    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

    dxpetrov:

If someone needs more than 4 seats he can look elsewhere. Panamera should stay unique and as close to a sports car configuration as possible. If not it would've been just another people carrier.... Smiley

Thats nice in a fantasy world but we are talking about the rear world. Having 2 o 3 seats does not define the Panamera nor does it make the Panamera unique, there are other limo-coupes and even SUV with only two rear seats, what makes the Panamera unique its how it drives. And since we are talking about sales, having to look elsewere is not very smart. Having 3 rear seats will not only appeal to a greater target population base, but would also remain every bit as Panamera. Those who prefer two large seats in the back and would never need a third seat can chose the 4 seater, and those that would what to be driving a Panamera but for family reasons or whatever need to have a thrid seat available in the back for certain ocasions could opt for the 5 seater, with no loss of performance or character or anything. Everybody gets what they want.

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

    Spyderidol:

The Panamera  is the first car in this segment with an undertray cover that  encompasses the driveshaft tunnel and the rear mufflers, helping to further reduce air resistance and lift forces on the axles for better streamlining and enhanced fuel economy.

The car’s undertray guides airflow to exactly the right points, where specific Panamera components require extra cooling. Intake gills around the rear axle differential, for example, draw in cooling air to keep the differential cool and efficient at all times.

Then that may be a techincal reason why, since I don't see any other posible reason for not offering 5 seats option if they we able to.

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

Indeed, and by "lifting" the driveshaft tunnel into the car, they are able to lower the ride substantially.wink

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

I still wonder: The new M5 is a 5-seater and apparently it is almost as fast as the Panamera Turbo S on the track. Only reason it can't keep up is the lack of AWD (traction issues). So why would the Panamera with four seats be better ?

Oh, the next gen Panamera will have 5 seats with a 4 seat rear sport seats option and this is a fact.

I guess this is probably because it will do away with the current chasis and use the A8 platform in the next gen Panamera making 5 seats posible. I still think a car like this needs 5 seats, they need to find some other way to improve handling that will not force them to only be able to offer 4 seats in it.

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

I agree with al the critical comments about the press conference--reading notes, poor color choices on the cars, inane banter with the drivers, grey suited corporate guys, etc.  (As an aside, Porsche overall could use more women in management and in their presentations--not Ferrari type glamour gals, but smart and professional women).  But let's look at the basic messages underneath it all:

    1.  Porsche is dedicated to racetrack experience/performance and everyday driving, and the GTS offers both.

    2. The new 991 is beautiful, fast and goes on sale in February.

    3.  Porsche appreciates the North American market, and is investing heavily in it.  The new centers in Atlanta and California are major commitments. (As a subtext, Porsche is investing in wellness and physical preparation for sport driving).

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

We didn't say Porsche isn't committed...the presentation just sucked.

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

I really can't see next Panamera switching to an A8 platform since its introduction falls before the next A8. Current A8 platform is basically FWD layout with torsen awd differential applied and any new iteration of the same won't fit into Porsche configuration. Only possible direction is the Audi will apply next Panamera platform and stir away from current flawed layout, becoming more RWD based (what many people want from a luxury limo).

Also, as noted above, the reason that Panamera has only 4 seats is obviously the high transmission tunnel since they wanted to keep vehicle very low to the ground and with relatively low roof height. Really doubt they would want to lose that for the next gen by adding 5th seat, as it's really something that separates the Panamera from other sedans...

Just basic logic to me at least...

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

The next gen Panamera will use a common platform with Audi and Bentley as far as we heard.

Even if the next gen A8 comes after the next gen Panamera, the platform could already exist. This doesn't say anything.

If VW and Porsche merge and everything seems to indicate that this will be happen in a way or another, they need to reduce cost substantially. Using a separate platform for the Panamera doesn't make any sense.

As to the technical details/differences of the Panamera: I'd say that 95% of the potential owners don't know anything about this car and the high tranny tunnel is a very specific feature.

    Re: Panamera GTS (L.A. debut)

don't forget - u euro's get a manual tranny on the GTS - that is a reason to get it even though a well specked GTS is close to a turbo. in north america - only PDK.

just as well as it gives me 2 reasons to not spend more money. don't want PDK & ground clearance doesn't cut winter traks to the hills.

I may be wrong but as far as I know, there is no manual for the GTS. Nowhere on this planet.  Smiley

Just as a hint for you: PDK always provides better acceleration performance than manual, especially with Sport Chrono (Plus). No exceptions.

I may be wrong but doesn't he drive in PDK auto mode ? I know that he loves PDK, he drove in auto mode with a Panamera Turbo on the Nordschleife too.
