Fisrt of all this is just an Autocar article (i.e. not trustworthy).
Secondly, even this article says that there is a possibility that the M5 will also spawn a 4WD version and not that it won't be a RWD model to begin with, which it will be!

True but a 4WD version of the M5 would increase the potential customer base substantially.

IMO BMW, who are the masters of automobile marketing, wouldn't let this opportunity to secure more sales, pass by.
A 4WD M5 will not only appeal in areas with bad winters but also to people who would feel safer in 4WD (than a RWD) 560PS car. BMW have all the hardware now for such a car.

With the current HP figures of these cars from the sportysedan HP wars, a AWD M5 version is a good move by BMW when trying to appeal to the broadest target pop posible.
Even if many drivers may not drive the car to its potential for AWD to be much of a factor in controlability and driving ease at the limit for ordinary drivers, people like having the AWD there nevertheless specially when jumping behind the wheel of such a powerful car. And as long as they design it so that it doesn't detract to much from the driving dinamics BMW sedans are know for, I think AWD is a good idea for such a car IMO. Makes it safer in it reactions and more versatile, which is one of the must's of such a car. However they should still offer the RWD version though.
And I wouldn't discard either that the AWD option will trickle down to other 5-series models as well once its offered in the M5.
