after the first few races. I suspect he is already worried about being outshone by his rookie team mate, Jean Eric Vergne. He is counting the chicken before the egg has hatched IMO.

Damon Hill is a nice guy but is proving how out of touch he is. He thinks Kimi could win more F1 titles. What grounds is he basing this opinion on?

    http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7399017/Trulli-Pay-drivers-are-less-committed

Fascinating view from Gerhard Berger on STR axing Alguersuari and Buemi

    http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7399182/Berger-STR-made-right-decision

I agree that STR needs to find drivers who could eventually be considered for RBR but stating that Buemi and Alguersuari were of the same standard is not fair IMO - Alguersuari had a much, much stronger 2nd half to the 2011 season than Buemi did

Lauda thinks RBR's rivals need a perfect car to beat Vettel

    http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7399943/Lauda-Seb-s-rivals-need-perfect-car-

I think his reasoning could be used to form the opposite conclusion as well i.e. RBR already have a great car so, as Alonso said recently, the scope to improve it is less whereas Alonso said Ferrari have much more scope to improve their car.

I think Lauda's comments were true for last year - given that RBR had a vastly superior car i.e. RBR's rivals had to have a perfect car, a perfect weekend etc to be in with a chance of snatching a win if RBR and/or Vettel made the tiniest mistake.

In 2012, the domination of the RBR is a possibility but is not a certainty ... so that vital assumption cannot be made until we see early evidence for it in the winter testing period.
