    a little problem

OK. I'll give you guys something to sink your teeth into. I just acquired an '02 turbo--18000 mi. Feels like a brand new vehicle--evidently an elderly doctor owned it before. My only issue with it is that after a couple of hours in the car, I become aware of an old cigarette odor--stale air. I am becoming allergic to my car. Anyone have any experience with effective removal of this?

    Re: a little problem

The only best way to solve this is to use an interior cleaner such as autoglym interior shampoo which will clean the whole cockpit, this will then remove the smell which is trapped inside the carpet, seats, headlining, etc....

I'm supprised the inside isnt blackened by the smoke..

heres a link to the autogym website which has a total how to guide on car cleaning.... you may already use the autoglym stuff..

    www.autoglym.co.uk

My advice is totaly clean the inside of your car, if you have leather seats use the leather cleaner.

and you can always finnish off with the autofresh stuff which removes tobbacco oders etc...

You will think your inside a different car once you've done it.

    Re: a little problem

Whatever you do don't use anything but a lightly moist cloth on the dash... the leathers used on the dash are specially dried to take the heat and sun exposure and not shrink.

    Re: a little problem

Hey many people told me that leaving a half lemon in the car during two weeks works very well.(not a joke)

What did the former owner smoke, cigars, or cigaretttes??? I used to smoke lots of cigarettes (driver window opened)during driving, and never had any problem removing the smell.

Yes, but as a cigarette smoker, you would be unable to discern whether there was a smell or not. I have heard the piece of fruit cure. I have heard of sectioning apples and leaving them under the seats. Thank you for your suggestion though. I'm sure that before this is all over, I will have tried everything from ozone infusion to fruit salad.

    Re: a little problem

    Thanks Statman-

Those posts do seem to back up the ozone treatment, and Fabreeze product. Still looking for the best ozonator around here.

    Re: a little problem

Fabreeze works quite well if used after vacuuming every part of the inside.Do it every 2 days during a week and the situation sould be much better.

    Re: a little problem

I think that hotels use ozone to remove the cigarette smoke smell from the rooms.

and we all know how well that works

    Re: a little problem

    Info provided by Autopia-carcare.com

"Tobacco smoke is one of the most difficult smells to remove from a car. The smoke permeates everything, including the foam rubber used in seat cushions. You can successfully remove most of the tobacco smell by shampooing the carpets and upholstery with Kids & Pets Brand (www.kidsnpetsbrand.com) Stain & Odor Remover, and wiping down all other surfaces with a sponge and Kids & Pets Brand Stain & Odor Remover. After the carpet has dried for 24 hours, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, rub it in with your hands, and leave it for a week. After a week, vacuum your carpets. The baking soda will absorb the remaining odor in the carpet. Don't forget to scrub the headliner, as this is the source of a lot of the smell.

You might need to repeat the baking soda deal a couple of times, and I have even heard of cutting open the side of a box of baking soda, and with double sided tape, taping the box to the carpet under the front seats."

I also think that the headliner is one of the smelliest part of a smoker's car, so vacuum and shampoo it if you can, or find a professional cleaner who will do it right.

    Re: a little problem

If you use a good brand of in car stuff then like i say all will be well...

A few year ago a mechanic messed my drivers seat up with oil and dirt from his overhauls, i wasnt to happy about it, he said he would have cleaned it but didnt have time..

so i had to clean it off myself. as soon as i got home i brought some of the auto glym interior shampoo and with a buckrt of clean warm water to keep rinsing the cloth out...

i didnt want to leave the oil and dirt on for too long, best thing is to get it off asap!

and it got the seats up like new, and it left a really nice fresh smell to the car...

    Re: a little problem

Thanks L.Cat, I did see that one a while back on a web-search. Like any difficult problem worth solving, a multi-tiered approach is necessary. Baking soda will definitely be in my arsenal if the detailer fails--as I think it will be far superior to fruit. 911- I'm going to look for autoglym--since it did such a fine job for you.

    Re: a little problem

    not very well...

    Re: a little problem

It all depends on what your trying to remove, most interior cleaners are the same, auto glym, turtle wax, and the rest of them...

some work better than others and some may not smell too good.

i have some lexus interior cleaner which i got 2nd hand but new, and the glass cleaners ok but the interior stuff had a strong smell which i didnt like so i got the auto glym, which smells better, but any big brand names work just as good.. auto glyms bumper care we thought it was greasy and made a mess! so not all pro stuff is good!

In fact all's i can say is to try them all out, same goes for shampoos and waxes and tire gels!

i like to use turtle wax and auto glym stuff. i'll find the best product for the job!

i've just got some of turtle wax platinum car wax, which contains canuba its the first time i've used canuba wax, and from what it looks and smells like it does seem like it will do the business, i'm still waiting for the weather to pick up so i can test it out... according to the mags its rated high!

but the only truthful test it to try it yourself!
