Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

They made this Edition after a Martini sponsored 936 Spyder won Le Mans in 1976.

Of course, if Porsche could win Le Mans with the 918 Spyder, they might have been little excused by fans for bringing out this latest  special edition Turbo S

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

You certainly have a point there and one can argue if a 924 dressed in Martini colours to commemorate racing victories is a better idea than the above "918 Spyder edition". Nonetheless, Porsche also produced some very attractive cars for special occasions, combining solid reasons such as a product´s anniversary with interesting colours and options.

Some of these ideas though were, are and will be silly...

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

I still like the 40 Year Anniversary Special Edition 996 made in 2004. Powerkit, Sport Exhaust, LSD, PSM and tasteful and unique finishes inside and outside.

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

I have nothing especially against "special editions". I just want them to be "special" in a car of Porsche's caliber.

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

IMO there is nothing wrong per se in having special editions - it's just that the particular special edition needs to make sense so that it adds something and doesn't diminish the car.

I wonder how Ferrari 458 Italia owners would react to a 458 Italia 'Ferrari Enzo Edition' or Lamborghini Gallardo owners to a 'Reventon Edition'?

As long as the special edition doesn't cost more than the standard edition, I really don't get the problem. Seriously.

Look at the new GT3 RS "special edition"(this isn't actually a special edition but an improved GT3 RS): The price tag is over 200k EUR.

I actually prefer the special edition which costs the same as the standard car.

So what do you get with the "918 Spyder Edition" for the same price of the Turbo S?

Wait, you will get some leather options like the centre console and CF in the interior, which don't cost you that much if you had to order them. You get CF mirrors, which are nice, but look a bit out of place since the car is no MP4-12C. You also get CF air inlets in the rear fenders, which don't look really good at all cars in other colours than black or maybe white. And then you get some accents in absolutely hideous green, which look totally silly and no person with a rest of good taste would ever order them, if he had the choice. Smiley

Basically you could use a black marker and paint all those hideous green stitches black, you will have problems with the piping though. Smiley

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

haha, i was THIS close to buying a 924 Martini two years ago.. i fell in love with it.

Realistically i walked away because it has stripes and nice seats, and it had a 2k premium on it

Special editions are silly, but they are nice optioned clearing out models which does make them desirable over time...

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

Martini stickers are certainly not stupid nor silly

There is little, if any, parallel to the 918-special-edition-Turbo-sillyness.

Ferrari puts a F1 champion label on their cars (or at least did ). Porsche created a Martini Racing special edition for the same reason. Sadly, today they have to revert to Black Editions, Design Editions and other random-marketing-idea-editions which are far from their true heritage in racing. Rather milking the cow than celebrating the brand.

(Not that it is necessarily wrong, as long as they add shareholder value and deliver great products)

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

It has been confirmed, the 997 Turbo S "918 Special Edition" is only available to those who order a 918. It is an exclusive offer and Porsche apparently is very strict about it.

Meaning: Even if you want this "918 Special Edition", you can't have it. Unless you order a 918 Spyder.

Now it makes more sense, even if I still can't really find the "radioactive green" stuff attractive.

Re: 918 Spyder ready for order...New 997 Turbo S "Special Edition"

This is just a marketing thing for the 918... Never in dealers means so not available to most of us.

    Porsche 918 Spyder...

It's interesting that Porsche decided to launch the definitive Porsche 918 Spyder "road car" with a selection of "official design sketches"...

    Porsche-918-Spyder-road-car_01.jpg

    Porsche-918-Spyder-road-car_02.jpg

    Porsche-918-Spyder-road-car_03.jpg

"The 918 Spyder is closely modeled after the concept study seen at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. However, the production version of the two-seater ditches the full open-top treatment for a manual roof system with removable roof panels that can be stowed in the front luggage compartment. Other changes visible from the official sketches include the addition of exterior mirrors and the elimination of the side exhaust tail pipes..."

Compared to the original concept, it's not particularly surprising they have added wing mirrors and moved the side exhausts...

    1293982024686porsche-918spyder-front.jpg

    1293982037114porsche-918spyder-rear.jpg

However, it seems there are also some other changes above the engine bay and a few unanswered questions for any potential buyers...

    • Are they really proposing to fit the exhausts directly behind the head-rests?
    • What has happened to the original "air-ram" scoops above the engine?
    • What will be the size of the RS Spyder based V8 engine in the 918 Spyder?
    • What will be the power output of the V8 engine without the hybrid?
    • What will be the red-line of Porsche's V8 motorsport-derived engine?
    • Will the 918 Spyder sound anything like the RS Spyder?
    • When will we get to see the Porsche 918 Spyder lapping the Nurburgring?
    • And, most importantly, when will we get to see Chris Harris drive it around Weissach?

...look forward to hearing more as the development of the Porsche 918 Spyder continues!
