    X5 M Recall (and possibly X6 M too...)

Just received a recall notice today for my X5 M.

Apparently the cooling liquid pump for the turbo charger(s) can cause a short circuit because of humidity penetrating the pump itself. It needs to be exchanged completely because of possible damage.

This is a two day job (if done without time pressure), so keep that in mind.

I guess that the same recall notice will be forwarded to X6 M owners too.

Those who haven't received one yet, should check with their dealers. It may not be valid for all X5 M or X6 M models but my car has been built around February/March 2010, just as a hint.

I've got the message as well. Even 4 days ago. And they wrote they will need 4 hours to fix it.
Fortunately I've the X5 in right now to fix a hail damage. So I only need to send the message to the service guy.
Furthermore I'll get the first service at 32.500 km and the winter tires. So it's a "all in one job" for BMW.

I already switched to winter tires and when I picked up the X5 M, the left rim in the rear (driver side) was damaged, it had a huge part chipped off. When I showed this to the dealer, his initial reaction was to blame me. I told him that he should check out all four rims and that he won't find a single damage on the rim and if there would be damage from hitting a boardwalk, it wouldn't be in the middle of the rim. He checked and apologized, a couple of minutes later, a guy from the repair shop confessed that the rim fell down when he carried it to the car and he didn't see the damage. Smiley I was lucky I saw it when I wanted to pick up the car.

My dealer needs two days for the job because they are very busy and the repair shop is very small. Indeed, dealer is huge but the repair facility is a joke. I told them they can keep the car for four days, they need to repair the rim too but I'm actually curious how they are going to do it because I don't allow them to take off the tire off the rim (for security reasons). I will mark the tire/rim to know if they didn't listen to me.

So far, 16500 km and not a single issue. Well...not exactly: Sometimes the rear gear doesn't engage and I have to try one or two times again (since this is electronically controlled, there may be a software issue) and sometimes, the entertainment system doesn't "recognize" my music collection, it shows the songs but doesn't play them. When I switch to CD, everything works fine but it still doesn't play mp3 or m4a files, only after I turn off the engine and turn it on again. Also very likely a software bug.

I'm a happy camper but I will very likely switch to the Cayenne Turbo S or Turbo with Powerkit and my wife takes over my lease for another year or two. Not that I don't like the X5 M, on the contrary but since I can afford only one Porsche, it has to be the daily driver.

    Re: X5 M Recall (and possibly X6 M too...)

I think you had still luck to notice the damage in time. That could have been very dangerous...Smiley

At my X5 a small crack has been found in the windshield. It must be exchanged. So it's a lot to do on the car and it will remain up Tuesday in the service. On Monday, I get the new 650i with xdrive for testing. Am very curious.Smiley

Had I already mentioned that from April 2012, all 8-cylinder BMW with 407 HP will have 450 hp? This affects the 750i, 550i, 650i etc. In addition, there will be some minor changes to the 7 series, like a small LCI.

The Cayenne Turbo S will be definitely a good choice for your needs.
At the moment I'm also looking around to find a replacement for the X5M. It musn't be a SUV. We will see....

Incedible to have some service bloke ruin a rim and not report it, very dangerous and shitty service.

We recently took our Passat to a routine check and they took over an hour to provide me with the appointed loaner car... which was an A1 enlightened located all the way across town. Since they had neither the staff nor the custome support vehicles we had to take a cab (Mercedes E-class of course) to the loaner car. I swear by the time I sat in that little Audi, the Passat check-up, which consists of some bloke plugging it into the USB, was already done waiting... Horrible service indeed! But I guess at VW this is expected.

Good luck with your X5M recall, you may want to mention those little software bugs because they tend to grow if not treated.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Thanks for the info regarding the BMW V8 power increase to 450 hp. The 550ix could become a very nice (and much cheaper) alternative to the X5M.

    Re: X5 M Recall (and possibly X6 M too...)

My dealer applied the recall fix and everything seems to be back to normal now.

However (may be interesting for X5/X6M owners): Before I left my X5M at the dealer for the recall fix, I made complaints about squeaking brakes (when driving backwards) and software problems (rear gear didn't always engage instantly and music collection on HDD sometimes didn't play at all).

BMW had a service information about the squeaking brakes, I got new brake pads on the front axle free of cost.

The other two issues, software related, were solved by updating all the car's control units (there are so many control units, I almost freaked out when I saw the printout). It took over 8 hours to update all control units, the mechanics at my dealer were going nuts because they needed the diagnose unit for other work which had to be done.

One thing was obvious from the start: The exhaust sound changed. It doesn't necessarily sound better but it is more obvious with a deeper growl. Maybe it is just subjective but I'm pretty sure about it. I also observed some minor changes in the menus of the Navi Pro system but I didn't pay attention too much.

So if you have that brake squeaking or software issues, there are fixes available.

    Re: X5 M Recall (and possibly X6 M too...)

Well, that's a pretty good info. I know the procedure of updating the control units very well as they have done this on my car 1 year ago to fix an issue on the dynamic drive. But nothing else seems to be changed. If you really got a deeper growl on the exhaust I need to bring the car in again. :-)

I saw the print out, more than 20(!) control units were updated, I stopped counting them since the list was huge.

The Navi Pro update has also some improvements, like for example starting a conference call or dialing digits when talking to somebody (I'm pretty sure it wasn't there before...there are small icons allowing to choose during conversation). Also the rear gear engages instantly, I don't have to try over and over again until it does. The squeaking of the brakes also saved me money for new brake pads in the front... Smiley It also appears that the music collection display shows now more data about the song but I'm not really sure about this.

    Re: X5 M Recall (and possibly X6 M too...)

I used to have a lot fun updating E60 M5's control units.  After a while it becomes quite addictive to update to the new software.indecision  But, dealer engineers hate it because it takes hours out of their work bench.

It really feels like a different car each time they updated to the new version of the software.  The most noticeable difference was that SMG needed to re-learn the shift pattern as well as engine note difference, new/improved navi functions, etc.

It's quite amazing how these modern cars are designed, especially in BMW's case (each control by modules).
