SpyderIdol, the 458 has a 4.5l engine in its gt2 form, because that is the next engine/restrictor size

I am with RC on this, 911 is a great racecar/car, putting a v8 would be blasfoumus and not racing a 911 in the gt2 class, witch was one of its pioneers, would be really bad for the sport!

I think the gt1 engine is just too old, and that the gt3 incarnation of the new dfi engine will be more then up to the task for the seasons to come, and even if  it proves to be less then enough porsche will get larger restrictors!

Again: no one is suggesting that a V8 is put anywhere near a 911. What is being said is that porsche needs a platform with a V8 engine.

Re: Official Information Regarding New 911 (type 991) Introduction and More Thread Closed

Thanks RC. Hard to believe no 991s available in the fall at dealers. Porsche must be concerned that delaer inventory is still too high on 997s.

RC, I am one who doesn't see the need for a V8 in the 911.  I'll take a lighter, well balanced car with a Boxer 6 engine over pure HP.

Thanks very much for sharing your perceptions Smiley Would your views be different with a GT3/GT3 RS rather than a Ruf GT2?

Partly, they don't have the same torque/power issues, but do still have the inherent handling which makes the car a lot harder to control at the limit than the CSL/GTR.

It was a 996 GT2 based car, to answer the other question.

Finally there will be a V8 GT to supercede the 928 - let me see - can I predict racerx's reaction?

He will not be happy! Smiley

However, imagine the 600+hp Porsche V8 in a...2dr 4wd wagon coupe like the Ferrari FF! Smiley

I think Porsche and Ferrari have a "secret battle" to make the fastest car for the Dolomites in Winter. Smiley

Porsche needs to give the rich something more costly to select other than just a common Cayenne Turbo or a Carrera Turbo. The customers for it are there, they just need the right vehicle to feel good about buying.

How about a Panamera Turbo RS for the rich and famous?   Wouldn't take much more to upgrade the Cayenne Turbo S engine now at 550HP to 580 or 600.  Add PDK.2, some aerodynamic stuff and voila...

They will start taking orders in Sept after the launch.. I guess Porsche wants to clear our all the model year  '11 997s before the 991 arrives. Just hope we don't have to wait till June to see the 991 Cabs.

Just get a GTS, while you can, to keep you sweet for 10 or 11 months..

John,The thought has crossed my mine, but I still enjoy my 997 C2S Cab. So will probably hold out untill the 991 cabs are available mid year 2012.

As far as I know, the Cabs come 6 months later, meaning May/June 2012 in Germany/some parts of Europe and late summer (end of August or so) in the US.

Interesting side note: In Germany, Porsche offers something called "comfort lease" for the 997. Meaning: After 18 months, you can switch to any other Porsche you desire without any issues with the lease contract. Even the remaining 18 months part of the downpayment (if there is one) can be taken over to the new lease. This is a highly convenient offer but it is only valid for certain models. The GTS is part of this offer too now (it wasn't a month ago) and the Turbo S can be switched after 24 months instead of 18 months.

Currently, the Carrera GTS is the hell of an offer from Porsche. Unfortunately, I've read many different comments on other Porsche forums, people tend to believe that this is some sort of a rip-off or whatever. While they could be right when it comes to the Carrera Sport Classic or even Speedster, the Carrera GTS is a really good deal if you are in for a Porsche right now and don't want to wait another 10-12 months for the replacement. Same thing regarding the Black Edition models, these are pretty good (not quite as good as the GTS) offers too.

Resale value should also be better on the GTS models but don't expect wonders. The used GTS models will surely put a lot of pressure on the used Carrera and especially Carrera S models, making some pretty good deals possible if you're looking for a used 997 Carrera next year.

The 997 Carrera GTS Cabriolet looks very good in black but I would add PDK, Sport Chrono Plus, LSD (limited slip differential) and Sport Bucket Seats to it.

No 991's until 2012 because Porsche Fiscal Year Calendar no longer starts in August.  It is now January through December. Fact.

Is the full glass Targa style roof we've been seeing on all of the test mules lately going to be standard? Wouldn't that just add unnecessary weight?

+1... I have also worried that Porsche could essentially turn all 911s into Targas, whether we like them or not.   The full glass roof of my S5 is one of its worst features.  But I fully admit I am not a fan of sunroofs in general; however if I must have one keep it minimal and invisible.  Smiley

That would be something new and I am sure well appreciated by a bunch of customers.

As for the glass sunroof, it will surely not be a standard feature in europe, in the US you could not have the 997 Carrera without the sunroof, so maybe it will be different in your market again... I would actually think not, as the glasss sunroof is a BIG feature , many people will not want to have

    It doesn't.

Car manufacturers used to try to tie model changes to annual summer holidays so that they could re-jig their assembly lines when production was stopped for vacations anyway. That's why model year changes also frequently start from August.

Porsche has recently changed to a January-December fiscal year to get in line with VW and the general German tax year, but there is no reason why model changeovers also have to be geared the calendar year.
