    2011 Indian F1 Grand Prix

After today's race in South Korea, the next race in 2 weeks' time is the inaugural Indian F1 Grand Prix.

It should be a very big event for Sahara Force India, Karun Chandok, Narain Karthikeyan.

I hope everything is ready in time Smiley

Very few fans in Yeongam ... that was very disappointing but it shouldn't be a problem at all in Delhi. Lots of people will want to attend out of national pride, an interest in motor sports and to sample the glitz and glamour of F1. Should be great :)

The drivers had better not eat too many spicy curries during the race weekend .... hopefully, there will be good toilet facilities there SmileySmiley

Looking forward to F1 in Delhi .... Indian style Smiley

Somehow, I doubt that. It's a poverty stricken country with no F1 and motorsport pedigree or tradition. Only if the admission fee is ludicrously low, will there be any significant attendance.

India is not as poverty stricken country as you may think....sure there are lots of poor people but there are also enough people with money that can fill up the inagural F1 event.

Delhi belly for the drivers may be a potential problem though angry

Re: 2011 Indian F1 Grand Prix

    +1 kiss

India may have hundreds of millions who live in poverty - but it also has hundreds of millions in its middle class. In fact, it has one of the biggest middle class populations of any single country on the planet.

Some of the richest business magnates are from India ... some of the most expensive real estate in the world is in Mumbai and Delhi.

1.2 billion people ... living in the largest democracy in the world where English is one of the official languages. English language newspapers in India are read by more people than in any other country in the world.

India has nuclear weapons, its own space programme, a massive IT industry and infrastructure being built on a vast scale right now.

Just pause for a moment to digest what this means. And all this has been achieved since only 1947 when the British left.

The only thing is that India's problems are also on an equally large scale too.

BTW India wouldn't even break a sweat to pay off Greece's entire public and private debt.

A $400 million circuit. Performances from Lady Gaga and Metallica. All tickets almost sold out except for some corporate boxes that sell for between $70k and $210k.

More worryingly, they still haven't figured out why it was so bad. Not looking good for 2012 unless things improve dramatically over the winter.

Adrian Newey fears RBR will not enjoy the same advantage once the exhaust gas blown diffuser is outlawed in 2012. Somehow I doubt it. The team, over the past 2.5 years, is always one step ahead of the rest.

Re: 2011 Indian F1 Grand Prix

Remember our little discussion the other day? 1/3rd of the tickets unsold. Not really a success then...

The inaugural Indian Grand Prix is set to receive a crowd of over 80,000 people, race organisers have confirmed ahead of Sunday's showpiece.

Although the capacity of the new Buddh circuit is 120,000, it is still hoped that more tickets will be sold at a discounted rate in order to further fill the circuit.

"We have sold close to 80,000 tickets which is pretty encouraging considering that its the first F1 race ever in the country," confirmed a spokesman for race promoter Jaypee. "Of course we would have been happier had we sold off 90 per cent tickets because ticket sales are the only source of revenue for us. But there are still a few days to go and we are keeping our fingers crossed."

Meanwhile, drivers and teams have offered mixed reaction after landing in preparation for the weekend's racing.

"I had a bit of a feeling that the Indians didn't really want to see us," Virgin driver Timo Glock told Germany's T-Online. "I hope the fans take us closer to the heart than the local immigration authorities did."

It also emerged that fellow German Nico Rosberg was initially denied entry to India and Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen added that the entry process was unnecessarily complicated.

"I had to fill in about 70 pages of paperwork. It's unreal how complicated it was," he said.

Some favours... they used Webber today to test the performance of the hard tires during the race so as to know when was best for Vettel to come in to the pit to put them on. Cost Webber the podium finish. You'd think that with Vettel having won already they would at least not do this stuff to webber anymore rolleyes.gif

Re: 2011 Indian F1 Grand Prix

Kudos to the Indians for putting on a great show, great track and not-too-bad race. I predict this will be an increasingly important stop on the tour.

For some reason, Speed's programming indicated the race was only an hour and a half long, so on the 38th lap the race was over for me.

But look at how this went, with Button five to ten seconds ahead of the pack and then Vettel a similar distance in front of him. And then the rest scrambling for 3rd. Spectacular race by Vettel to be that much faster than Button who was that much faster than anyone else.

Re: 2011 Indian F1 Grand Prix

@John H, @Carrageous; thanks guys, I'm touched. Sadly, I suffered a bereavement in my family 10 days ago so I haven't really felt like posting.

I did watch qualification and the race. Another perfect weekend from start to finish for Vettel. Button was the only driver in the same race as Vettel. IMO Jenson has silenced all those critics who thought his title victory in 2009 was a fluke or that he would suffer joining 'Hamilton's team'. Alonso drove well but his car was just not good enough. Webber's form is just worsening IMO. Hamilton v Massa has become predictable and dull. They have both been childish and foolish IMHO. Schumi and Rosberg both had a good race. IMO Alguersuari has emerged as the better of the 2 Toro Rosso drivers. Perez has consistently outshone Kobayashi despite being a rookie. Force India has a dilemma: Sutil gets a few points each race but has plateau'd IMO whereas Di Resta has more potential for the future. Who to keep? Hulkenberg v Di Resta could be a combustible pairing of young guys.

I thought India put on a good show. The track looks great. The facilities looked perfectly adequate. Hopefully, they will keep on improving them. The crowds looked enthusiastic and quite numerous to me. I expect it will just take time for F1 to capture the imagination of India's more affluent population. I don't expect it will attract the poorer population that simply cannot afford admission. They are crazy about cricket anyway.

Sorry to hear that, Easy. Our thoughts are with you.

I agree with your thoughts and I love that Jensen has emerged this season as an antidote to the Vettel steamroller. With all props to Seb -- we're truly witnessing the maturing of a great champion -- the best race of the season was Jenson's incredible win in Montreal. Without him -- and without Hamilton's woes -- this would have be a lot less interesting of a season.

Re: 2011 Indian F1 Grand Prix

It's interesting to point out that SV acheived his fastest lap on the 60th lap of the race with his KERS turned off and engine turned down. This guy and the RB7 in his hands are just from another world.

We are really witnessing something rare in here...

Most everyone did their fastest lap on the last lap because that's when they have an empty fuel tank.

My point wasn't that 60th lap but the way he did it. Otherwise, he had his laps in pink for 90% of the race. I was following the live timing as well...
