    Key fob charges itself when in the ignition?

    Hey guys,

    Just got back from 2 weeks vacation over in the Caribbean. Obviously the first thing upon my return was to go check on my 911. However, to my dismay my key fob wouldn't open the car - I had to manually put the key in the lock to open it. Of course the alarm then went off as I got in, so I threw the key in the ignition and started her up. Perfect start. Ahhh, how I missed that sound

    Anyway, I then went for a 30 min spin to clear out any cob-webs. When I returned home I found that the key fob then worked perfectly fine again. My only conclusion is that the key is recharged when it is in the ignition.

    Can someone please confirm if this is indeed the case?

    This is normal. After a few days, you have to open your car with the key. I can' t remember the reason behind it, but you will find all the explanations in you car's manual.

    To avoid the alarm, I think, if I remember well, as soon as you open the car with the key, you close it again with the key fob... Great to discover new features about your car

    after 4 (or 5) it hibernates...it's in the manual indeed.
    to open the car, you have to insert the key, turn it as if to lock it. it reenables the key, then you an open with the remote.
    All of this based on a 986S however :-)

    Hey Alex, I guess your salesman didn't inform you about this at the time of delivery. Nope, the key is not recharging. This is from the owner's manual:

    "The remote-control standby function swithches off after 7 days

    If the vehicle is not started or unlocked with the remote control within 7 days, the remote control standby function is switched off(to prevent discharging of the vehicle battery).
    1. In this case, unlock the driver's door with the key at the door lock. Leave the door closed in order to prevent the alarm system from being triggered.
    2. Press button 1 on the remote control.

    The remote is now activated again."

    There you go..

    This is part of the normal power-savings feature of the car.

    Always found that just lifting open the drivers door handle a little (whilst still locked) and then trying the key fob, works - synchs the fob with the alarm again.

    Good find if that really works after the remote control was shut down
    The reason behind that could be that immobilizers usually save events like lifting the door handle whilst still locked. Such events might trigger wake up of the complete immobilizer system including the remote control - maybe just for a few seconds or minutes. The events can be read out during service. So, you can see how often someone has tried to open your car. Now, if you do that yourself on purpose that event counter would be useless. That might be the reason why PAG does not mention it in the manual.

    IIRC, there is an additional sentence in the German manual stating that you have about 20s time to press the button after unlocking manually before the alarm goes off. So, I unlock manually, open the door and while entering the car I press the button. Maybe that also generates an event for the immobilizer if you open the door after unlocking manually before pressing the button. I'll try to get info about stored immobilizer events the next time the car's in service.

    agree with this  - a pull on the door handle has been enough to wake mine up on the occasions it's gone to sleep..
