     Beyond words...

I don't like the duck-tail on 991. The front spoiler is not so nice either. I would prefer in classic way. The new shape of the 991 design is timeless, IMO.

       I like it!!

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

I know, I didn't like it either at first, but it looks incredible IRL.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    Painted techno wheels are gorgeous!
    Ducktail looks cool!

There's an even more aggressive spoiler correct? The cup one I believe.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Those wheels are great. I even like the duck tail, but that front is just not on. I much prefer the "normal" new front.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

It looks much better with the aluminium window surrounds IMHO even on platinum silver as per this display car. I like the ducktail but would prefer it with the standard front bumper as opposed to the revised aero kit one.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Here is the official Press Release from the IAA. Sorry I have it available in german language only.

Maybe useful nonetheless as the doc contains some self explaining  tables with tech data / comparison vs. 997 etc. Smiley

    porsche_911_carrera_2012[1].pdf

    Interesting:

They saved 95 kg on the car's body, which means they must have added 60 kg (50 kg) elsewhere compared to the 997 Carrera (Carrera S) Smiley

Table with gear ratios (manual/PDK) is also interesting (shows "long" 3rd gear as mentioned in the latest Autobild Article).

[...] 3rd gear is geared very long yet 7th geared very short (indeed, that´s what is written).

    Thank you, PJ!

Very insightful details, for example the gearing that was described in the AutoBild article above only refers to the difference to the PDK box. Obviously, the gearratios of both are the same except for 3rd gear, which is geared longer, and 7th gear, which is a tad shorter, in comparison.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

That's wrong, Porsche wouldn't be stupid enough to gear 3rd longer than 7th. 7th is the overdrive, not 3rd. I think you guys are getting confused. 3rd has a 1.55, and 7th a .71. 7th is a much longer gear.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Sorry, you understood me wrong. In the AutoBild article further above Georg Kacher stated that the manual gearbox would receive a fairly long 3rd and a short 7th gear. In absolute terms, this is not correct.

The manual gearbox has a 3rd gear that is geared longer yet a shorter 7th compared to the PDK gearbox. The article gave the impression that 7th gear on the manual would be fairly short and geared for performance which clearly is not the case.

Making 3rd gear longer is not a benefit - it'll make the car accelerate slower in an important range.  I sure wish there was a Sport gearing option (like on the Lotus Evora), where all the gears are low and closer together with top speed occurring at 7,400rpm (power peak) in 7th gear.  Maybe with the next GT3...

Fully agree with you, Grant Smiley Question is, why they made the 3rd gear for the manual gearbox longer (compared to the PDK) Smiley I smell marketing BS - it may help to sell more PDK cars Smiley

@ Ferdie: indeed the text in the AB article is misleading - it wouldn't have made any sense the way they wrote it Smiley

But I cannot be sure if the default is: Carrera (S) or 911 Carrera (S)

Default is "911 Carrera (S)". The confusion arises from the fact that the first catalogue etc we had available indeed did not contain 911 (like I posted somewhere), but apperantly, someone changed their mind on this.

According to today´s FAZ article about the new 991, it was Porsche CEO Matthias Müller himself who ordered the 911 designation on every model.

That was my assumption as well. I am not fully aware how the fuel consumption cycles are performed but believe that a considerable portion is driven in 3rd gear on a manual whereas the automated systems are free to choose the appropriate gear.

Couldn´t imagine the AB article to be that misleading but since it is I wanted to clarify my above post.

Good to know that at Porsche it works exactly as in other big companies: the CEO takes care of the really important decisions himself Smiley

Yes, I agree that it's just a marketing issue - what a shame...

I understand that Porsche wanted to bring the "911" designation back after some 30 years. But OTOH they didn't want to drop the established "Carrera" designation which sounds very good and  is written in a successful font. The end result is too much though.

I would order the car with only the PORSCHE name and add the Carrera S (only) at the dealer.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Does the Duck Tail lift upwards when reaches certain speed?  with the photo of interior does have the lifting button on the top right corner...

I think its cool, but lifting the duck tail would make it looks very odd wouldn't it??

Is this GT-silver or arctic ?

Arctic silver is discontinued. Due to the lights the colour looks close to Platinum but judging by the other pictures from the presentation this seems to be GT silver.

IMO choice is good ... but, personally, on a Carrera/Carrera S, I prefer the rear slope to be uninterrupted by a duck tail
