New 987S arrives

Well the car has arrived at my dealer and the side stripe kit and front splitters from the Boxster spyder have been fitted. We collect it on September 1st but here are a few pics from today prior to the car being detailed. The Exclusive Dept. forgot to stitch the lid of the storage bin in white so a replacement will be supplied under warranty.

I got a fantastic deal on ordering this car which was simply too good to pass on so will wait a couple of years now before buying the new model Boxster.

The spec is as follows -

Carrara white with full black leather interior

Comfort package

Infotainment package

Design package

PDK

Sports steering wheel with paddles

Park assist

Heated seats

Sport chrono package

Instrument dials in carrara white

Carrara white sport chrono timer

Rear section of centre console in exterior colour

Seat belts in Guards red

Steering wheel rim with deviating stitching (white)

Door finishers in leather

Aluminium II handbrake lever with deviating stitching in white

Lid of storage bin in alcantara - black, contrast stitching in white

Door finishers in alcantara - black, contrast stitching in white

Seat inlays in alcantara - black, contrast stitching in white

Stitching of dashboard/seats/centre console/door trims in deviating colour, white

Very nice, are you also considering the Spyder´s suspension? I see you didn´t go for the sport seats, any particular reason for that?

It's my other half's car Ferdie and she isn't keen on the sports seats and prefers the comfort of the standard ones. Also if I'd spec'ed the sports seats I'd have also had to pay to have the backs painted Carrara white as I eliminated all traces of the Volcano grey paint in the interior. She also didn't want firmer suspension so the car will stay standard.

She loves the spyder but couldn't be bothered with the hassle of it's roof for a daily driver so this spec gives her 80% of the look of that car.

I'm surprised that they deliver the car with the storage lid not stitched as ordered... there must be some sort of quality control?

As a happy Boxster S PDK owner all I can say is "Congratulations!". Beautiful stitching. I am a big fan of the alcantara seat inlays - warmer in winter, cooler in summer.

And the Boxster ist the perfect car to enjoy sunny days

But again great specs!

Unlike Ferrari where there is ONE code for deviating stitching, Porsche has about a million codes for a million different stitching parts. So the QC guy probably figured he ordered the car that way.

The most common 'forgotten' stitching part is the little piece between the vertical center stack and the center console, right in front of the manual shift boot.9 cars out of 10 with deviating stitching missed that part.

There were 5 separate codes on the order to cover the stitching and we even added (at the suggestion of the helpful lady in the ordering dept. at Porsche GB ) an over rider at the end of the order in bold lettering confirming that all stitching was to be in white to leave no ambiguity for the factory. That evidently went unnoticed though. I'm amazed that when the car reached QC at the end of the process that nobody said "That's odd. Why have one Exclusive item in standard charcoal stitch?" then went and double checked the order.

I'm just glad they got it wrong on an item that is easily switched out. Had it been the dash for example that would have been far more of an issue.

I keep wondering how a supposedly quality-conscious company can perform such stunts. They celebrate 25 years of Exclusive orders and cannot get the stitching right. I agree it is a formidable attempt to select each deviated stitching individually but keep asking myself if, as you said, an overriding code would include all relevant items at once.

Nonetheless, great car!

I remember seeing a picture of a 911 with 3 different colors of stitching inside, someone order it that way on purpose. So I guess Porsche QC doesn't really check stitching colors because of the way Porsche organizes the stitching option. Maybe they think you are another crazy people who like more than one color for interior stitching.

IMO the factory will follow codes only - so it's essential to have all the right codes. IMO the extra wording/explanation just doesn't make a difference on the ordering computer.

Also, since a BMW dealer once forgot to order the correct steering wheel on a 3 series I once bought, I have never trusted a dealer's word when he says that 'those are the only codes you need' or 'I ordered the codes you wanted'.

Luckily, that 4 spoke multi-function steering wheel was easily replaced with a 3 spoke sports multi-function steering wheel. The dealer tried avoiding responsibility for his error but I didn't let him get away with it.

In the case of Porsche, I called Porsche Exclusive in Stuttgart just to make doubly sure that I had all the correct codes.

And then I got the print out from the ordering computer to see those codes written in black and white and to make sure they had been correctly entered into the ordering system.

I stopped trusting dealers' attention to detail a long time ago.

easy,

I have all of the print outs of the order. The dealer I use is excellent and his attention to detail is spot on. He was paranoid about ensuring all of the stitching was correct and went through the order several times to ensure it was all covered. You don't actually get a code for stitching but get an order number for each relevant item instead which is listed under a Z-Offers section. The option codes only relate to the chosen item not it's colour or stitching colour.

It's not a show stopper and is easily replaced under warranty so won't spoil the car

Even if, for example, the dashboard was done wrongly you could always reject the car and ask for a new one or your money back. Isn't the law like that?
