    Gnil:

The only reason I can see to that is that they are not happy with the result so far and will not be able to get it right by the time the 991 GT3 is launched.   The fact that normally they had planed to have only PDK on the Carrera shows what direction gear boxes are going. So it is only a matter of time untill manual gear boxes are droped. That also probably means less and less devopment and attention will be put into the manual gear box.

As to the Targa : It is a great moove to go back to the old look, as the actual ones are so unactractive .

That makes a lot of sense Smiley

Porsche Chooses Pirelli P Zero for New 911
(If this has already been posted you have my apologies.)
"There are cars and there are cars, so when Pirelli developed tires for the new Porsche 911, one set of technologies just wouldn't do.
So, two different compounds of Pirelli P Zero were specially developed for the new Porsche 911 Carrera that debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week in sizes 245/35ZR20 front and 295/30ZR20 rear).
The P Zero not only brings significant grip, it also enhances the aerodynamics of the car, says the company.
The latest tread compounds were specially designed for the new Porsche 911; the rear features Kevlar. The rear tire gives the Porsche maximum lateral grip, excellent stability even at high speed and greater precision when driving, thus eliminating the risk of oversteer or degradation of the tire itself. The front tire compound contains special nano-composites whose longitudinal and side action provides excellent grip and a marked improvement in cornering and lateral thrust.
The P Zero tread was specially developed by Pirelli engineers with side blocks featuring optimized sipe depth, thereby notably reducing noise emissions in compliance with European Union regulations.
Porsche has also chosen Pirelli for the 911 Carrera Turbo variant, to be launched over the coming months. The supercar will be fitted with the P Zero 245/35ZR20 on the front and 305/30ZR20 on the rear."

Interesting, inspite of all the rumors in that regard, he says no PDK on the 991 GT3?

Classic targa looks for the 991 targa... that will be interesting to see how they can manage that.

That could be true about the manual, for most manufactrers at least, not Porsche. Like Porsche said, if the customer continues to demand a manual, they will offer one. While PDK cars make up a huge market much larger than the manuals, there is still demand for the manual. So Porsche is capitalising on that, and further developing the manual to make the advantages the PDK has over it smaller.

Also interesting that 7th can only be slecected sequentially from 5th or 6th.

Thanks for the pictures! The car seems to feature the -20mm sport suspension with more prominent front lip.

BTW, Carrara White 991CS is with optional PDCC/SPASM-you can see new extended front lip and 10mm lower suspension in comparison to yellow 991 which is with standard PASM suspension.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

That white car looks good!  I guess the lower ride height and front lip makes it look more agressive too.

Btw, anyone else having issue with security certificate from the Rennteam site update?

II hope the coming Targa comes in the wide- body models also.

In the late 80s, the wide body Targa looked " widest " of the coupe/Targa/cab body styles because the hoop seemed to visually pinch- in the tumblehome and really accentuated the rear fender haunches right behind it .

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Some more shots taken near San Diego apparently. The new Boxster and Cayman are also in this convoy so I assume Porsche must be going for maximum publicity by driving around conspicuously like this.

I agree , every manufacturer now  seems to run  publicity convoys of these " mules"  - yeah , right  -  ( Boxsters/Cayman  in the case of these photos )  , in stop and go traffic in some of it's biggest markets .  Remember all the 997.2s " mules " running around leafy parts of west LA a few yrs ago ?

Car company marketing people have used the internet car buff boards to put many of the legendary " spy shot " photographers out of business. They even invite journalists 6- 12 mos before official unveilings to come along and test drive and publish photos and driving impressions  of the partly disguised prototypes , like they did for the 991 early  this year.

Damn, that is about five miles from my house. They are entering an area known as University City which is home to a large shopping mall.

To be honest, but for the convoy I am not so sure I would have recognized it was a 991.Smiley

The new 7 speed manual is not better and has not norrowed the gap between manual and PDK ( unless you talk about fuel saving ) The 7th speed is there only to lower fuel consuption . They also use parts of the PDK box to make the manual.....I see this  as money and engeneering savings, then making the gear box better.

And as to custumer demand , just ask your dealer how many manual he sells. Over here it must be about 10 % max. So, I'm afraid, customer demand will not weight much pretty soon.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

But, thats exactly what I mean when I say they're further developing the manual transmission. Just by adding a 7th gear shows they care. All other manufactures are ditching the manual altogether, Porsche is investing in it. I think could increase their sales slightly in the future, when 99% of all sportscars are paddleshifts, Porsche will still offer a manual, and all the hardcore enthusasts will tuen to them.

I wonder if he's just playing a game with semantics, since the next GT3 has been reported to use a more sporty automated gearbox called PDK-S.

I agree that Porsche will keep the manual as long as possible and does care about the customer demand . But I am not sure it will last . I even think that keeping the manual could in the future be a handicap as engines/transmissions will need more and more to be run by softwears in order to keep up with emissions regulations and performance. With manual it is now not possible. The 7 th gear is there only so that they apply to emission regulations.

Now unless they  manage to develop a new form of manual, which would be fantastic , that can mix mecanic and electronics ..Smiley
