The numbers are not related to engine size - it' supposed to be in numerical order of design studies, but they cheat a little bit now and then.  As you surmised, they are currently trying to prolong the 900 series as long as possible.

These are factory code names only.. really they could make a 991 in the future that is some front-engined V10 or something. The code names are all officially the 911 series and are simply internal codes for the generations... I know that 993 was chosen because the last air-cooled 911 came out in 1993, hence a new generation the 993 was born.

    2012 Porsche 911 Spy Video...

"Easily one of the most anticipated cars of the year, the brand new 2012 Porsche 911 is set to be unveiled in front of audiences at this September’s 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. However, you don’t have to wait until then to get a feel for how the new car will look on the road, or at the track, as this exclusive spy video shows a prototype with only minimal camouflage gear.

The video shows the base 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera model, both in Coupe and Cabriolet bodystyles, testing at Germany’s Nurburgring circuit.

The new car looks very similar to its predecessor but it sits much lower and appears to be slightly wider too. As for engine, this has  been one of Porsche’s best kept secrets. The current thought is that it will feature a slightly downsized 3.4-liter flat-six engine but with an output similar to the 997 Carrera’s output of 345 horsepower..."

Porsche 991 Cabriolet and Coupe making the rounds...

Spy lenses have once again caught Porsche engineers out testing the next generation 911. Both cabriolet and coupe versions were seen out running on the Nürburgring. The 2012 Porsche 911 is expected to be slightly larger and boast a wider rear track. The boxer engine in the base model is rumored to produce 345 horsepower.

Current intelligence also has it that Porsche plans to unveil the car at the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show...

Those shots of the 991 at the 'Ring are getting boring, so here are some new ones. I think these are some of the best ones yet, as they not only show great detail, the true beauty of the car is shown.

Porsche may be considering testing cars around the Isle of Man TT course for a bit more excitement...

...Porsche are apparently keen to beat the new record set this week by a Subaru WRX STi driven by rally driver Mark Higgins at an average speed of 115.3mph around the 37 mile lap!

Doubt we'll see any before Frankfurt in Sept.

BTW will they switch the entire line over to 991, or will they still keep making any 997 variants?

They will switch over the Carrera models, and then phase in the rest of the cars as they come. When there is just the Carrera models, the RS 4.0, and all Turbo models will continue production for a short time. They will then be phased out and restart production as a 991 model around 1.5 years or so afterwards. I'm can't be 100% sure though.

New Autobild renderings of 991 and SLC: http://www.autobild.de/artikel/mercedes-slc-vorschau-1796862.html Mentions a completely different, old-style, Targa model.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

That Targa  would look very nice  ! But I wonder how they would deal with the roof panel ?   It could only work if the panel slides under the back window, but that seems not possible .

If they didn't make a Targa like that, I'd be surprised. The new Carrera Coupe models will now have an optional glass roof, effectively taking the place for a traditional Targa model.

Besides, the "safety cabriolet" style looks so much cooler, and makes much more sense. I bet if they brought back this style, sales of the Targa would dramatically increase.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I love the way the 911 looks from behind. I wonder if they will introduce the targa model at the same time as the rest of the models.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

This looks silly, who would buy that?

I don't believe this will go in production, other than maybe a limited edition at the end of the cycle like the Speedster.

    Im with you Tim.

Probably, some journalist heard that the targa style will resemble the early targa styles or so, and the photoshop artist came up with this.

However, I do not think that they will literally copy the old style roll bar, but will make a new design with reminiscence of the old style.

To be honest, the 996 and 997 targa models were nothing more than 911 with big sunroofs, so I wouldn't mind seeing a proper targa again.

Is it just me, or have we been anticipating the 991 for eons?

I'm actually very tired of the subject.  Wake me up when we get there someone...

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to seeing the new model, and the artist's renderings look great, but I feel like I've been watching a great movie in super-slowmo.   Its interesting for a while, but eventually... Smiley

Thank you guys! Just for future reference, my username is no mistake of "Carrera". It is based on the town of Carrara Italy, which produces the marble in which the colour "Carrara White" is named after. Smiley

I'm just interested in how the design would function if it made it into production. I assume they would find a way to make the top stow beneath the rear glass by making it a hatch?

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Carrara, the targa should look like that, it looks sporty    the design on the 997, 996 had no appeal at all, it did not suit a sports car

Porsche 991 GT3 rumoured to be mid-engined layout...

    rosenbergendo:

"Just got back from Daytona ... managed to corner one of the higher ups of Porsche motorsport and he was open with 991 info. He saw my car and I started asking him about the 991 GT3 cup and then going on to what he knew about the street car. What he told me is the following...

    1. 9A1 motor for sure with 480 hp for GT3
    2. PDK-S (he used this term twice) which has been tested with the 9A1 for over 4 years he claims
    3. Weight loss of 180-200 lbs through use of composites
    4. Aboslutely no hybrid tech.He said specifically it doesnt fit the GT3 motif
    5. Confirmed no more Gt1 (Mezger) block after GT3 RS LE (he confirmed 4.0 RSR motor)
    6. Stressed the move of the motor forward essentially making the car a mid-engine car, even though Porsche will never call it one. He says this will make the car more balanced..."

These rumours of the 991 GT3 specification and potential "mid-engined" layout reminded me of some earlier spy shots of a 991 GT3 mule...

...these spy shots were rumoured to show Porsche testing a road version of the GT3 R Hybrid...

...but maybe that's just what the GT3 test mule was intended to imitate?

If the 991 GT3 does include a more "mid-engined" layout, as rumoured, then the spy shots could be Porsche testing additional cooling for the 991 GT3 engine situated further forward than in earlier generations...

So maybe Andreas Preuninger and his team of elite Weissach motorsport engineers have decided that a "mid-engined" layout is the future of Porsche Motorsport?

The commentary from the Eurosport team at Le Mans dropped a strong hint that future Porsche racers at Le Mans would indeed be mid-engined...

...looking forward to Chris Harris video of Porsche's next Le Mans racer!

I know about the performance plus if the balance would be more mid-engined, but for the fun reason I prefer the rear balanced 911 like it is today. It is so much fun to drive it and it will never feel again like it if they move the engine to the front!

Just saw a 991 on the streets of Pasadena California.  Only one car and heavily camouflaged, but unmistakably a Porsche.  Reminds me when I saw three Cayennes about six months before they were announced on the streets of Venice California.
