Ferrari shows New Customization Program Featuring Special California

Ferrari shows New Customization Program Featuring Special California

At a secret event, Ferrari showed off it's new customization program to cater to the needs of those requiring the above and beyond. Our sources tell us we wouldn't believe the level of customizing that can now be ordered directly from the Italian coach-builder, basically a you dream it we build it program similar to what we have come to love from Porsche's exclusive department. The special Matte Blue California showcased is a one off created for Lapo Elkan, The New York–born heir to the Fiat fortune. More details and an official release from Ferrari is surely close behind.

     Ok well ...

At least now you know you can get the leather combination you always wanted but weren't sure the Atelier could do.

Oh who am I kidding, all of the above are hideous

This Lapo Elkann is supposed to be a stylish guy, but this is really bad... or maybe we don't have any sense for style

I agree and think it's a step too far in the taste stakes. Perhaps the factory are looking long term and see a potential business opportunity to take a lot of these cars back in under the Classiche banner for reupholstering and repainting to more traditional colours. I can see a lot of dealers needing such a service if/when some of these more way out cars come back onto the used market.

Re: Ferrari shows New Customization Program Featuring Special California

No wonder the whole event was a secret.

Looks like something out of a Hamman and Co convention. Anyway, guys over here will go mad for this kind of rubbish

Can you believe that Vanity Fair named him one of the best dressed men in the world!! Even Tom Ford himself called him the chicest man in the world Smiley

Re: Ferrari shows New Customization Program Featuring Special California

If this guy rang the doorbell of my home, I would never let him in. I couldn't care less if he is the heir to the FIAT empire.

Today's celebrity culture is all well and good and other people may take their style cues from them ... but that doesn't mean they have taste even if they have piles of money.

I think Ferrari was just trying to show that anything is now possible. However I'm pretty sure that more than a handful of customers are going to come up with some very expensive ways to destroy some very nice looking cars

Re: Ferrari shows New Customization Program Featuring Special California

Interesting. I had always assumed that this level of customization was always possible for those with deep pockets.  Money has never been a guarantor of taste, in any era. It's just that bad taste is more public now than in previous times.

That is just plain fugly.  At what point does a sports car stop being a sports car and become a (tasteless) lounge?  Smiley

I guess money doesn't buy taste.

How does a luxury car manufacturer build one of its cars to look like a traveling whore house? Have they no dignity? Is money the sole consideration? This is really sad.Smiley

Re: Ferrari shows New Customization Program Featuring Special California

Personal customisation is the new area to make big profits for high end manufacturers. It's very fashionable just now to express your own style and people are prepared to pay to get what they want. You can see it with interior design, clothes etc etc. Car manufacturers have been slow to get on board but most have now woken up to just how much money there is to be made for something that requires no additional expensive homologation or crash testing etc. MINI led the way and Fiat have followed with the new 500 making a heap of profit from giving people a range of options that allows a car to be tailored specially for them. Ferrari through their Atelier programme and Lamborghini with the Ad Personam operation are simply taking it to another level.

Porsche must surely be looking to expand their Exclusive operation which is currently very poorly marketed IMHO. I've added a fair bit of Exclusive trimming options to our new Boxster S due next week but that was down to me requesting various items, not being actively sold them by my dealer. I was reading a review of the Cayman S in Autocar's "Our Cars" section last week which they have put on long term test. The driver of the car was commenting on the fact that the Cayman cannot be ordered with alcantara seat inserts which he said was a pity as they would give more grip and stop him sliding during fast cornering. This perfectly illustrates my point as they are available as an option if you ask.

Re: Ferrari shows New Customization Program Featuring Special California

Iain I have no problem with allowing customers customize their new cars so long as there are controls that protect the brand. Granted, taste is subjective but Ferrari need not be a participant in allowing color schemes or options which belittle the brand. Money is no object mantra must take a backseat to refinement and elegance at the factory.
