I should have been clearer... there are N0 and N1 RE050A on the market. There's a s substantial difference between the two. The N1 is superior.

Ah, I see what you mean, yes, they are the N1's. Did not know about the difference between the N0's and N1's either, glad they are the N1's then Smiley

Great! If you have a chance to compare your new RE050A N1 with someone's new PS2 would be interesting to evaluate the expansion joint crashing effect.

With the PSS you mean? will do if I canwink I'm also very interested in knowing the water evacuation capabilities of the PSS in highway driving compared to PS2/RE050, their thread design looks very sporty, like the Cups, but less standing water friendly.

    I meant new RE050A N1 vs new PS2.

Reports say that the PSS is better in wet/dry than the PS2 and quieter too.

    Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sport

I am mounting RE050 N1 this week. I could of baught the PSS but as they are not N rated, I did not want them.

I will go to the Nordschleife at the beggining of october for 5 days and will not put the Michelin Cups on, as I am worried about the 'cold' temperature, but will have  these Bridgestone. If it is cold and humid I will probably be happy with my choice, but if the weather is good I will certainly regret the Cups, specialy on the GP track .

Better grip in wet surface is one thing and I have read test thar indicate that, but resistance to aquaplanning and ability to evacuate stanting water is another and they don't usually comment on that on tests. This aspect is very important to me since as you know we get rain here in winter and its dangerous at high speeds.

    Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sport

Approached a Michelin engineer with these questions and according to his comments and my personal evaluation of the PSS the standing water capabilities should be on par with the PS2. Dry grip has increased and is pretty close to the Cup tire.

    Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sport

If its equal to the PS2 in that respect then its good enough kiss

Mike, I find that interesting regarding CGT tires. Are you preventing from buying tires that are designed and manufactured according to present day standards?Smiley

    Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sport

Looking at the treads on the PSS , they do not seem to have such a good deseign to evacuate lots of watter.

Most likely sometime after the 991 is released, and available sizes for other versions may also be limited initially as well.

    --

    Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sport

Yes, N rating will be offered with 991 and subsequently for the previous generations. Nonetheless they were very confident in recommending the regular PSS for the 997 as it was one of the development cars for the tire.

Regarding hydroplaning, the 911 is certainly one of the most critical cars in that respect due to the wide rear tires.here are some controversial comments around. SportAuto tested the tire and achieved a higher hydroplaning speed than on the competitors, some other tests rated it rather poorly but not worse than other highperformance competitors.

    4trac: Are your RE050A N0 or N1 rated?

The RE 050 tires are N1 marked. These were original on our 997.2, however had already 12000 km when we purchased the car, or about half tread depth.... Should still allow me to compare with the new PSS. BTW, like a few others, I have no gripes with the RE 050 tires in terms of performance as a road tire, but find them very loud specifically on chip-seal roads that have a rougher surface... owners living in places that use only full hot asphalt to build roads may not hear this noise.

That may be true, but I think with modern tire design and engineering, we are no longer able to guess how these new tires will behave just by looking at their tread... Hence the importance of testing.

BTW, I think you were wise to pass on the Cups at the Nur in Oct... If it is cold even the standard road tires will struggle for grip. Perhaps Michelin need to design you and P-J an Eifel Forest tire... Full grip even at 2 Celcius....

    Yes.

Carrera GT tires are 2003 engineering levels and developed specifically for the car.  Too bad the tire manufacturer only molds these tires every 4 or 5 years.  Not only are they frozen in time from a technology standpoint, they are also very old chronologically -- sitting in a warehouse, slowly turning into high-durometer low-friction wheel ornaments.

That's actually a beef I have with low-volume hyper-performance cars like the Carrera GT.  The extreme performance is highly dependent on tire grip.  If fresh tires become unavailable, the performance of the car asymptotes toward the very ordinary.  One would think that keeping a company's flagships in good repair would include a commitment to something so important to their performance -- like tires.

Maybe the tort bar is keeping Porsche from doing all it couldSmiley

Today, I changed my Michelin PS2 tires (F-245/35/19 R-265/35/19) which were pretty worn-out with Michelin Pilot SS tires (F-255/35/19 R-275/35/19). First thing I felt immediately was the softness of the PSS. They are more comfortable and more confidance inspiring. Also, more quiet kiss

Big cock up between Porsche and Michelin, the latter is the official supplier of tyres for the whole range and the Supersport was gonna be introduced with the 991, but Porsche decided last minute that the tyre was too sporty for the average client!!!Smiley

I have them on my GT.

They're a good compromise, not as good as the cup on trackdays but better all round especially for the road. The Cup tyres need high temperature to be sticky.

I'm probably gonna fit them to my 4.0 whose Cup tyres are cooked after only 600 km!

Interesting!  This would explain the delay in approving the tyres for N-rating.

Tyres for high performance cars are always a compromise between conflicting characteristics. Since "sportiness" will be expected of the tyre, "too sporty" can only be an euphemism for some of the tyre's other, more mundane, properties not being up to the standard required when fitted to a Porsche.
Since these could be such things as ride comfort, wet handling, noise, durability, etc., which are not exactly trivial, it would be understandable that  Porsche would want to get them right from the beginning.

That tells volumes about what PAG thinks of their prospective 991 customers... and why they 'tamed' the 911 driving dynamics and came up with the 991. Telling indeed! Smiley
