Aston Martin considering classic ‘straight six’ engines

Aston Martin considering classic ‘straight six’ engines

Aston Martin chief exec Dr Ulrich Bez gave hints that there may soon be a new generation of models that would go back to the classic 'straight six' engine configuration. This tidbit is of interest to enthusiasts due to the close relationship of all of Aston Martin’s current performance models under the skin. Dr Bez said that the current VH platform that underpins all its current models still has many years of life left in it. He explained that the company has yet to fully explore all the packaging options but that VH has delivered all that Aston requires for a range of highly individual models.

He added that no rival company has been able to create such a wide range of cars from a single modular base, He also said that the key to future developments is further evolution, and not revolution. When asked about engines, Dr Bez said that he is extremely interested in a return to a straight six configuration for future Aston Martin road cars.

He said that he has already notionally settled on an inline engine of 'around 2.5 litre capacity with direct injection and turbocharging. He noted that a straight six will fit, because the V12s can already be put in. Of course, this information leaves us wanting more but for now, we could only speculate.

My 1980s BMW has one of those, certainly not the future i thought

But hey, if they make it as bullet proof as my M20B25 then why not.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: Aston Martin considering classic ‘straight six’ engines

I don't have a problem with this at all. Straight sixes are naturally balanced engines, second only to V12s. They also make a wonderful noise. Honestly, I'm surprised more manufacturers haven't dumped V8s for Turbo or Supercharged six cylinder engines.

Re: Aston Martin considering classic ‘straight six’ engines

Packaging reason. Straight six is longer and taller than V8s. If you slant the 6 for a lower height, it will basically occupied the same width as a V8, yet it's still longer.

Is he crazy? It's like he's trying to put a good spin on what has become the stalest range of cars out there.

... VH has delivered all that Aston requires for a range of highly individual models. He added that no rival company has been able to create such a wide range of cars from a single modular base ...

Not so much a range. More like the same sausage cut to different lengths but in their defense the sausage is a mighty tasty one. :)

The "spin" seems to have some substance:

There is nothing better than a straight 6 BMW engine in regards of "running" culture and smoothness in engines of this class! So I think AM is going the right direction!

Are Porsche all that different with their sports car range? Smiley

Porsche is more akin to the same sausage all around - what combination of condiments would you like on it.
