    Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

    SLC.jpg

“It is going to make the 911 seem old-fashioned,” said one source, describing not only its appearance but also its construction, which centres around a lightweight aluminium structure similar to that used by the SLS

Thats not really an insult considering one of the strong points of the 911's design is its heritage and historic significance, in a way its supposed to be "old-fashioned"

but otoh that render looks pretty darn good.

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

A coupe version of the next SL

I really like the looks of it. Now Mercedes just need to do something stupid and destroy the looks of the production car :(

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

OMG, I would save my pennies to buy that used someday

Looks stunning, but indeed... but the naming is odd. the C makes sense, and I guess the association with the SLS too, but they're so similar now. While MB cleaned up their 'average' coupes the CLK and CL to house them under the respective single letter chassis name, they seem to go nuts with other models in terms of naming. Does anyone see troubles in SLC and CLS  for example..

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

Love the artist's rendering of the anticipated car. Not loving the history of Mercedes' unwavering ability to make a car detached from the driving experience. Hope it's different this time.

SLC coincides with Mercedes tradition. In the 70s there were 2 versions of the then Mercedes sportscar.

The open SL and the coupe SLC below. There was also a Rallye SLC for competition.

Oh very true, totally forgot about the coupe versions of the R107! Makes sense then, still slightly confusing though ha.

I personally love the whole concept and design. Mercedes is really going more sporty

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

Love the initial design.. Are those door hinges on the roof?

    --

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

No, looks like regular doors. But the sketch shows two roof bulges. I imagine it'll just have regular doors.

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

I suspect in the artist's impression some styling features are exaggerated so as to look impressive. I expect the final SL to be a larger version of the new SLK and its coupe brother very similar

MB has soooo many models now it is hard to differentiate them.

Whatever happened to a modicum of exclusivity?

Some pictures of the forthcoming SL, the basis for the SLC.

Although still disguised you can see that the design underneath offers nothing that special

This story is kind of like with the BMW 6 series. We talk about it, we see some sketches and mule shots. Then the car comes out and we go "meh, it looks better than the previous one, more sporty and aggressive" and then we go back to talking about 911s.

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

The new BMW 6 series is one of the most boring cars on the market. I really like the 5 series but the 6 series should have been different.

True, BMW is shitting the bed when compared to Mercedes... they are putting out exiting sports cars

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

A 911 rival? MB has been making soft cruisers (with the option of a big AMG engine for tail-happy drifting) for so long that they have forgotten what a real sports car should be like.

There was an open white 6 cabrio the other day. It just needed a sail and it could be readily used as a nice boat. Smiley

BMW was the epitome of sporting elegance until Bangle arrived. This peculiar designer totally lost the way of the brand, and now the new designers cannot find their way out of Bangle's  labyrinth. Only the 3 series two door looks like a proper BMW. The 1 series two door also just passes the test.

Why can't they just bring back the 8 series?!

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

Well BMW is in it for a practical FWD 3er these days it seems

The 8 series was just as much a cruiser as the new 6er back then.... now it would be an uber-boat if they brought it back.   IMO BMW's problem is not its exterior design, more that it has lost its way in engineering and performance.  Far  too much engineering energy is being spent on features not related to driving precision or pleasure.   This started happening while Bangle was in charge of design - and the "excitement" of his designs for a while covered up the reality that most of the BMW cars were no longer clearly class leaders in driving, and the engineers or marketers who were the culprits for this decline were not as visible as Mr. Bangle.

Cruiser or not, that car looked very nice back then!

Well the new Pruis i8 is coming, but don't get your hope up... It'll only appeal to the Hollywood elite and a rare breed of wealthy hippies.

I recently saw a 850i and the car still looks cool nowdays....

It would be great to see a new 8 series in BMW`s line and not a "5 series" coupé...

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

Yes, the 5 series "coupe" look may actually keep a lot of potential customers from buying the new 6 series. Sad.

Totally agree, spot on, the previous modell was much more unique than this new 6 series.

I drove the 850iL and was hugely disappointed. It handles so shitty it is almost unbelievable. BMW really screwed it up, way too heavy and unsporty characteristics. A vague boat Smiley

A new 8er would make a lot of sense, but i fear BMW is going FWD shopping car...

Re: Mercedes SLC - 911 Rival

I think that Audi (with the R8) and Mercedes (with SLS) already show that BMW strategy is on the wrong way... or too slow (if they are thinking in the new M1)....

I have to say that Mercedes is starting to be more interesting then BMW.... their cars have more "feeling" then old models. I drove 3 weeks ago a 2011 6.2 liter E63 AMG and i love it... nothing to do with the old`s AMG`s... Even with the future C63 Black Series they prove that they are putting more attention on specific markets....

I think nowdays doesn`t make much sence making cars (in specific segments) that can please to everyone... Saying this i think in one of my favorites cars: The BMW M3....

BMW with 1M Coupé almost "kild" the M3 spirit... if the 1M coupé was to be un recreation of the e30 M3 then why they didn`t make the E92 M3 carrying this "badge"?....

    - 6 series is a "boat" on BMW line

    - E92 M3 was overpast by 1M coupé.... and maybe is overpast at all

    - (future??) M1 is very delayed and if he it the roads one day i hope he became a real M car....
