    Button Targetted by Ferrari...

Former Formula One champion Jenson Button is being targeted by Ferrari as the perfect partner for double world champion Fernando Alonso.

    - 0

The harmony within the McLaren squad was disrupted at the Canadian Grand Prix despite Button's incredible victory in the rain.

Fellow Briton Lewis Hamilton looked to overtake his team-mate and ended up striking the wall and a pit board.

And the Scuderia are now reported to be lining up a move for the 2009 champion.

"There has been a lot of talk within Ferrari about getting Button. They have already checked to see if he would be available," a Ferrari source told the News of the World.

"The team realise they need a stronger partner for Fernando Alonso than Felipe Massa if they want to win the title again.

"They've seen Jenson prove at McLaren that he can consistently win or get on to the podium."

Button, 31, had not won a grand prix for over a year before coming from the back of the grid to triumph in the Montreal marathon.

However Brazilian Massa, who came within a whisker of beating Hamilton to the 2008 title, has not been the same racer since a horrific injury at the Hungarian GP in 2009 - and Button is known for his consistency and ability to drive in any conditions and preserve tyres.

Button stands second in the drivers' championship, 60 points behind Sebastian Vettel who he overtook on the final lap to win in Canada. Hamilton is fourth and Alonso fifth.

His three-year, £18 million deal with McLaren finishes at the end of next season - at the same time as Massa's Ferrari contract. The News of the World claims that he would pick up a cool £30m for three years in Italy.

Hamilton is rumoured to be considering Red Bull and Mercedes for 2013, which would leave Button as the undisputed lead driver.

Alonso is the focus of Ferrari's operation, but the incorporation of a relaxed personality such as Button would enable them to race one another without back-biting.

The Spaniard's time at McLaren alongside Hamilton saw the duo engaged in a year-long feud.

Three years ago, with Honda's time in F1 coming to an end - and before Ross Brawn took over the team and led it to drivers' and teams' titles - Button was unable to even get a test drive with the Prancing Horse.

Very credible IMO, and certainly better than Massa

In the 90s I heard that Ferrari does not provide any of his model as company cars, however Ferrari employees can purchase them at a "before-tax" price.  Not sure if it is true anymore? Smiley

    Re: Button Targetted by Ferrari...

Well, how would that work out in real life? Would Alonso be able to tolerate a driver next to him that is equally good or maybe better than him? I thought he was renowned for refusing to play the second violin...

Also, Button seems to be really relaxed, and does not shy away from admitting when he's made a mistake, whereas Alonso always seems to be pointing at other people (personal perception, other people may see that differently), so it would be interesting to see how those two will work in one team...

    Re: Button Targetted by Ferrari...

If I were in JB's shoes, I would stay at McLaren. McLaren has produced a better car in 2011 than Scuderia Ferrari and, with all the senior management changes at Ferrari, there will still be some time before the dust settles from those changes and before Ferrari can start to catch up with the competition.

Also, JB went to McLaren amid much criticism that he was going to Hamilton's team. But it worked out fine because LH wasn't a bad team mate towards him BUT crucially it seems that McLaren kept their word: they treated JB and LH as equals. Two former world champions in the team who both respect each other.

I also think the fact that they are both British in a British team means there is an easier cultural understanding between all parties.

If JB goes to Ferrari, sure, it would be a dream come true to drive for the most glamorous team in F1, BUT that teams revolves around its lead driver who is unquestionably Alonso. Massa was humiliated at Hockenheim in 2010 and the same can, and probably will, happen to JB if Alonso can impose his domination once again.

Ferrari does not treat its drivers as equals. Schumi was leader, Barrichello was the lieutenant. The same goes for Alonso and Massa.

IMO JB is being chased by Ferrari just to ensure the second car gets more points to help win the Constructors' title.

If JB thinks he can go there, beat Alonso and turn the tables on him (like he has done to LH at McLaren), then JB may find that the factors that made this role reversal possible at McLaren do not exist at Ferrari. But JB is a quietly determined guy who may find the temptation of this challenge irresistible.

I also think he realises that the chance to drive for Scuderia Ferrari doesn't come around too often ... will he take the bait?

However, if he stays at McLaren and LH leaves for Red Bull, JB will effectively be the lead driver at McLaren.

These are interesting times ... all brought on by the sheer dominance of RBR. Drivers are ready to leave their long-cherished teams to further their hopes of another title ... but this is nothing new in F1.

I don't agree wirh that he will be worse off in Ferrari as far as teamates go, Hamilton is just as alfa male as Alonso, furthermore, Alonso would not crash his teamate off the track like H did this last weekend on JB, doubt JB is happy to have H as a teamate, its just that JB is such a calm and well maneted guy that is won't ever show. Neither has he had equal chances in McLaren, lets no forget about the lets-save-fuel incident, McLaren team is just an expert at hiding it and subterfuges.

@ Ziggy: Jensen won't need a company car, I think he'll be able to buy any car he fancies.

@ Easy: I agree, Jensen has a winning car, to which the Scuderia isn't even close this year. For all the glamour of Ferrari, which would be a nice place to go if you were ready to slide down the backside of your career, I think he wants to be a winner.

And he'll need the faster car to do that. As well as a team that doesn't put him second.

    Re: Button Targetted by Ferrari...

I think he should stay at McLaren because lately Ferrari is struggling to build competitive cars.

There is no try. Just do.

    Re: Button Targetted by Ferrari...

I never liked McLaren as a team, and since I do like JB, i think he should go to Ferrari. He certainly could aid the team build a better car and then outperform Alonso on a regular basis.

Agreed ! I like JB as a driver and I'm a Ferrari fan at heart so I'd enjoy to see him in the Scuderia very much.
