Beautiful 98 993 4S - now to fix the sound

After years of looking around, I'm proud to announce I'm now the very proud owner of a glacier white 1998 model 4S. It's a stunning example with only 18,500 km recently purchased from a Porsche dealership in Germany. I pick it up later this month and will definitely post pics as soon as I have it.

The only problem is that the stereo originally fitted (Becker CDR-21) no longer works. The dealer has offered to install a CDR-22 unit in it's place. I would be grateful for any feedback on the following questions:

    1) is there a noticeable difference in the sound quality between the CDR-21 and CDR-22?

    2) this car is original in every way (original paintwork, no accidents, no dodgy after market add-ons etc). I'd like to keep it authentic. Would installing a CDR-22 compromise this even though Porsche themselves did retrofit some 993's with the CDR-22/CDR-220? (http://www.pcarworkshop.com/images/8/86/Becker_retrofit_II_2001_69061.pdf)

    3) I'd like to be able to use my iPhone as a satnav as well be able to listen to music from it's iPod library. The advantage of using the iPhone is that I don't need to install any visible after market add-ons that would compromise the authenticity of the 993. I've discovered a product that claims to work with both units and can be discretly installed with only a simple cable visible that the iPhone can be attached to (http://www.solisto.de/en/caraudio). Does anyone have any experience with the Solisto solution or any other product?

Thanks in advance for all your input Smiley

Sadly I have no answers on your questions, but congrats on finding such a pristine example of the most beautiful of 993's! Very much looking forward to seeing pictures of it!

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

Here's a very shaky video of it close up (I had just taken it for a test drive and was stil shaking from the adreniline rush!)

    IMG_0389.MOV

I'll post a video of it in action soon so we can all revel in the amazing sound of that air cooled flat six!

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

Wonderful - many congrats - I'm really looking forward to seeing the photos

I wonder how anyone could have parted with it - if I had one, it would be a keeper!

PS: sorry I can't answer your questions ... I would be prepared to fit a more modern stereo though ... keeping it authentic or nearly authentic is fine but you need to enjoy it too

Beautiful car!  Was it de-badged from the factory also?

Will installing a new unit make it tough to put the old (broken) one back in when/if you decide to sell the car?  Do you intend to show the car a concourses?

I personally would not worry about changing out the original stereo.  But that's just me.

You could also look around for a used (removed) CDR-21, and see if the dealer would put that in.

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

Looks magnificent! What a great find. Enjoy!

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

Awesome, enjoy it! Guess I saw that car available a few weeks ago as well, there´s currently a silver one with low kilometers available as well.

Is the old radio completely broken? Get it replaced and take the old one as well, as I assume the radio was delivered with the car (including all manuals, radio pass etc.), I would not dismiss it entirely. There should be some repairshops that can fix the issue.

Wow, what a find!! I love that car, especially in white.. Whatever its history, it didn't drive enough.. to your benefit

    Looking forward to pics

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

Congratulations on buying a great car.  I'm not sure why you're even thinking about the hi-fi - just switch it off and listen to the engine!  Smiley

(BTW I'm only half-joking, I can't remember the last time I switched on the radio in my 911).

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

Congrats, the 993 is an amazing car.

Regarding the Radio, Porsche now offers a Nav/Radio with display in the same style as the original radio. You even have bluetooth. In my 993 (sold now) I installed a Becker (same design as the original Porsche radio) with NAV and bluetooth telephone an iPod connection. Looks great and works excellent.

I can only say I'm happy I don't have to worry about kids school fees as it wasn't a bargain......but what can do when you see, hear, smell and drive such a thing of beauty?! ;-)

    Hi cincy,

Thanks! no, installing either the new or old unit shouldn't be an issue as long as the brackets and cage are kept. No intentions to concourse as I'm simply too lazy to spend my weekend polishing the engine with a toothbrush Smiley

However, I have been approached by a magazine that wants to rent it for a fashion shoot. I will, of course, have to personally check each of the models to make sure they compliment my new obsession Smiley Smiley

I was never a fan of white to be honest but when I saw it in the flesh.....WOW! every contour of that amazing body is highlighted. Looking forward to taking some pics and sharing them with you all.

    Hi Ferdie,

Thank you! Indeed, that is the dealership. They normally get 4 - 5 good examples in every year. The silver one you mentioned has a boxster red interior which is very bright and not really my taste. Having said that, I'm sure they'll sell it soon.

Not sure what's wrong with the original radio but they've agreed to fit another unit of my choice as part of the purchase.

    Pictures to follow Smiley

Thank you! The best part is buying it from a Porsche dealership as you get all the guarantees and the Porsche Classic Card (useful in case it ever breaks down).

Pics definitely to follow. In fact, I've just had a thought. I'll ask the fashion photographer to take some high res B+W pics Smiley

    Hi 993Targa,

Would you happen to have the model number of the unit? I can look into it. Thanks.

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

At risk of sounding stupid here, but is that a 993 steering wheel..? It seems to look out of place / too modern for the rest of the interior as if it were a 996 one...? Maybe it's the flashgun..? Weren't the 993's still 4 spoke, square designs?

The 1998 993 models came with a 3 spoke as standard.

What a beauty! White's such a great color for that car.

No good question. It's a 996 wheel, it looks grey on the pics (flash) but was black in real life. I replaced the 993 wheel (kept the original) also added  the (removable) aluminum parts to lighten up the otherwise very dark interior.

I guess this is also why I sold it. I love the 993 and still do, but I'm not a classic car driver. Let me explain this. I drove the 993 hard and also used it for longer trips CH-NL. The car was a 96, so was 13 years old and that was starting to show. It's just not a modern car anymore.

I sold it to a Porsche collector for a bit more than I paid buying it from an official Porsche dealer four years before.

Thanks for clarifying.  I presume that this picture is of 993Targa's car, not Moose's new car.  But Moose commented that the steering wheel was indeed a 1998 993 3-spoke standard wheel.  Moose, if you're car has this wheel, I would change it back to the 4 spoke - it really looks out of place to me (IMO)...

BTW Moose - I got around to watching your video clip.  Your car is truly beautiful - the 993 is just so awesome.  Now if Singer would use the 993 (in addition to the 964) in their re-builds, and sell them at 1998 prices, you'd all have to make an orderly queue behind me.Smiley

It was my 993 Targa. Again I liked it very much and if I'm correct last 993 models had the 996 steering wheel. Here is a better picture (not my car) how it looked like.

Ah, it was the flashgun.  Now that all the colours are balanced it looks fine.  But I think I still prefer the more retro square one with the rest of the dash...

I also have the 3 spoke steering wheel and I quite like it as it doesn't look as bulky as the 4 spoke version (I wonder if it's smaller in diameter too?). However, the main reason for keeping it is that all 98 models came with this steering wheel.

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed

Thanks to everyone for your great comments. I've decided to go for the CDR-22(0) unit and keep the original too in the attic ;-). I should pick it up towards the end of the month and hope to post pics at the beginning of October!

    Re: 98 993 4S hifi help needed
