Porsche 997.1 GT3 without the rear wing

Drove into town (Zürich) and spotted a rivierablau 997.1 GT3 without the rear wing. It had the center exhaust and the GT3 front. It also had the GT3 lettering on the engine lid. I must say it looked absolutely amazing, a bit like a GTS on steroids SmileySmileySmiley

I don't think it was a fake GT3, but you can't be sure ofcourse.

Sorry now pics as I was running late for a meeting ..

Re: Porsche 997.1 GT3 without the rear wing

I would have thought that running a GT3 with the front spoiler only would create serious downforce imbalance at Autobahn speeds, and perhaps even cooling issues as the cooling ducts are presumably engineered with the wing  airflow in mind.  But understand why someone might want a "sleeper" GT3.

I couldn't agree more. It is however possible to give a regular 997 the GT3 look, including the exhaust in the middle, I saw such a mod at a tuning show but I can't remember who did it.

My dream was actually a GTS with GT3 engine, something Porsche apparently had planned but never did because of cost and the missing PDK option. It would have been the hell of a car and a very special model. Just imagine a GTS Cab with GT3 engine. I'm already drooling... Smiley

That would be the perfect car for me!  A sportier version of the CarreraS with sport chassis, sport exhaust, and all the sport options for the carrera, and all the sport options for the carrera, and a GT3 engine...  yet with rear seats, more stealth looks than a GT3, street intended PSM, carrera ride height clearing... and perfect for everyday street use still.

Why is the GT3 engine better than the standard 911 engine?

Re: Porsche 997.1 GT3 without the rear wing

Maybe they thought that the differences would be too small between the GTS and GT3 if they went that route. A cool garage would be a Black Edition daily driver, and a track focused GT3. Both in black. Because black is the best color :)

Re: Porsche 997.1 GT3 without the rear wing

I guess most customers wouldn´t know the benefit of a true Mezger engine in the GTS. I would´ve been a bold move if the Sport Classic and Speedster would´ve used the GT3 engine though and would give profound reasons for the price level.

Regarding visual modifications, one of the examples from Carrera to GT3 exterior:

I love that, but he should have added the Sport Classic Duck Tail Spoiler and that would be perfect!

Spottet the car again and it had rear seats... so it must be a fake GT3 then

putting a fake badge, wether is an M3 o a GT3 badge, is pathetic IMHO, no respect.

This is actually the most pathetic thing you can do as a Porsche driver. Especially as a Porsche driver.

    So far, I've seen a 997 Turbo GT, a 997 Carrera RS, a 996 RS Spyder (no kidding!), a 997 GT4 (again, no kidding!), a 997 GT3 Turbo and a Boxster turbo.

    Some people really... Smiley

It does not have to be fake. One can install rear seats in the GT3. There are quite a few owners who have done that on another forum.

    The plot thickens Smiley

    Bluelines,
Can you clarify a bit more about that? Especially wrt insurance and liability, etc?
My thoughts were that it is extremely difficult in this reqion of the world to get "type certificate" for a car with extra seats than what is specified on the papers of the car?

PS: Carlos, are you reading this? It seems to be possible mate! ;-)

I cannot comment on the insurance and liability. It is not my area of expertise (like I have any areas of expertise Smiley ...anyway). There is a 997.1 GT3 for sale at a dealer here in Switzerland with one (!) OEM rear seat mounted. I guess for using a child seat on top.

Apparently the 997.1 GT3 has got the rear seat belt mounts on the C-pillar and other mounts hidden under the panels and mats. The fitment of OEM rear seats should be a "relatively" straight forward job by any qualified Porsche mechanic. I read a post by someone who did it as a DIY job Smiley You need to order some OEM bits and bobs for the seatbelts and the seats themselves. Rumors have that it is not possible on the 997.2 GT3 since the mounts are missing or something else is different.

Obviously it will not work with the race shell seats, since one cannot even access the rear with these. So reclining shells or sport seats are a must.

Do a search for "GT3 rear seats installed" in your search engine of choice and you will find all the details.

@ Bluelines: yes, correct description regarding the rear seats Smiley Should not work with the 997.2 GT3 though.
